Directions to use banish ghost spell???

Can someone tell me how use the spell to banish ghosts? I have obtained the spell, and go to cloud in the ghost village to meditate. When I choose to meditate I am prompted to use the spell that I have obtained from the altar. When I elect to use spell it does not seem to banish the ghosts. What am I missing? Bear with me I am trying to help my seven year old Son. By the way he is playing MN on a DS. Thanks Jack C's Dad.
