I do MMA, its Mixed Martial Arts. Like ya know UFC? I train in Kickboxing, and Kempo... Kempo's nice. Also Judo is extremely fun for a good clinch game, takedowns. Plus Wrestling, I just joined my school's wrestling team actually. Even though its not a Martial Arts it can help you, if you have big dreams in MMA like myself.

I'm a couple months away from my black belt test in Taekwon do, so you can probably tell that I enjoy that. I've also done some Aikido and Judo, and really enjoyed them. I plan on getting back into them eventually. I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for in a martial art (I'm not one of those types that considers some inferior to others), but you mentioned liking strikes and such. I know that Taekwon do has that, and I think Karate does as well. If you've ever played Metal Gear Solid 3 and really liked the moves that The Boss and Naked Snake do, and wanted to be able to do that sort of thing, I'd recommened Aikido and/or Judo.
Maybe the best thing would be to test out different types if you can and see what matches your style best. |

I've done martial arts for many years and have almost achieved a black belt in Taekwon-do, i am going for black next October.
Taekwon-do is exactly what you are looking for in a martial art. I also done Ju-jistu for a while, a year in fact, disliked it and quit, and joined Taekwon-do because i prefer the style. However compared to some others suggested Taekwon-do has the art form element, which means that its not always real life situation take downs etc, its also about learning the art.

What about systema?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systema http://www.yofavo.com/?p=1154 Forget all those "vanilla" structured martial arts, go for something that does everything without doing anything ![]() It almost doesn't look real or possible but you ask anyone who does it, including most elite military units, and they'll tell you. But where can you learn it and can you learn in without devoting years of your life to it?

I'm not trying to dis Systema, but it doesn't give me the impression of not looking "real or possible". The stuff they did in that video kind of remined me of the sort of stuff I did in Judo, though it's not the same. It looks like a perfectly fine martial art, but really, it doesn't look like it's extraordinary compared to other martial arts.

Since "striking, counter attacking" was specified, how about Muay Thai? I doubt you could find a more explosive fighting style...or maybe you could?

Hey Creature, think also about your body type. If you're tall and skinny (and fairly young,) consider Wushu & Tai Chi, which emphasize and make optimal use of reach and flexibility; If you're short with stubby arms & legs like me, consider one of the Okinawan-based karate styles like Shotokan or Goju-ryu, where the emphasis is on more direct, simple moves and on getting yourself in close to your opponent.
Here's some Goju - some applications of the Seiunchin kata by Morio Higaonna sensei, in what must be the late '70s - early '80s...
