Batman Arkham Asylum
Developed by Rocksteady Studios
Published by Eidos inc, and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment
Rated: M

BAJO
When it comes to Heroes, there arent many that are as calm, cool and collected as the caped crusader himself. Batman Arkham Asylum takes place on the island that houses gothams most notorious and dangerous criminals as Bats once again brings the Joker back to where he belongs in crazyjail.

JUNG
Yes...it was almost too easy. The joker always has a few tricks up his sleeve and of course it was a trap...and of course batman suspected as much but was unable to stop the Joker in time from taking over the whole facility, and directing everyone to kill batman as fast as possible.

BAJO
The story unfolds further but we wont spoil it for you its told with a lot of Batlove and a lot of effort has gone into this game to make batman fans happy. He comes across just right, moody, sneaky, smart and he also appears to have some next gen 5 O'clock shadow going on

JUNG
Yeah hes all gruff and stuff...as you go through the night he slowly gets more tattered as well. The character models stay very true to the comics and some of the animated series. And he just sounds like batman should, and this rings true for die hard fans too because its voiced by Kevin Conroy, who's been voicing Batman in games, movies and TV since the early 90s. As you go about the business of solving puzzles and apprehending villains, narrative is piped through the Asylums speaker system and this, along with tonnes of dialogue, excellent level design and pointers, ensure you always know where you're supposed to go and you're always being reminded of why you're going there.

BAJO
There's solid direction here Jung even though you revisit areas time and time again, it really is a linear path that you're going on but you don't notice because there's always a new gadget that opens up a new area, or the environment changes itself, such as when Poison Ivy takes over one of the buildings and plants and gas become new obstacles...its like a small sandbox without redundant mission travel.

JUNG
Even so Baj, I did get Sandbox claustrophobia once or twice

BAJO
Yeah I hear you Jung, all I wanted to do from the moment I got on the island was get off it and you never do...in fact its even got its own Batcave to ensure you have no need to be anywhere else. Thanks.

JUNG
That doesn't mean you're short of action however, the fighting system starts off very simple with one button to counter, one for attack and one for stun. Things get more interesting once you start unlocking more gadgets and abilities, and when you run into enemies that need to be stunned first or attacked from behind.

BAJO
As great as it looks and he does fight like Batman should you really don't enjoy hand to hand until about half way through the game and this is because its not a challenge until you start fighting large mobs with more weapons...and you'll even need to ride the back of the odd elite inmate to help even out the odds....Although, there really is nothing like waltzing up to a group of goons, kicking some butt and after a slow motion finishing move lets you know the last one is down...dust yourself off. The camera control is superb and the way it swoops out of these takedowns says I've dispatched with you all now lets look at what Ive done...yes that's good work now, lets keep going shall we!

JUNG
There are plenty of hero moments like that in the game and some are really subtle but the instant takedown rewards for successful combo chaining aren't worth the effort screwing up chains happens a lot and often when you reach that, you'll have no one near enough to spend the instant takedown reward on, so all too often it goes to waste.

BAJO
Yeah, the combat system places more emphasis on looking good then being good, but even still I never got sick of mashing face buttons.

JUNG
Along with the rough and tumble, you'll regularly be presented with stealth situations which change up each time. First there's just a few goons with melee weapons, then one or two might have a gun so you need to throw some batarangs to knock them out of their hands or simply swoop down and take out the hardest guy first. Later on you'll just have stacks of guys wandering around, all with machine guns, all talking to each other and looking for you.

BAJO
I loved how they start off all confident Jung, but as their numbers whittle down they get more stressed. The stealth is good and the most fun I think, and you feel like a true predator to the enemy, picking guys off one by one and separating each from the herd where you can, to make life easy. A few bullets and you're dead, so you definitely need to keep cool. You cant help but wonder how the enemy misses seeing you though sometimes Jung when batman hangs from a gargoyle...I mean hes right there! It wouldn't be like that in real life if batman was also real...which he is in my mind

JUNG
There's a reasonable selection of gadgets and environmental opportunities that help with stealth areas too, such as placing blasting gel against walls.

BAJO
It was good to see the game mix things up with psychedelic scarecrow missions where you need to avoid his gaze...and the odd creepy flashback moments mostly hit the mark and theyre very welcome at times, quite chilling...

JUNG
But Bajo what about all the slow walking...it's your pet hate of the moment right?

BAJO
Jung its batman he can do what he likes...because hes Batman.

JUNG
Well all right...climbing about is easy and grappling and gliding is just a joy in general. You spend a good amount of time getting from point A to point B and Baj, I never realised Batman spent so much time in vents though Baj?

BAJO
[silent stare]

JUNG
Did that bother you?

BAJO
Jung, hes Batman- if he wants to spend all his time in vents hes going to do it and you cant stop him...cause hes Batman.

JUNG
Well It is a joy for fans and for everyone else its not bad...You wont get to ride the batmobile or climb a Gotham skyscraper, but you will drool at the crisp visuals and bask in the universe which has been done justice here. 8.5/10 from me.

BAJO
it has got plenty style and so much polish -like how you never really fall to your doom, and how bats opens vents more quietly if enemies are about...and how the auto aim always knows what you're trying to grapple or attack. It takes a while to kick into gear, and become challenging so we recommend playing on hard right of the bat. Hehe..
the batman fanboy in me wants to give this a 9.. but the gamer in me is going to give it 8.5 it’s really good, but it wasn’t brilliant.

Some sites, yes I am looking at you IGN, say it is the best superhero game ever up to this date; do you think that is true?

I might be inclined to think so just because my heart tends to lean towards DC as opposed to Marvel (though I still have massive love for the characters over at the House of Ideas) and I welcome any time someone puts dirt in their eye.

An 8/10 from Edge is wonderful. Wasn't their score for MGS4 a 7/10?

Well, he wasn't very kind to MGS4. He said that it was simply "adequate".

ATTENTION TERMIX:

I have been hearing through the grapevine that the pc reviews will probably be hitting early next week. How do you want to handle the pc reviews when they start coming out? Do you want me to label it as a PC review or just list it like I have been the console reviews?
