Question What Playstation 2 games do you taffers play ?

I'm getting a PS2 for my two boys for Christmas....ok, maybe for me too.

What good games have you all played ? Nothing complicated for me, I'm not good at those games that you seemingly must be able to mash down six different buttons simultaneously and at lightning speed to do anything well. Some of the sports games like basketball seem to require a lot of button pushing combos.

Advice for a slow fingered old Thief ?

I have a great X-Box now, but I used to have a PS2 before and I remember that Dark Cloud was pretty cool - very much like Zelda Ocarina of Time for N64 if you liked that one. I also had Summoner for PS2 but it wasn't great, just good, only if you're really into role playing games. But there are TONS of PS2 games around now, so you might just visit some game websites and read a bunch of reviews to get a good feel for them

PS2? Never...

I've given up on consoles(except the really old stuff)

However, if I had one, I would play Rainbow 6, Need For Speed, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, GTA3, Half-Life.

My experience with Sony was the PS1... All the old games and peripherals are 100% compatible with the new one! You cant use old memory cards on PS2 games, and you cant use PS2 memory on PS1 games though... But you can plug in the PS1 card to the PS2 and save your PS1 games on it still.

I have been told, and I have read that 'newer' games released on the PS1 actually look and play better on the PS2. So don't pass by the old games when you go to the store! Happy hunting Clayman!

Well I don't have one (of course ) but my Son, David, does as his Fiance bought him one last year. Since he's into dirt bikes, etc. he likes the Motorcross type one(s) and the racing kind, as he plays it when his Daughter comes to visit at times (against one another). So something along those lines might be an idea? He says they're pretty good and would give you something to play with your kids as well. Ta and Good Hunting!

not entirely true, but most games work well from what I've heard.

anyway... Like any system, it depends on what you like to play. Right now, the PS2 is the king when it comes to rpgs. If you're into those, I've been hearing good things about kingdom hearts, final fantasy 10, and suikoden 3, but growlanser and goemon will be out at some point in time, and both will be spectacular (either of those coming out will be when I buy a ps2 myself...) For good ps1 stuff, pick up arc the lad collection or the lunar games if you can find them.

I can't recommend any first person shooter types, since I can't play them on consoles at all (how they expect you to control it with a gamepad is beyond me...)

I don't play sports games, but you can't go wrong with the sega sports line. sega can't market systems for anything, but they make great games.

well, essentially rpg's are my main thing with consoles. I have a much higher completion rate for them compared to computer rpgs.. (90ish% vs maybe 50ish%)

personally, I'd just get a gamecube, but that would be because Zelda is due out in february, and I must own all zelda games...

Well, it IS true, but you have to turn on that function EVERY TIME YOU PLAY! That stinks, but it can be worth it very much in some games, especially if they have any 3D in them, such as Tomb Raider. The PS2 smoothes out the pixely PS1 graphics quite well, and the effect is impressive (at least to me) in some games. But why bother with old PS1 games anyway if you get a PS2 - just get cooler new PS2 games

I got rid of my PS2 ages ago, just wasn’t impressed by it! For the kids I’m sure they’ll love it. But most of the games out on the PS2 are exactly the same as what was on the PS1, only with slightly better graphics. For me the best game I played on the PS2 was a game called “ICO” This was such a great game as it wasn’t your usually console type game where you shoot everything in sight. Checkout this review as it might not be to your taste, but for me, easily the best PS2 game I played!

http://www.gamespy.com/reviews/october01/ico/

I have an Xbox now, which is fantastic! I’ve just played the “Splinter Cell” demo and believe me this game is THE BEST STEALTH GAME EVER! Garrett has just been retired!! As this game is truly amazing! Real-time shadows, Unreal engine, extreme stealthy game play sound familiar? In fact I ghosted the demo right until the last man where I got busted If you want stealth in your game play this game is now the DADDY!

whoops - I read that too quick - for newer ps1 games, yes it probably will display better on a ps2. for older ps1 games, while they'll all PLAY, not all of them work better (many firsthand reports on that front).

Xbox still doesn't impress me with anything in their lineup. The only game that Id've considered getting the system for is Shenmue 2, but since I imported the UK version of that for the Dreamcast (since sega, once more, majorly screwed their fans over with promises) I won't be going anywhere near it.

unless some of the rumors that sega may bring out some of their Saturn stuff that I missed out on (panzer dragoon saga - no, PD orta doesn't count - or ALL chapters of shining force 3) I won't be getting one for a long while.

if you get down to brass tacks, that's true of ANY system - console OR computer. I haven't seen a truly revolutionary game in quite awhile, although I know people who'd argue the point for animal crossing for the GC...

/me h4X0rs an X-Box and runs Linux on it - a cheap computer... only use of consoles as far as I can see!

Bravus

PS1: with a side order of for Peter Smith's reaction to my l337 sp34k!

PS2: what, me biased?

PS3: actually, for exactly what clayman wants - something for the kids that's better than watching TV, and that the whole family can do together, a console wouldn't be bad.

PS4: We don't actually have a TV though, so that doesn't help... and my kids install their own games, and have Linux as their default operating system: they'd be bored with a console...

I don't see why your kids would necessarily be bored with a console just because they know their linux and how to install games (I STILL don't understand how best buy can snooker people into paying them to install software - could it GET any easier?)
unless maybe they HAVE to be able to tinker with the game code/build levels/etc.

I use linux myself (slackware at home, red hat for research), as do lots of friends, and none of us have issues with consoles.

it depends on your choice of game - a higher percentage of my console games are either rpgs or fighters, a higher percentage of my computer games are fps-types or rts-types. I'll put the carmageddon series under fps, since those are my only "racing" games. Why? each one is usually better in controls or quality (or both) on one or the other.

G'day Fafhrd

Yeah, sorry, I think that was just me being imprecise and possibly also boasting about their technical prowess!

The things about using *nix and being bored by consoles are pretty much completely unrelated! The point is that they enjoy the controls of computer games and the resolution and graphics, and current TVs are lower-rez than monitors. The kids have played some console games at other people's places and enjoyed them, but enjoyed games on the PC more.

The point is more that to get a console we'd first have to get a TV, 'cos we don't have one, and we're not really willing to do that. The other bit (and this is where their tinkering does become relevant) is that stuff on computers is much more tweakable, much less 'black box', than on consoles.

Anyway, I mis-spoke and was confusing, and you called me on it - thanx! It's really all just bias and taste judgements on my part!

One interesting thing about PC/Console that I never really experienced until now is from the design side - Just Dromeding makes me think "Oh yeah, some folks have old computers and barely run Thief and won't be able to play my mission if I do such and such..." ect. It happened with MindMaster - there was a timing issue that made it so it wouldn't work on some folks' computers. I found myself wishing it was on console (only for a second) so that everyone would just have the same specs and I could know for sure that if it works here on mine then it will work the SAME on everyone elses!

Even THAT gets tricky sometimes. Working Designs released arc the lad collection for ps1 earlier this year, and it was held up in a bug fix for about six months because Sony QA found a bug in one of the 4 games that only was activated on ONE revision of the psx console, and WD couldn't repeat the bug themselves.

on the whole though, it IS much, much easier to develop for consoles...

I dont' know if they exist yet, but you'll probably be able to get vga adapters for most systems, since the dreamcast had one. it does take advantage of the higher resolution, at least.
Its sort of sad, the main reason I HAVE a tv is to play games. I watch a whole whopping 3 shows a week (although I do play quite a few tapes/dvds...) I don't much care about what the graphics look like, as long as the game's fun... Unless they look like roadkill, then that may detract from the game (unless the game's ABOUT roadkill, of course...)

Rich,
Splinter Cell is coming to the PC too. Went first to the Xbox. I am looking for that one. Looks like something I have been waiting for. Supposed to be soon. The action in that thing judging by the demo videos look terrific.

Clancy has some good ideas.

Good advice from all, even if its a bit conflicting. Sorry I had not replied earlier, the ghosting debate in the Missions Forum has been dominating my brain cells. And to no avail, I don't like to lose a debate.

I find it amusing that RiCh got rid of his PS2 "ages ago" and the damn thing has only been out two years or so. Us older folk whose fingers/brains don't move so fast will probably be playing the PS2 until 2007(even if the kiddies aren't), and still not half-understand it, or played a tenth of the games. The only PS1 games I ever got really good at and played to death were Tekken 3 and the Crash Bandicoot series.

Thanks for all the advice. Two player sports games are tops on our collective Xmas lists, as are the game Sly Cooper(a raccoon thief!), and some of the fighting Tekken-types. Thanks again.

Sneak, yeah I’ve already been over to the official forums to see if the PC version will ship with the Unreal editor. The Xbox version will have more levels to download through Xbox live. So it stands a good chance that the PC version will have the level editor with it. I hope so, as I’d love to make some levels for this one! Thief’s finally got some serious competition Near the end of the month for the Xbox and I’m sure the PC version will be out shortly afterwards.

Clayman, well I guess the measurement of time all comes down to how that individual uses it? I sold my PS2 over a year ago now, and to me, that’s an age ago! How long have we been waiting for Thief 3? An eternity IMO!

yeah, I guess ages depends on the user. since I still have my intellivision and 2600 sitting around (and getting used periodically), ages for me is a loooong time.

Cool

Just thought I'd add a comment regarding Splinter Cell myself as I have seen some of the writeups about it lately and it does look very interesting to me too! I shall be looking forward to checking it out...and hopefully from a demo? I still have to get my new componets installed and want to do that first before any of these newer games get on my system (of course the demo needs to be PC controlled before I'll try it anyway).

Clayman..glad to see your interested in multiplayer PS2 games as you'll have fun with the kids for sure Ta and Good Hunting!

Need For Speed II (runs because its a EA game)

apparently, the ps2 version of the game is the bestest. having played it on a friend's console, i can attest its fun as hell, in a Cannonball kinda way.
