![]() Yeah the hip is a concern. I need to build up to my big runs. I didn't end up spending £146. I ended up spending more than that on the 405 ![]() ![]() I went out for my first run with that yesterday and the US military satellites managed to keep up with me ( ) and I did 10.3m/16.5k in 1h 12m which is sub 7 minute miles (just, I think).I'm pretty happy with that, if I can avoid injury and run more regularly I'm confident I can get better though. That's brilliant, 10 miles. I should probably start running more regularly, not very fit at the moment. The only proper exercise I do these days is swimming since I moved away from the hills in Wales. I sometimes need a faster way to travel (no car yet) so have been trying to get back into cycling since I had a bit of a crash last year, but road users can be very inconsiderate of cyclists, and it scares me off.

Really horrible. In other news, my hip has really been playing up but I managed to eke out a 10k last night in about 43 minutes.

You need to speak to a pro. You could try posting a question on Yahoo Answers. Once you log in (if you haven't got a Yahoo ID you can soon create one), you can pose or answer questions in various categories and you earn points. I earned 10 bonus points today as someone chose one of my answers as the best (but point scoring is not important for my street cred but you need to earn so many to be able to progress to higher "levels" which enables you to do more like have an avatar I think and to be able to rate other people's answers. It's a very active arena with literally thousands of questions pouring in but at least you can post in a sport-related area. You ideally require some of those aerodynamic running trainers that will greatly lessen the pressure on your feet - something that will support the ankle too. They may cost a bit but comfort is a must because you'll suffer in later life with maybe arthritus in your ankles or foot bones. My late father had this problem from years of stamping his feet on [military] parades.

Lo's right. If you like to run regularly it's worth the investment.
If you go to a running shop the staff will watch your stride and how your feet land on the floor as you go (called pronation). I think I over pronate which leads to trouble up your leg in the tendons and such. A good shoe can counteract that by offering good support. And if you have joint problems (I do as well) you can get ones with extra cushioning. I've got a nice pair of Sauconys at the moment but I'm currently suffering from a hip niggle. It's really stiff and hurts on impact when I run ![]() Quote:

I just hope he has pro sports stores that are clued-up about professional running shoe requirements, Keir.
The last thing anyone needs is some Saturday job schoolie on commission ![]() I personally think that a bit of Internet research would be a start. Once you know what is needed you can always try a particular trainer/sneaker out in the high street to see how well you fair. Then when you note the price tag, get home and get on eBay. Last week my Addidas running tights (leggings), gave up the ghost. I went on the treadmill at the cardiology department and noticed one of my white go-faster stipes was unstitched and the seam had once again become unstitched on the ankle! It pained me to throw them but I got on eBay and found the elite in Addidas running tights - a brand new pair size 10. I'm actually a size 8 but they should do the job. The RRP is around £35 but I paid just £14.99 plus £2 P&P. I shipped them to my Mum's and my brother has opened them and checked the contents - all professionally wrapped and brand spanking new! ![]() Sadly I put my back out yesterday so I won't be needing them for a while! I'm itching to get on my new rowing machine - which ironically is supposed to strengthen the lower spine but until my back is better I'll end up doing myself a mischief on that thing! EDIT: Good luck Sophia, I'll be thinking of you. Go girl!

Thanks guys! Will be sure to post a piccie. I read earlier tonight that the City 2 Surf is apparently the largest timed road race in the world, this year there will be over 70000 people participating!

Wow, that's a lot of folks!!
Let's hope Jordan isn't in it ![]() Oh hang on, you aren't a UK dweller and are subsequently blissfully unaware of that whole tabloid story Seriously though, a good pasta fix the night before should see you right, Sophia! Drink plenty of water and don't forget that walking is a handy alternative At the end of the day, the finish line is the finish line, whether you have ran, walked, swam or flown over it!You'll feel so accomplished at the end but don't do yourself a mischief in the process! We're gunning for you girl! ![]() Three cheers for our action girl!

I might as well weigh in (pun if you want one,) on Keir's query...
Consistency is a big problem (especially in a location that tends to be hot,) but I've been hovering around 2-milers since my first year in High School, generally 2-3 times a week when the weather cooperates. When it gets beyond something like the mid-80s I don't even try to run because I was born in the tundra and all of this warm stuff just freaks out my system. I'd do swimming for cardio conditioning but I suck at anything but the backstroke, so there's not much available but running. Summer in Los Angeles makes for easy excuses to opt out for high-rep beer curls, so it's a problem to stay in shape until about mid-October. The coldest temperature I ever ran in - or attempted to, to be truthful, and only once - was -20F when I was still living in North Dakota. I remember that experience vividly - I was doing just fine when I started out because the road ran along the woods surrounding our farm and I was sheltered from the wind, but as soon as I got beyond the woods to open plains and that blast hit me, the wind chill took me down to something like -50 and I just gasped, turned on my heel immediately and slinked back. But in winter I did my two-miler regularly at temps down to -10 even with wind chill beyond that. You just wear a few layers of clothes and some good ski gloves and you're good to go. 'Miss those days. Nowadays I generally do two miles in something like four days, five if there's a pub somewhere along the route.

I'm not a zealous runner, as I mentioned I tend to cycle. So I'm not all that fussed about exactly the right kind of shoes, but thanks anyway. I was just mentioning it in passing

Thanks for the nice wishes peeps! I've been home about two hours now, had a fantastic time, I highly recommend it to anyone! I ran the 14km in around 1hr 50min, I ran all except the hills so am very proud of myself. There were a number of people who dressed up in costume for the event (I just wore normal running gear), there were two older ladies wearing fake bums and g-strings over their running shorts LOL! Such a positive atmosphere. I feel great right now except for a stiff left hip and surprisingly my abs??? I have a sneaky suspicion that I'm going to be a little achy tomorrow.
Edit: Added piccies ![]() The "bum ladies" ![]() "Approaching the finish line"

Good for you, Sophia! Now that you mention it, those bums do look a little too shiny hehe. Look at all those people running near the sea. I hope everyone obeyed the speed limit. Looks like you had a great run.

Well done Sophia. You did yourself proud. 14km is a excellent achievement.
Well the Swine Flu has kept me from doing any excercise but thankfully i have now recovered (not 100% yet). So i need to get back to playing football 2-3 times a week. One 3-4 hour training session and my regular cycling.

That sucks that you contracted the Swine 'Flu
![]() I guess there's no avoiding it but at least you got it out of the way and the summer is still available so you can travel now without fear of germs! I had to cancel my Canada trip for now as Mum won't fly with the threat of getting sick. Sensible decision because it will cost us a lot of money and we don't want to be holed-up in some hotel for the duration! In many ways I want to contract it ASAP so I can get it out of the way and then continue with my travel plans ![]() Hope you weren't too ill with it, Capt.! I hope you are feeling much better now

LOL! Well I definitely warmed down - I walked 3/4 the length of Bondi Beach afterwards - but didn't have time to warm up, my train was 25 minutes late to Central Station and got to the race just in time for my group (the "blue" pack) to run - I literally got off the train from Central to Museum Station in time to run across Hyde Park and walk into the group as we started!
I felt great yesterday however, even went to my martial arts class last night, hip pain completely gone - I thinks its just a small niggling problem I get from time to time

Buy a rowing machine. It is the definitive of exercise machines when used correctly (and you buy a decent one) ![]() I had my "virgin voyage" yesterday and after ten minutes I could not physically go on. Tomorrow I am upping the odds and am going for twelve minutes. After that I am going to build up more strength but I already have good upper body strength in spite of being lean. It works the lower back, the upper and lower arms and the lower abdomen muscle group as well as calf muscles. I paid £130 odd for mine. It's got a computer system so you can monitor your vitals ![]() Just plant it near the TV and watch Rambo....or something - you'll get a mental determination to do it. Personally I went 20 extras by watching G.I. Jane
