Default Regenerating Health: The Poll

This is the poll where we tell, from what we currently know, how we feel about Deus Ex 3 including "Regenerating Health" instead of Deus Ex 1's localized damage.

EDIT: 3-13-2009

"DX3 takes place about 20 years from now and various militaries are currently experimenting with the beginning of new technology in terms of patching-up wounded soldiers on the battlefield of limiting how much pain they feel when wounded. How far will it advance in 20 years and what will be more realistic at that time? A suit having some kind of repairing ability or morphine injection, or running around looking for a medic or health kit in a bathroom? We already know Adam works for a very advanced firm so who knows what kind of tech they'll have access to.

The dev team wants players to focus on the gameplay challenges and on how they will tackle them. Going with the classic health pack system still forces players to retreat from confrontations and break the flow of the game to look for health packs when they run out of them. Instead of retreating to a previous location to grab/grind/harvest more med packs, the system keeps you in the action. The player is now forced to retreat in a tactical manner if he's in trouble, but he doesn't have to leave the whole area and start over because he was too low on health and stuck somewhere due to that fact. Its purpose is to increase the level of enjoyment of a player and remove all the down-time of back and forth induced by a "get medpack" philosophy. Overall, the team wants the player to stay in the events surrounding him and experience the tension indefinitely.

Additionally, the regen system works hand in hand with the cover system for creating and maintaining tension in the game experience. The cover system allows the player to take a few moments to rest and heal, but also to form a strategy before going back into action. This creates a trial and error system that doesn't require a frustrating reload (from death) which becomes beneficiary to the player. So instead of running out of medpacks from trying different strategies, the player can move back and take cover, regroup, and go at it again until he finds something that suits him.

Deus Ex 3 like its predecessors is about choice and consequences, and the health regen situation, of course, only occurs during combat. In Deus Ex 3, you can have multiple ways to complete an objective, so avoiding combat altogether is often an option to advancing in the game.
" -René

There you have it guys, the scoop on Regenerating Health. I'm sure that description is enough to start forming an opinion of how you feel about said Regeneration.

Hm... I understand what he means, it was somewhat annoying to have to look all over hell and back to find a single healthpack, but I'm not sure I'm all for auto-regeneration either... Still, the change isn't going to completely destroy my experience either way, so my vote goes to "Unfortunate, but acceptable."

Yup, its showing.
FYI, I did take a look at the 'edit' functions in your first attempt and there didn't appear to be the option to add a poll to the thread. Sorry.

Is there any way to make the poll results invisible until, say, a week after the poll started? I can fully forsee that if there's a big trend one way, some people might see that and vote against it just for the sake of it. If we can keep the results unseen for a week, we'd get a much more honest picture.

Yeah, it was strange that they didn't allow me to post the Poll after three minutes. It's also strange that you can't fill out your poll questions on the same page that you add the text to your thread. But whatever, it worked!

On Topic, I'm fairly certain that from what we know so far, the poll will mostly be Option 3-5.

I actually looked for that option but couldn't find one. I also decided to keep the anonymity of the people who polled, because there was an option for that.

Haha, you face the same problem DXeXodus, Rene and I faced many months ago. The short answer is, no. The long answer is, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

I took a look and there doesn't seem to be any way to tweak a poll at all. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong tools, so I'll keep investigating and if I can make it invisible, I will.

I just hope people will really consider the options before voting in an over-negative way. I went for the 'neutral' choice because we really don't know all the facts yet.

And on the other side, I hope people will actually consider the options fully before voting for a more positive choice than they really feel, just to balance out the negativity.

Looking at the results so far, people seem to be expressing how they feel. I have to say though, it's hard to vote on a concept I can't try myself, you know? Just to judge it from words without seeing how it's implemented, and balanced and whatnot...

Does it matter? People who vote often say what they have voted for.

Which is why I said "from what we currently know". I'm sure someone will open up a new Poll after more details are released.

That's true. Don't get me wrong, I'm not lambasting the thread or anything, I'm just saying, I can only comment about what I think it is... Which could be completely different from how it's implemented, right?

Wow, that was faster than I expected!

Although I could live with reg health (according to the Merriam-Webster definition: "a singular case of temporal game-development insanity, miraculously leaving the game largely unaffected") I sincerely hope that it's implemented for the right reasons. Otherwise regen is just one of our game-design worries.

Nonetheless, I voted against just to make a clear point.

I just hope that people won't use this poll as "the authority" on matters of regen. Bringing authority into an argument is generally detrimental to thorough, individual thinking. Saying stuff like "poll shows it sucks, take it out already!" is generally detrimental to... look, it's just lame ok?

Hopefully though, if it's something like 80% "Hate it" with over 200 votes, EM will take a hint, you know?

I don't vote the poll features two similar options and I didn't have the option that I want.

There are two "I like it" options, and three "I don't like it" options, which is going to fragment the "I don't like it" crowd moreso than the "I like it" crowd. Normally, this would make it more likely that a "I like it" option takes first place here, but in this case, I still doubt it. At the time of this post, the poll votes are reflecting the discussions about regenerating health. You have two groups, both of which dislike regenerating health, but one which is prepared to excuse it and "live with it".

I went with Two "I like it's", "two I dislike it's" and one "Meh".

But yeah, I could have certainly elaborated, but you can only idle around for 3 minutes before you cant post a poll anymore after the thread is posted.

Perhaps if Rene knows how to edit polls he could put in an "Other - Please explain" option.

That's a useless option. It doesn't contribute to the count. Just pick one that's closest to how you feel.

Even an other option would satisfy me, because I wanted perhaps to give some explanations about that

I preferred to made the poll myself because I want to count many views here there is approximatively 2 - 3 only
