The fact is that I'm replaying the game to beat it on all difficulites (for example), and doing all the side quests, and finding all the treasures, etc. just because that's how I play games. The trophy that I get for doing that is added satisfaction (and "proof"). I'm certainly not going to do that all again just to get a trophy that was recently patched, which is why I didn't play this game in the first place.

That is a real problem, and I'm not (yet?) hungry enough for platinum trophies to play a game I know I wont like just because it has one to get, but I acknowledge that those people are out there. The fact that playing a game like this demands alot of manhours, and there is a limit to my available gaming hours, means that I will only be able to play a handful of games that are released. So to make the cut into my decision pool, the game has got to have alot going for it, and one of the standards I use to evaluate it is trophy support. So often that means that if it doesn't have trophy support it's not going to make it to the decision pool. To put it more consicely: if I've got to decide between playing 5 relatively great looking games, 4 of which provide trophies, the chances of me choosing the one that doesn't are pretty slim. Developers should recognize that they're competing with each other for gamers' attention and limited time, and neglecting something even as silly sounding as trophy support could mean your game's financial demise, particularly when all of your competition is doing it (and most of your customers are clammoring for it).

I like these ideas, and think "leaderboards" and that kind of thing function well enough right now in that area, but there seems to be possibilites for so much more. Perhaps in the not too distant future, devlopers will allow some sort of mod support allowing players to make their own achievements/trophies for their friends to chase, which would likely expand the replayability of titles exponentially. But for the time being, the developers' decisions are all that we have.

Not quite as much as it used to, though. Games are shorter nowadays, which is unfortunate for those with time, convenient for the rest. I guess if trophies do it for you, then that's good, but it won't do it for me and I hope that devs don't put emphasis on trophies.

I don't think games like TR fit with the concept of trophies/leaderboards. I played Battlefield 2142 for a short time, and that has statistics tracking, and medals that are comparable to trophies. (Getting awards for various things, such as 5-kill streaks, 8-revives, etc. I forgot what I lot of them were). BF2142 is a FPS, and the concept of leaderboards/trophies works well there; ultimately someone is a better shooter than someone else, and their statistics are there to prove it. By the very nature of the gameplay, the players can be ranked.
For TR, everyone is an equal raider. You just complete the level. There're minor things, such as speed running, or pacificism that could add challenge to the game, but the game does not expect it of the player.

Isn't collecting trophies just the same thing as collecting treasures in the game. There's not really much point to collecting them all but some of us just want to get more out of the game by finding everything so it seems like more value for money.

I read somewhere that soon all PS3 games will HAVE to have trophies. Can't remember what the date was, I think it may have been April this year.

Indeed, the secrets serve no real importance in TRU as they don't unlock a great deal but some still love to have the feeling they have found them all. Trophies for TRU will be the same, it will add a new challenge for those who want it. I think it's nothing but a good thing that Eidos are now releasing a trophie patch soon, I'm thrilled & thank you Eidos for proving my doubts wrong!

Yeah I hope this patch fixes the bugs in this game too, I just started playing it and it's pretty good but the bugs are getting really annoying. I might hold off playing this game until the patch comes.

I dont see why Japan have them now and we don't,
to be honest, it is really common sense to put trophies into games now, even before it was mandatory from 1/1/09. Eidos's Ignorance of the fact that the game would sell better on Playstation as more TR fans are Playstation fans. Too bad the game isn't really up to scratch =(

TR:U already has sold better on the PS3 than the other consoles... (heard this a couple of weeks after release, not sure how much has changed, considering PS2 release, etc.).. and that was before there was any mention of Trophy support for the PS3, or patches, or a demo, or DLC. Why do Eidos need to push harder on the PS3 platform, again?

Well maybe a good old fashioned reason, a nice gesture for those who support you. Oh...I forgot Eidos only does nice things by customers when they're being paid for it! To be honest I'm amazed that they can be bothered to do a trophie patch at all, we only have the Japanese release to thank for it.

I hope we get the patch soon rather then turning into a BTA situation where we have to wait for months for any word or release. Then I hope Eidos finally gets devoured by Square-Enix, until then this patch will go some way to making TRU feel like a complete game.

Would be nice if the patch included some fixes for bugs and some new outfits like the Legend and Classic! We'll never know! I hope in comes out before the end of March!

Trophies, yay.

I've been waiting for so long. Now I just need to figure out how to get my PS3 connected to the internet. I need to do this with some other games before I buy them too. But I'll wait for the patch.

Trophies may not seem important to some gamers but it just brings a whole new level of replayablity when you have already done the game 100%. I enjoy the trophies greatly and I can't even brag about them. Its fun to see 100% for trophies or just to challange yourself father than the actual game gave you.

And yeah its like medals except that you don't need the game playing to see what you've achieved.

TROPHIES

because tbh if the majority fan base is on that console, why not push on the PS3.
Also funnily enough Xbox got their Acheivements for Tomb Raider Underworld, was it too much trouble to make trophies for playstation or are CD just dead lazy??
Tbh this game needed incentives like this, if the next game falls short and is just a terrible version of legend like underworld or Xbox gets an exclusive deal again, I will probly not buy another Tomb Raider Game again. Eidos has sold out, and the TR fans don't like it, Eidos should look at their priorities and sort it out.
