Post Tomb Raider 2 movie set problems

From the William Hickey column in The Sunday Express (27/10/02):

Rumblings of discontent reach me from the set of Tomb Raider 2 at Pinewood Studios.

Relations have turned frosty between star Angelina Jolie and director Jan de Bont because he is allegedly proving a hard taskmaster.

"He's pushing everybody hard, especially the crew, and Angelina feels sorry for them," reveals my man with the clapperboard. "The pair have a cold, professional relationship. There's no warmth or camaraderie between them."

The pressure is on for de Bont, who has not had a hit since 'Twister' and who must keep the Tomb Raider franchise alive after the first film disappointed.

There go my hopes for the Tomb Raider-movies to become as big a franchise as the James Bond-movies ...

Oh ye of little faith...just because they don't see eye to eye doesn't mean its all over already.

I don't think the TR films will last for 40 years, but I can guarantee you that Connery and some of his Bond directors never always saw eye to eye.

Cool

No one ever likes working with James Cameron, doesn't mean he doesn't turn out a decent film or two now and then....

Though to be honest, in this case I don't think a frosty relationship will improve the film. Say what you will about TR1 (I know I did) but you could at least see there was a lot of effort, hardwork and dare I say love, gone into it, you won't see that this time round.

Still, in the words of Mr Holmes, "it is a capital mistake to theorise before the facts", so let's all just wait and see shall we....??

I believe such explosive relationships between Star and Director often make for a great outcome; Blake Edwards and Peter Sellars spring to mind.

A very wise man once said ‘Impossible to see the future is’…… I guess unless you have a time machine, which sadly I do not so I’m gonna agree with him on this one.

A relationship such as this means it is kept purely professional therefore the work gets done and it gets done right, it often helps focus people on the work at hand and thus produces a better finished product and the professionalism is evident in the final result. (That’s what my boss used to say away when I was messing about and stopping other people from working ......he's dead now)

Another thought:
Geena Davis and Renny Harlin were happily married when they worked together as star and director on "Cutthroat Island".

So were Orson Welles and Rita Hayridge when they worked on 'Lady from Shanghi'

Red face Shanghai-ed!

Sean Penn and Madonna?
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin?

Maybe the conflict will bring about a better movie!

Lightbulb Director James Cameron

No one like to work with James Cameron? You got to be kidding! Good old Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoyed working with Cameron. It's one of the reasons why this superstar wanted to do T2 - Judgement Day and the upcoming T3 movie - Raise of the Machines. It would be nice if the next Tomb Raider movie has a well established director who know how to direct fantasy and action films. Even with a well known star like Angelina Jolie, the mood of the movie will reflect how the director will control it.
