![]() I just LOVE IT when I see a good film. Has anyone seen Sweeney Todd? If you haven’t, you should. You really should. I cannot get the songs out of my head. Not only has it got Johnny Depp, but also my most favouritistisisit actress ever - Helena Bonham Carter!! And whoa, isn’t Depp a good singer? Is'nt Helena...? Alan Rickman is TERRIBLE though. He said he paid a singer teacher £80 an hour; go get your money back mate!Jamie Campbell Bower...what a darling. I think I'm in love. His voice...oh my god, his voice. So beautiful, too. So beautiful. I've never seen him in anything else before now. I must find out more about him. I must marry him!! I've always loved Sweeney Todd, and I thought this was an awesome film. The ending had me in tears. Like I said, I cannot get the songs out of my head. I was singing Johanna in the shower this morning! :lol Who’s seen it?? ![]() ![]() <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Fantastic film seen it a few months ago, I love HBC she's a fine actress, although was very disappointed as her playing Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter film, she was brilliant as the character just in it very briefly

I saw it when it first came out and I was surprised at how good it was since Im not really a musical film fan. There was also a considerable amount of gore and that surprised me as well.
But I agree, the singing was superb and the storyline was strong. Great movie

I fell in love with a film version of the musical done WAY back in 1982. They played it a lot on TV around that time. I don't go in for musicals much either but the music is pretty good.
It had George Hearn as Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett. I have trouble picturing Depp as Sweeney Todd, George Hearn was pretty HUGE and frightful as you can see- ![]() But Helena Bonham Carter is definitely up to the task of reprising a Angela Lansbury role! I haven't seen the movie yet and I have reservations. I'm not a huge Tim Burton fan but I'll watch Sweeney Todd when it's convenient. Quote:
Are the images from my youth coming back to haunt me? I was hoping I'd never see or hear of Leif Garrett again but he seems to be reborn as Jamie Campbell Bower

I'll catch it on DVD, it looks promising. |

Sweeney Todd has an interesting and LONG history.
The story starts out as a "penny" serial called The String of Pearls, by Edward Lloyd (or James Malcolm Rymer or Thomas Peckett Prest) in 1846. It was rewritten and published again and in 1875 it was done as a stage production. The first film version, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, was in 1936 but I've never seen it. I'd be more interested in seeing this version than the Burton version. There was a ballet version in 1959, I bet that's weird! It was done several times on British and Canadian TV in the 70s. The musical starts out with a play by Christopher Bond in 73. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler turned that into a musical in 79 staring Len Cariou (who showed up on Murder She Wrote quite a bit) and Angela Lansbury (who WAS Murder She Wrote). The musical version had a LONG run on Broadway, on and off. A television version of this musical production, with Cariou being replaced but the infinitely scary George Hearn was done in 1982. Ben Kingsley and Joanna Lumley did a non-musical version on TV in 98, it's pretty good. Tim Burton teamed up Sondheim and Wheeler, using their writing and music. Basically, he did a "Tim Burton" version of the 82 musical. The only thing new, from what I've read, is the look and actors. I'm sure the plot deviates some. My brother saw the movie and is a big fan of the original musical version. He said the new movie did a good job and that Johnny Depp wasn't as scary as George Hearn and didn't have his HUGE booming voice but that he did a good job. Other than that he didn't elaborate. Has anyone here seen the original musical AND the new movie? I'd be interested in hearing details. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2cNy_uhzK2k Good comparison here- http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sJVyIkvA6jI (maybe I should be a media historian? )
