Thumbs down

I personally don't like chat facilities on message boards.

If like-minded buddies want to hook up in conversation then they can swap IM details and do it there.

I have been on forums before whereby you can't switch the chat facility off and frankly, it was a nuisance, trying to write a message on the boards whilst being bombarded with chat invitations.

It's intrusive, unnecessary and completely off-putting in my opinion.

Chat here comes and goes, we had a good one for a long time, I am unsure as to it's current state. It was one of the other mod's babies... Let's see if he'll reply.

Perhaps instead of having some annoyingly slow Javascript/Applet/Flash chat, would it be possible for Eidos to set up an IRC server?

I've got experience with IRC, not so much setting up a server (though I'm sure it's not hard), but with Eggdrop scripts for bots that can provide fun and games!

And from a business point of view, there could be a seperate channel for support related issues! Think of the possibilities!

(Besides, I've been meaning to test out the IRC functions of Opera for quite some time )

I kinda miss the ol' chat thingy, although not too many members used it. I read about other members checking and not finding anyone online, and I also checked and found nobody online when I was there. I liked it because it was a members only service provided by the forum. For example, this forum provides a members only PM service. You don't require an email account to send another member a PM. The chat thing was another members only service. You didn't require an MSN account or MSN Messenger to join in a members chat. I could see where chat invitations would be a nuisance, but there was no chat invitation facility, as far as I know, so it wasn't a problem. I'd like to see it running again.

i agree on chatrooms being a bit dicy.
I only go on chatroom with radio station i'm on, or MSN convo's i rather go in general chatrooms.

If the this site/ forum had a chatroom that was managed right, then there would be np but obviously takes up a lot of time

Chatrooms are ok so long as there are people in them I suppose.
There's also the danger though that things cannot be controlled in a chatroom, which can be dangerous considering the different age groups that are members of this site.

I do like the occasional chatroom, but I don't know if it'd be great to have one here or not. I kinda like the forums because you can catch up on chat rather than missing out.

Well said. That's why MSN closed down all the chatrooms on their Groups. It didn't effect my site as we never used it much, but I went to one MSN Grapevine chatroom once and that was a classic example of chatroom depravity, frankly.

It's fine is it is moderated and has censored words and so on but there is a danger that minors can be exposed to all manner of garbage!

I actually used to chat in an online chatroom with alarming regularity and I made some genuine and lasting friendships as a result. But it was hard work! In one of the sub-rooms, there could be in excess of 100 people and you had to be VERY quick to both type and read without missing something! But that was before I discovered forums. Since then, I find that, aside from the odd one to one on IM, I prefer the steady pace of a message board

The chat that used to be here was actually okay and good fun
You could only go there if you were a member of this forum.

In the end though no one really went as many just stopped going there and here as well.

Oh, I see. I guess with people living in different parts of the world, it's very difficult to be on at the same time. I remember a similar chatroom a good few years back that belonged to Joeyloveslara and for a while people went there and there were some good conversations, however, over time, it became quiet and empty. I can't even remember where that chatroom was now.

I guess forum chatrooms are the safest bet as you have a fair chance of knowing the chatters. But random chatrooms can be quite vicious. They seem to attract a great many oddities - people with *cough* 'Problems'. They go on them to cowardly insult and terrorise others from the relative obscurity of the computer screen.

Some chatrooms are very poorly constructed and chatters can't stop PMs. You'll be typing in the main chatroom and look up to find you are inadvertently typing in someone's PM box that has popped up when they have disturbed you.

I find them a little impersonal. Too many perves hounding women for talk of a sordid nature

Oh yes there's tons Lo this is the only forum I use at present, well this and one called weeklygripe, which as you guessed is to get certain things off your chest (Pardon the pun) it's good if you want to vent your angeer about politics anything really But I use this forum as I like the sense of community and how everyone looks out for each other as well

I also belong to a rather fierce, no-nonsense political site. People might actually be shocked to read some of my vile ramblings on certain issues

However, if you go in with the softly, softly approach you get chewed up and spat out. You have to draw a deep breath before you enter the arena!

It's so bad you daren't even risk saying 'Happy Easter' lest you deeply offend someone's religious beliefs. But I went ahead and said it anyway because I am a bit of a $*it stirrer on that gaff

Consider it done my friend. I'll let you know my username too. I only rejoined recently (for the third time ) I took umbrage over cross-site bullying of an ex-member. The managers seem to turn a blind eye to that sort of thing and I had to vote with my feet.

However, I decided it was too much of a suffrance not being able to have the odd verbal punch-up so I told them to re-open the door as I was starting to freeze out here

Fine example just there, some guy with a picture of his pecs just messaged me on a "dating" site I use, pretty disgusting message actually will not repeat, so I messaged him one back "You're so vain, you probably think this site is about you, your so vain, you probably think this message is about you don't you don't you"

Have yet to get a reply, he probably thinks I am deranged now

Who says sarcaasm is the lowest form of wit, it's a wonderful thing

I think it'll be difficult for Moderators to monitor because maybe at least one Mod has to be there a lot of the times. Sure, they could try and coordinate a schedule with each other but that'll still be difficult or inconceivable.

I don't know. I was not here if and when the chat box existed prior to myself joining, but just plain text messageboard will be easier for them to maintain.

Wait, so CatSuit said they had one a long time ago.
But as with everyone, they all have other obligations which takes priority so I would vote no. Um.. If there was a vote.
