Game Will Not Load First Level

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and I cannot get the game to load the first map. I had the looping video problem but fixed that. When I go to "start new game" it has a screen that says "loading" but it won't bring up the level. It stays there for a minute or so, and then crashes to the desktop. The posts I have read didn't seem to address this problem exactly. Any help would be much appreciated.
