Default interactive cut scene problems in PS2 version

Hi, all. I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I just spent a while searching old threads and so far have only found solutions to the similar problems in the PC version.

Many players have written to me asking for tips on getting through the interactive cut scenes preceding and following the T. rex fight. I don't have the PlayStation game, so I'm not sure how to help them.

From what I've heard, they see the circle icon with a line through it in one corner of screen and then are unable to press the correct control to get to the next part of the cut scene. Or they can get past the first screen by pausing the game or holding down the X button, which apparently makes the Circle icon appear so they can press that button. But after that, they're unable to press any controls to get through the rest of the cut scene.

One player also suggested that the difficulty level setting affects what controls are needed in these sections. Is that true?

Can anyone PLEASE tell me EXACTLY what you're supposed to do in the two interactive cut scenes in the T. rex section on the PS2? And if you have any idea what could be going wrong here for some people, I would be grateful for your help.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Stella,

I haven't actually played yet but I am quite sure someone will be along soon and will be able to shed some light on your query in order that you can update your site - a site that as always, I shall no doubt be depending on heavily when finally I get my hands on a copy

I just thought I would take this opportunity to pass comment and thank you for making your walkthroughs and tips etc so very comprehensive and easy to follow. They are very thorough. I'd also like to thank you for the inclusion of my name (Louise), in the tips on defeating Takamoto in Legend.

Best of luck in your quest to find an answer!

No it isn't true. I played Anniversary (on the PS2) on hard first, then worked my through medium and then easy. There's absolutely no difference to the Quick Time Events at any point in the game - you still use the same button combinations.

I've heard of people having problems with the QTE sequences before and after the T-Rex fight, but not on the PS2. This is new to me.

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know.

Maybe the people who are having trouble are just doing the wrong things, but unfortunately I can't help them since I don't know what the right things are. Would you (or anyone else) care to take a few minutes to describe exactly what appears on screen when and what you are supposed to do at each point? I would be grateful.

In the PC game, as the interactive sequences unfold, you see an icon on screen (usually one of the direction keys) and then you're supposed to quickly press that key. If you press the right one at the right time, Lara lives and the sequence continues. If you press the wrong key she dies. That is, unless you have the bug where no icons appear, in which case you have to use the fixes suggested elsewhere on this forum.

On the PS2, I came across the circle icon with the line through it several times. All it meant was that I ran out of time to push the correct button.

And, unlike in Legend, if you press the button BEFORE it appears, you'll get crossed out as well. Probably when the player turned on the PS2, the analogue stick was not in it's original position and keeps pushing into any direction on its own, thus failing the cutscene before given a chance.

I know that to reset the original analogue positions in the GameCube, you have to let everything as they should be and hold X+Y+Start for three seconds. Don't know how it is on the PS2.

Okay stellalune, this is what happens immediately after killing the 6 Raptors...

- A herd of Raptors round the corner and charge towards Lara.

- A Raptor flies through the air and hits the wall. The T-Rex emerges from around the corner behind the herd. It grabs another Raptor from its back with its teeth and throws that one as well, the Raptor hitting a stone structure and making it collapse.

- The T-Rex turns and roars. Lara turns and starts running away from the herd of Raptors and the T-Rex as it gives chase.

- The T-Rex quickly gains ground on Lara. It lowers its head behind her and side-swipes another Raptor from the herd. The T-Rex lunges towards Lara...

First Button Press Here

The action slows as the T-Rex lunges, an icon showing the PS2's CIRCLE BUTTON appears to the top-left of Lara's head. You have a good 3 to 4 seconds to press the button or Lara will be eaten by the T-Rex. If you're successful however...

- As the T-Rex lunges, Lara dives out of the way. Landing on her feet, she quickly spots a Raptor heading straight for her. She lowers her guns and aims...

Second Button Press Here

The action slows as Lara aims at the charging Raptor, an icon showing the PS2's R1 BUTTON appears to the top-right of Lara's head. Again, you have a good 3 seconds to press the button or the Raptor will leap on top of Lara and rip her throat out (nice). But if you get it right...

- Lara leaps backwards, firing off three rounds and knocking the Raptor down. It's body slides towards Lara as she lands...

Third Button Press Here

The action slows as Lara squats in front of the sliding Raptor, an icon showing the PS2's X BUTTON appears to the right of Lara's head (above the Raptor's sliding body). You have about 2 to 3 seconds to press the button or Lara will be pinned beneath the Raptor for the T-Rex to carefully snip her head off. If you do it...

- Lara somersaults over the Raptor's body and lands squarely on her feet. She stands up and reloads her pistols and, as she turns, the T-Rex is right next to her and ready for the fight...

And that's the first bit. This is what happens immediately after the T-Rex has been beaten...

- With pistols drawn, Lara stands and aims as the T-Rex turns. It pauses and roars before charging at Lara, but she stands her ground...

First Button Press Here

The action slows as the T-Rex wide-open mouth lunges towards Lara, an icon showing the PS2's CIRCLE BUTTON appears to the left of Lara's body. You have about 2 to 3 seconds to press the button or Lara will be thrown high into the air by the T-Rex and then swallowed whole. If you're successful however...

- Lara rolls quickly out the way, the T-Rex turns its head and looks at her as it runs past...

Second Button Press Here

The action slows as the Lara aims her pistols towards the T-Rex head, an icon showing the PS2's R1 BUTTON appears to the top-left of Lara's head. You have about 2 seconds to press the button or the T-Rex turns and grabs Lara, then throws her violently against the temple wall. If you get that right...

- Lara fires off a single shot and it gets the T-Rex in the eye. The T-Rex stumbles and ploughs into the temple entrance, collapsing to the floor beneath falling pillars and debris.

And that's it. Also, I find you've got to WAIT UNTIL THE ICON APPEARS on-screen before you can press the corresponding button. The sound slowing down and the heartbeat can start up to 2 seconds BEFORE the icon appears, and if you press ANY button during that period (let alone the right one) it'll constitute a fail and Lara will die.

Anyway, hope that's what you were after stellalune. Sorry the grabs were a bit low-grade, but that's playing a PS2 through a capture card for you.

yep! (great job)
one little note: the PS2 allows you to configure upto 4 different control sets which can change the meaning of the various buttons.
the buttons spong described are the "default" set, which probably everyone uses anyway.
to be "universal":
(circle button) => crouch/roll command
(R1 button) => fire weapon
(X button) => jump

a ringing bell ("ding") confirms the correct command.
these actions are "natural" responses to the scenario that is playing out
and i would be surprised if these actions were different on the PC (or any platform) ...

and just to repeat ... the game is looking for "calmness" on your part and so samples the input even before prompting you with the buttons. you have a fair amount of time (~2 seconds) to respond to the prompt and if you aren't too fascinated by the action you can easily satisfy the prompt. any input (intentional or unintentional) other than the prompt will cause the sequence to fail, indicated by a (universal) circle/slashed icon.

You guys are so great! Thank you so much! I will include all this (or at least the basics with a link to this thread) in the walkthrough with credits and kudos to you.

Spong, I can't thank you enough for including the screenshots and everything. That's so helpful! On a completely separate note, what's a capture card? Those screenshots are the best PS2 screens I've seen in a long time.

The best PS2 screens you've seen in a long time!? You're kidding right? Those pics I posted are awful. And to top it off, they weren't taken from source - I grabbed them from an avi I'd made. As for the capture device, I couldn't tell you the name because the capturing was done on a friend's PC and I didn't pay attention when he told me. Sorry. All I know is that it was a USB capture device that cost £60, and the software used was Pinnacle Dazzle DVD Recorder (I'd have used Adobe Premier if it was on my PC).

Anyway, glad to be of some help .

Well, besides in magazines and professionally done web sites, where the people making them obviously have resources at their disposal. Generally I get webcam shots taken of people's TVs from across the room. In any case, I do appreciate the effort. Thanks again.

I second that Stellalune. I had a look too, because of the link in your initial post. Nice site. Is that what you wanted the info for?

Thanks, guys (girls?). Yes, that's the site. I've been doing waltkhroughs for the series since TR2 came out in 1997. In most cases what works for the PC works for the PlayStation (with different controls of course), but occasionally I need help from console players, and this interactive cut scene business is one of those times.
