Default The CV vs CV Stalemate

Ok, this probably only happens once in a blue moon, but it illustrates the need for a scuttle, or surrender option, or even a way for CVs to damage one another point blank.

So I just got back from a game of 2 v 2 on Battle of the Philippines. My teamate was new to online mode, and his sub and all but one destroyer were destroyed. Meanwhile I sank the enemy sub with a depth charge, while distracting it with my only DD. I then sent my DD back to protect my CVs. I sent dive bombers to take out 2 approaching enemy DDs. My DD closed in to their 2, and I opened fire. I was being outgunned, but was able to close in to the nearest DD and I launched about 8 torpedos just before I sank. Being so close, they all hit, and the DD sunk to the bottom.

There was one more slightly damaged DD bearing down on my CVs and some fighter cover escorting it. But my dive bombers were able to take it out just in time. I then sent several waves of bombers to take out the 2 remaining destroyers which were damaged.

Now it was just my 2 CVs vs their CV and airfield. They had parked the CV on the coast behind the airfield, which they used to protect the airfield pretty well. I ended up using all my dive bombers taking out the airfield. Now it was my 2 CVs vs their 1. I sent 3 squadrons of torpedo bombers with 3 squadrons of fighters repeatedly until I was out of them.

It turned out we were both pretty good with the AA. With one of my carriers at 80% health, and the other 2 at ~50% we were stuck. What to do but line up our carriers broadside and let them fire away. Only problem is, the guns don't do any damage, sure, they can take out other guns, but thats it. So there we were, 3 carriers, and no planes, sitting in the ocean . The only option was to quit. (somehow i got the messaged I was booted by the host)

It was a great game, and unfortunately I never got to see my score :-/

Anyway, it would be nice to see a scuttle option (if only for CVs) or surrender option. But I think it would be more fun to have guns on the side that are capable of inflicting damage on CVs. It would have made for a great ending to a great battle. But now all you can do is quit out. You play an hour plus game... to quit

They just need to fix the guns on the CVs; the 5" guns on Lexington and Yorktown classes were dual purpose, just like the Fletcher and Atlanta's guns

Similarly, the Japanese CVs had sufficent DP weapons for self defense purposes.

I think that if the 5 inch guns on the carriers were turned into artillery as well, they would be unstoppable against airfields, just send up as many fighters as you can to defend your carriers, get in close and open up on the airfield with your 5 inch guns.

LOL I can just see the mental image of 3 CV's AA-ing each other to death and getting nowhere.

Carriers w/5-inch guns pwning the battlefield is also a funny thought.

Why not just put in a ram option? Let ships take damage from hitting each other/running aground.

What the heck, why not just put 16 inch guns and torpedoes on carriers and make them a pwning machine.

The AA should do some damage do a CV though

Just send the carrier off the map, it'll be destroyed.

I've had this happen to me 3 times - I don't think enabling the 5" guns on the CV's would be an issue - whats the difference between letting any enemy ship within arty range of your airfield and letting a carrier get into range? it wouldn't really create any kind of imbalance IMO, and it would solve the stalemate issues.

I agree - a ramming option would be awesome

Just actually ram them, I'm fairly sure it does damage. Rofl @ the thought of two carriers ramming head-to-head...

Me and m8s reached this stalemate last night, was after a long (and enjoyable) battle, but we ended up with carriers quite far from each other, but also a fair way from edge of map. Even if we drove carriers off the map it woulda taken 10-15 mins just to get there. BORING! give us a ceasefire/truce/no win no loss option please!
