I liked how the characters in the Matrix showed some weight when they landed, sometimes even damaging the floor upon impact; I could hardly watch Crouching Tiger because I hated how everyone just landed so lightly. If people can launch themselves into the air like that, they would land with roughly the same force they had when they left the ground.
Besides, Warren Spector described JC's augs as giving him superpower-ish abilities, and superheros tend to crack the pavement when they land from huge leaps (I read plenty of comics, so I consider myself a bit of an expert on this ).
Now to continue the debate :
In response to the part of the post where I said "If people can launch themselves into the air like that, they would land with roughly the same force they had when they left the ground," ICEBreaker posted the following:

quote:

There are two points you are ignoring. The first is that a component of the force can be used in the horizontal vector. The second point is that one can land lightly by absorbing some of the energy themselves and finally releasing it back to the ground over a longer period of time. This is the same idea behind the speed and silent run augmentations.

As far as the component of the force that goes into the horizontal vector, it is a largely irrelevant factor. The vertical compenent is the only part I was referring to. Jumping that high would require a strong vertical component to the force and, since there would be no further acceleration once the person is in the air, gravity would ensure that the vertical component of the force upon landing is roughly equivalent to the vertical component of the launching force.
Anyway, this stupid argument I've started is just an example of what taking a couple physics classes has done to me, lol.

TechImmortal
Member
Posts: 852
From:Cabal of Technophiles mod group
Registered: Aug 2001

posted 06-12-2002 04:54 AM
I'll get around to a longer post in here, later, but now that I've gotten the action/martial arts topic over here, I'd like to point out that I *don't* want "Wire Fu" (and yes, I do like Jackie Chan ), I just wanted people to consider the possiblity of a hand-to-hand or swordfight, martial arts style, in Hong Kong.
As posted by someone else already, "wire fu" is a way of representing a certain fantasy which very much does *not* have to do with physics. It has to do with the concept that a Master can reduce the density of his body, thus bounding around sort of like someone would do on the moon. I am not making this up or guessing, by the way -- that *is* what that's supposed to represent. I used to study this stuff, plus it's in an Ang Lee interview I saw.
Consequently, "wire fu" is highly inappropriate for Deus Ex and should not be used.
When I mentioned Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I was using it as an example of cinematography, editing, speed, and choreography. Feel free to substitute the martial arts movie of your choice. But I do agree - no wires.

ICEBreaker
Member
Posts: 3088
From:Sydney, Australia
Registered: Nov 2001

posted 06-12-2002 05:05 AM

quote:
Originally posted by FierceClaw:
... vertical component of the force upon landing is roughly equivalent to the vertical component of the launching force.

Absolutely. So it would be the same as if the person jumped down from the maximum height reached. But they didn't jump too high did they? I think it was only around 10 feet? The film was unrealistic as you said. I don't remember the actual sequences but I am sure most of them defied physics. Matrix did the same thing, but the other way round. They made people land with much more force then possible. I'm also worried that they will take up some of that time with events that weren't even in the game. Maybe if they put in only the events of the main plot and leave out the numerous subplots (except maybe the Smuggler since he's so popular ), they might be able to do it.
