Yes, yet another crash thread
So, when I first got Invisible War, I didn't play it for very long cause I got bored with it, and decided to uninstall it. About a year later (now) I reinstalled the game, intending to give it another roll. I patched it up to 1.2, and ran the game. Everything was black, but I heard sounds. When it got to the loading screen, it wasn't black anymore, but the game crashed after a few seconds. I decided to update all my drivers (Video card, sound card, DirectX) and then gave it another try. Now the screen wasn't black anymore, but the crash was still there. I tried restarting my computer. No change. Reinstalled the game. No change. Changed the windows resolution. No change. Ran in compability mode. No change. Searched for viruses, spyware and adware. No change. Nothing works... I don't think my system specs are needed, but eh, I'll give em to ya anyway. ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 22 July 2006, 17:18:42 Machine name: None of your business Operating System: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2, Build 3790) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: K8UVM System Model: K8Upgrade-VM800 BIOS: Default System BIOS Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+, ~2.0GHz Memory: 512MB RAM Page File: 546MB used, 694MB available Primary File System: Doesn't say DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) DX Setup Parameters: Doesn't say DxDiag Version: 5.03.3790.1830 32-bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. I have the same problem - the game crashes out on the load screen. I have contacted Eidos technical support twice regarding this issue and received confirmation numbers, but have never been contacted by a technician regarding the solution.
In other words, either Eidos doesn't have any idea how to solve this, or their customer support just blows. Possibly both. |

I think I might also be having the same problem. But i see all the logos and hear the sounds fine. It is when i encounter the first loading screen with the blue building that my game crashes to the desktop.

I'm guessing it's a video driver problem. Sometimes the latest and greatest will cause some games to crash, so you may want to try rolling back to earlier drivers.

What INTEL GRAPHICS MEDIA ACCELERATOR 900 do i roll back to, i think it is a processor problem.
![]() It might be the PATCH that is causing the CRASH. Last edited by primer; 12-30-2006 at 04:02 PM. |

I got the same problem as the first guy. Everything was black. The intro movies weren't playing. I could get a couple of the first menus by pressing the ESC key, but the game was crashing on the loading screen.
Here is what I think I did wrong - I loaded the game, and I didn't realise it was already version 1.2, so I tried to load the 1.2 patch. This started to install, but then failed. I'm guessing it overwrote something perhaps. Also, I messed about with the game video settings before loading starting a new game. The fix Just uninstalled the game, and reinstalled the game leaving everything default. It now works. Hope this helps somebody ![]() The 1.2 patch is the issue. (I think) |

I just bought this game off of Steam and I'm having a similar problem. I can get through the first level, but when loading Upper Seattle the load screen crashes back to the Desktop. There is no error message that pops up when this happens and there is no error in the Event Log for it either. Anything else then just rolling back drivers? Seeing that this is only happening on one game I really can't justify rolling back drivers that could affect other things on this computer.

Another option: Try lowering all graphics and sound options to minimum before going through the transition to Upper Seattle.
You might also check the Thief forums for this problem with Thief Deadly Shadows -- it uses the same engine, so the fix may be similar. Lastly, check to see if there's anything on the Steam forums for the problem. There may be something unique in their version.

Another thought: See if your CD/DVD/harddrive drivers need updating.

I have this problem too, though I didn't get this game through Steam. I used to play this game all the time, I just haven't touched it in a very long while. I'm kind of amazed it would crash now, after all these years (I'm still using the same computer too). I reinstalled the game from DVD yesterday. I'm running the latest version of the game (the DVD already had the latest version of the game on it, no patch required) and none of the solutions above work for me.
After getting out of the academy it tries to load Seattle. When the progress bar reaches 98% it jumps back and forth between 100% and 98% once or twice. Then the game crashes and boots me back to the desktop without leaving me an error message. It's really hard to describe how this problem manifests itself. After the first crash I noticed my latest savegame had become corrupted, the one that's by the way updated during the level transition (the game always leaves a message in the loadings when it updates one, 'updating current save'). I could no longer load it. I picked up the savegame prior to that and proceeded back to the level transition between the two maps (the elevator). It crashed again. I also tried to create a new savegame in a new location, in the Biolabs just before the same level transition. The game immediately crashed when I tried to save it there. No error message. Maybe whatever causes the game to crash is perhaps situated in the Biolabs and not the Seattle map after it? I have an ATI9800xt GPU running on Omega driver, v3,8. AMD XP 2400, 1 GB memory. I momentarily tried updating motherboard and GPU drivers, but that didn't help so I reverted back to my old setup (I'm not looking for trouble when things are working fine). This setup has proven to be *quite* stable over the years. I only updated the Omega Drivers once when TES:Oblivion was released. And even then it wasn't really because of a problem I experienced, but my desire for a due performance increase. I'm experiencing some weird crashes too...
Type 1 crash: The game just shuts down to desktop, no warning, no nothing. As if you hit Alt+F4 in any other application. Type 2 crash: The entire computer stops, the monitor loses signal to the PC and the speakers just goes beeeeeep until I hit the reset-button on the PC. After reboot, there's nothing usefull in the system-logs. I'm running the game on a Radeon 9700 Pro , with some rather old Catalyst Drivers. I never experienced the "Type 2 crash" when I ran the game on my old GeForce 4 Ti card. Although, I did experience "Type 1 crash" on the GeForce 4 Ti until I updated the game to v1.2 ... Any ideas? |

Just wanted to follow-up on this ... I bought a new graphics-card now, GeForce ... After 3-4 hours of continous gaming, still no problems, glitches or crashes, which leads me to conclude that it's either the ATi cards or the drivers that

I loaded the task manager a few seconds before dx2 _always_ crashes and a VIKTORIA program came up, though it was difficult to use while dx2 gnawed at the edges of it making only a third of it visible. It details a lot about the crash that I can't understand.
The way my comp crashes seems to be the same problem that everyone else in the thread is experiencing. I can provide a hijack this log or other specs if necessary. A VIKTORIA error means that your graphics card is outdated. There's quite a few topics about it on the forum if you'd take the time to look around.

Look, an integrated graphics card is always going to be a failure for any type of gaming, even if the game is four years old. If the game was like ten years old, sure, it would be enough. An integrated graphics card has no memory on it. It steals memory from your system RAM to be used.
Anyway, what are your exact system specs? Have you tried updating drivers? Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall? |

Makes sense. That's unfortunate. I thought the boundary for playing any game on integrated video would be shorter than only those which are 10 years older than said computer. I'll do a driver update and try again... or get a comp with a better card... or just find a friend with a capable box.

An integrated graphics card can work if you have 2GB of RAM or more. That leaves plenty of RAM for your system to do other things with. If you have less than that, just don't expect to be able to do a lot of hardcore gaming. You'll have to play on the absolutely lowest settings. Gaming requires a decent non integrated card. If you have a newer motherboard, you can find DX9 PCI-Express cards for a decent price.
Keep in mind that Deus Ex: Invisible War is one of those games that was poorly ported over to the PC. It barely worked on the X-Box, so don't cross your fingers and hold your breath till your face turns blue. |

I see you have an AMD dual core processor. Visit AMD's website and look for the dual core optimizer. That might fix your problems with running the game. I know it fixed mine. Also, it seems your computer can barely even handle Vista. The next time you get a new computer, build one yourself. You can build ones that run Vista better than that for about $500 or so. |

Anyone recommend a particular graphics card that can meet the recommended hardware for Oblivion? I'd prefer the least expensive option. I'll also probably have to get some additional RAM. Speaking of RAM, can anyone explain to me the issue of it saying on the box that I have 1GB while the computer itself tells me I've got 898? I bought this thing for $450, I'm not much into building my own comps, I'm not very tech-savy. I also don't entirely care about the game looking extremely pretty, although that is nice. I'm more concerned with playability. |

For something under $100 for a video card, I'd suggest either an 8400GS from Nvidia, or a Radeon 2400 from ATI (You'll get a little more bang for the buck if you go with the 8400GS, and twice the amount of memory on the card).
It might be saying you only have 898 for one of two reasons. 1.) It could be telling you how much you have available (not currently being used. 2.) Windows is using a different system of memory size. Instead of binary, it's using something else. You have enough RAM, so I wouldn't worry with that. If you really want more, you'll have to tell us what type it supports (it should tell you this in the manual that came with the PC, or on the vendors website). Anyway, those two recommendations are under the $100 price range. If you live in America, you can buy them on http://www.newegg.com |
