Default Won't load with ANY gamepad

Hi all,

I wrongly posted this in the non-technical forum... just reposting here to correct that:

I was playing TRL v1.0 with my Xbox 360 pad. Like everyone else, I wanted smoother Next-Gen effects so I patched to 1.1. Now the game refuses to load when a gamepad is plugged in. I have 3 different pads - Xbox 360 pad, Logitech Rumblepad 2 and an original Xbox pad plugged in via adapter box. When I try to load the game up with any of them plugged in, I just get a black screen. It hasn't really crashed because I can Ctrl-Esc to the desktop, end TRL with the task manager and continue on, but it won't even make it to the first screen with the white writing.

The moment I take the pad out, the game loads fine. I have experienced no crashes at any stage through my brief time with the game.

If anybody has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them. I hate to have to choose between better control and better graphics. To play TRL without either is just not the same experience to me... thanks in advance.

Very strange.
1.1 works fine for me with the Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power 4.

The only thing I can think of is that there may be some force feedback driver problems. Try to disable vibration effects within the game or, if you are willing, uninstall any gamepad drivers you have and try to run them with the Windows default human interface device drivers.

Hummm... at that screen, my XBox 360 controller rumbles a bit - maybe the control configuration from before the patch isn't totally compatible with the patched one?

Anyway, try deleting "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Crystal Dynamics\Tomb Raider: Legend" using regedit, which will reset your configuration (not your save games, those are in your "My Documents" folder on the hard drive).

I can say it works fine with my XBox 360 controller, so it should work for you...

Thanks for the replies.

I tried deleting the entire "Tomb Raider: Legend" registry key - still getting stuck at the black screen.

Leak, are you using the MS supplied driver or the modified XBCD driver to run your 360 pad?

Mightyjoe, as far as I can tell, vibration effects are disabled and always have been. I did actually try uninstalling the XBCD drivers, but I don't know how to uninstall the MS 360 pad and Logitech drivers. There's no uninstall program and they're not shown in the "Add/Remove Programs" list. How would I uninstall them then?

I was using the MS drivers at first, but rumbling wouldn't work with them, so I switched to the XBCD drivers and happily played through the game with them...

This IS weird...

hehehe... yeah tell me about it.

Tell me, how did you switch to the XBCD drivers after using the MS one? Everytime I plug in the 360 controller it auto-installs the MS driver. If I try to manually update the driver to XBCD from Device Manager the gamepad doesn't work properly... ie cannot even calibrate it because all the button mappings seem to be confused.

The 1.1 patch added specific support for the X360 controller using XInput. So you will now also get rumble using the MS drivers. No need for XBCD.

I uninstalled everything related to the gamepad (the controller and the input class it was attached to IIRC) from device manager and wiped the corresponding .INF file from %systemroot%\INF (so it wouldn't be autodetected anymore).

Then I installed the 1.07 XBCD driver (which doesn't work with a 360 controller) for the controller setup program and replaced the driver files with the one found here. If you then scan for changes in device manager it should find the controller and install the XBCD driver automatically. Just make sure the MS drivers can't be found.

Thanks Leak. I did all that and it does now use the XBCD drivers. Unfortunately the game is still only going to black screen. If Jurjen is right, it's kinda irrelevant with v1.1 anyway.

Besides, I kinda had a feeling it wouldn't just be a 360 pad driver problem, seeing as it does the same thing when my Logitech Rumblepad 2 is being used. The problem is probably elsewhere... but where that might be is beyond me...
