What do you mean "can"? It's already happening.

Nanotechnology yes, but certainly not assemblers or universal constructors as they're depicted in Deus Ex. I doubt we can beat nature in terms of storing information on assembling complex structures and bodies, so using nanomachine assemblers that can actually travel through the pores of our own cells and basically "look" at our DNA says a lot about how much information the assemblers can hold.

You wouldn't even be able to make a pencil using assemblers, the complex carbon molecular structures (don't need those assemblers constructing useless diamond pencil rather than a graphite one ) , aquiring the proper materials in the right quantities, assembling it in a usable fashion, it's too much for something that small, even when you have billions of them.

You are right about universal constructor & assemblers, and even if we try to invent something in the nanotehnic level with curently existing tehnology... we had a just a pile of junk. But you can't know what tehnology awaits humanity in the future.Because whe don't know all of the natures secrets.Ok maybe sientists know something about DNA structure but nothing realy amazing about RNA.And If something realy amazing and supernatural was found?Like new energy or chemical eliment that can't exist on earth. These supernatural things coud'l lead humanity to destruction or new progress.Peapole can't juge future they only can ask questions with no answers.Everything is posssible, but the ipossible just need a bit more time
I just want to say that if you know the ingredients but you don't know the way how to mix them, then you can't do annything. In this possition sientists don't know either ingredients either the wa how to mix them.
The only thing we have to do is wait and fight with conspiracy.

Even if we can get assemblers and universal constructors to work (lets say we understand sub-atomic physics so well that we're able to solve their memory, coordination, and enviornmental awareness problems), our way of life will change so dramatically it wouldn't resemble anything that we've seen in Deus Ex.

I think we're doing quite well for ourselves at the moment with nanotechnology. All the work with carbon nanotubes (including artifical muscle), tungsten disulfide and titanium disulfide for some VERY tough armor.

I was pretty excited when I heard about the spill-resistant nanotech pants. Funny how quickly nanotechnology is working its way into our way of life in such a subtle manner.

Speaking about nanotehnology in our days I'm prety exited to.Just look at our super-modern friges or shoudl I say "Nano cleaner systems" in friges.

Nano-Technology is already being studied and created as we speak about this. Conspriacys? Well, they were real WAY before Deus Ex was made and released.
