Post Evil cackle in The Catacombs really scared me!

I am on my sixth mission (The City, Day Six). My objective is this: "Get to your fence here in Old Quarter to see if he can help you before you are killed by the Keeper Assassins."

No, I'm not asking for any help. I haven't yet had any problems with the Assanssins.

I headed for Fort Ironwood (The Hammerites HQ), because I'm allied with Hammerites. They can clear the city of the Keeper Assassins while I'm looking around in Fort Ironwood. Well, that was a good decision, because there's a lot of loot hidden in there.

After sneaking around for a while I found a door, which led me to The Catacombs! There were lots of undead and undead Hammerites (can't remember what they're officially called). I could handle them and make my way further into the numerous rooms and tunnels. Then IT started... the scary noises coming from nowhere! First just some silent whispers, but soon I was hearing loud evil cackle all the time! I almost wet my pants when an undead Hammerite attacked me, though I was so well hidden. That was enough for me today. It was way too scary!

Have you visited the Catacombs in Fort Ironwood? Is it anything compared to the Craddle mission? I have read here, that cackle can be heard there also. If the Craddle is any scarier I guess I have to stop playing... Otherwise I'll start seeing nightmares about Thief!

To a newcomer to the series, I can see how the Fort Ironwood catacombs can be frightening. But to those that have played the previous games, it really doesn't compare to anything in Thief 1 or the scary bits in Thief 2 (Haunted library in 'Masks' anybody?). As for your main question, I'm pretty sure the overall respone you'll get is "No" the catacombs aren't nearly as frightening as the Cradle. I've been through the Cradle 3 times yet my skin still shivers everytime I play it.

Yes. You're right. I am a newcomer to the series. Thief 3 is the first Thief game I've played. I absolutely love the game! Still I find some parts too scary.

You are all sure going to kill me for saying this, but I'd find Thief better if there weren't so many paranormal things like undead people wandering around. Does anyone else kind of... HATE them?

Undead hammerites are called "Hammer Haunts" or just haunts, but they are much scarier in thief2.

Default Cradle

Be sure to play the Cradle late at night with the lights either off or seriously dimmed and the surround sound cranked up...I've got a custom computer gaming room in the basement with infinately adjustable lighting for maximum impact. (also use a large screen at 1600 x 1200 resolution for main system)

If you love Thief 3, do yourself a favour and pick up Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age. From the sound of things on your end, Thief 1 may be a bit too frightening for you, but consdiering how cheap it is, it's worth giving a shot. Thief 2 you definatly need. Still my favourite in the series, and pretty much all the 'scary' parts are optional.

And you're not the only one who didn't like the undead. I believe a major reason why wasn't as much in Thief 2 as in Thief 1 was that a lot of people complained about it. I didn't mind it too much, as it fit. But it was nice to having to put up with zombies and demons in every single mission in Thief 2 and 3, unline The Dark Project.

I can't buy Thief 2
Thief 1 is but the graphics really disappoints me after I played Thief 3. The Cathedral is really scary but in my memory the hammerite haunts could be killed by the sword in Thief 1.

The graphics in the first two Thief games are now 6 years old. While they look bad compared to today's games, I find that once I get to playing, I don't notice them after a few minutes. The gameplay was (and still is) good enough that I tune out the graphics and get lost in the game.

Those old games must run quite smoothly with new computers. My computer is sometimes sticky with Thief3, because my driver isn't up to date. Does anyone understand my English? I guess no...

No thread about scary games is complete without mentioning (Looking Glass's) System Shock 2 at least once.

Cargo bays... shudder.

That is all.
