Default Doesn't feel like Thief :(

I bought the PC version off Play.com for a good price of £17.99. When I got it, didn't realise it was DVD-ROM so couldn't play it as I still have a CD-ROM in my machine. I'm not paying for a new drive because of one game and poor performance, so it will sit on my shelf until I buy a new system.

Yesterday I went out and bought the XBox version as it was going cheap. The game is frankly pissing me off as it just doesn't feel like Thief at all. Why does the architecture feel about three times the size as the original games? The height of the ceilings in buildings make me feel like I'm a midget. I found it really annoying looking around everywhere just to see I was in front of a massive building. Smaller architecture would have improved fps as well.

I hate how the game performs sluggishly. Maybe Ion Storm should have made the game on the Painkiller engine, runs amazing and looks fantastic with Havoc physics.

I can't be the only one who thinks Ion ruined the Thief series

I have mixed feelings about the game. It was a good game, but it certainly didnt feel like thief when i played it. it feels alot different from thief 1 & 2 and i believe this is down to the changes that ion storm have made.

1. There shudnt be a third person perspective, it is clear that the dev have focussed on the third person rather than first person. The first person is very scruffy, its like theyve just taken the camera and stuck it on top of garretts head.

2. Although it was a good idea, i feel that the city accually ruined the feel of the game. In prevrious games u moved from mission to mission with out bits in between.

3. garretts general look, rubbish, he shud have had a cloak!

there are many other points be i cant be bothered talkin about em. good game...but not thief.

Yes the first person mode is rubbish. Feel like the camera's zoomed about 100 metres in front of Garrett and you see everything way too close. I feel a bit ripped off having paid a total of £45 on one game!

Actually I bought a new graphics card the day the game came out so I paid out over £200 for this dissapointment!

Wow, you lot are weird. Not a single sensible or valid point amongst you!

Buildings too big that are ruining FPS? Utter tosh. Try playing it on a REAL PC (DVD drives cost about £12 mate, wake up) not an underpowered nonsense of a console.

The first person is hashed on as they were concentrating on the third? Feels totally the other way around to me. The 3rd person is rubbish and no help at all. They need to learn from Splinter Cell on how to do that right.

Don't start about the cloak again. We've all been there and had that row and you are more wrong than you can know.

And as for paying £45 for one game: that’s your own damn fault. 1) Shop around (cost me £17) 2) Play the damned demo you idiot. (And on an aside if you only spent £150 on another underpowered, 2nd rate card, you'll be whining about every other game that comes out in the next six months. Do you just like complaining?)

Yes the engine is utter, utter, UTTER rubbish, but they game is good. And all this puritanical crap about 'ruining the series' is just rubbish. They made a good game. You don’t like it. Move on...

As soon as the insults start flying ("idiot") you know someone can't back themeselves in what they say.

Every other game runs great on my system.

Agh hell I'll just ignore you because you didn't even read my post correctly.

Here's the deal with third person. (the way I see it anyway) They wanted to give you the feeling your'e not just a floating head and arms. The easiest way to do this: build in third person. Besides, look at the successful 3rd person games put out lately. (Max Payne, Splinter Cell) It's a good way to go, I think. As for the rest of it: Loot Glint helps you tell the difference between the crappy goblet and the valuable one next to it. That way you don't don't drop it like the clumsy thief that Garrett is, and alert all the guards in the level. The arrow streak is actually good because you can see where its going, just in case you're using bloom, or are on a TV, or visually impaired. The bright blue doors, ..well... at least you know which ones you can open... As for the difficulty, you can change it to whatever you want in the Default.ini. (Poor, poor XBOX users )
But not feeling like Thief? Come on, its Garrett!
(Great game. Really)

1)there are also people who didn't played the first thiefs, I think they don't even know that there is a thief1 and2 coz the title is not thief 3 but thief deadly shadows.

2)third person is for the people who like to plqy in third person, not everyone likes first person

3)you can download a high-res texture pack that deletes the arrow streak, the blue doors, and the loot glint, u can download it from this forum

There is more about the game that I like than what I don't like (Thieves highway!). I also like being able to play in third person when I want to. The rag doll physics is a blast - especially when oil flasks are involved. You just have to play the game for what it is and quit trying to find fault in everything.

Oil flask: 100 gold pieces
Guard: 10 coppers per week

Oil flash plus guard: priceless

That is exactly the point! The devs have tryed to hard to make the game like splinter cell by including the third person! They were trying to appeal to the XBOX audience by including the third person.

All I'm saying is that it has elements of thief in it, but it lacks the atmosphere and ultimate feel that thief 2 had!

if they had based the city on the 4th mission of thief 2, ambush, then it would have been better.

I dont think its the best game in the series.

This game feels like Thief to me, then again I have not played the others

As for the blue doors, when I first saw one in the training mission I thought it was a wierd texture glitch and spent 10 mins fiddling with my card settings. I blame Nvidia and all those FarCry issues myself. Made me twitchy.

It's all a matter of perspective. There are a few design decisions Ion Storm made that I disagree with. None of those made me dislike the game, however. Personally, I didn't like the foggy load points, and I felt the levels were too small, especially the city zones. However, Thief: Deadly Shadows was and is a far better addition to a series than Deus Ex: Invisible War was. I think a large part of the complaints I have seen about DS is pure nitpicking. People are too busy concentrating on small points they dislike to appreciate the game as a whole.

thief 3 is a good game, prob the best stealth game but it had oodles of faults/mistakes

1.ragdoll was a joke, far cry shows how real bodies slump
2.the bow and arrows were *****e
3 the levels are too easy/too small
4 usa accents in a medieval game are pathetic, use english actors
5too much loot/arrows were too cheap and half of them useless
6

thats all i can think of for the moment.lol

Default DEMOS ARE GOOD

Like someone mentioned near the top of this thread...THE DEMO. Isnt that the whole point of a demo in the first place? to see if you will like the finnished product.

To all these people saying how they hated the game, next time.. play the demo BEFORE and save yourself all the trouble of moaning in the future. A little common sense will get you far.

As for the 1st / 3rd argument... I didnt hear anyone moaning that Dark Project didnt have 3rd person apsect. When DP came out .. the words "splinter cell" didnt even make sense to 99% of the gaming public.

Quote:
The devs have tryed to hard to make the game like splinter cell by including the third person!
Dont tell me "they also tried to make it like quake becuase its a first person" ... duuuh. No.. they made is third person aswell SO YOU COULD HAVE THE CHOICE between whichever you felt more comfortable with

You would test drive a car before you bought it .. so why not play a demo before you buy the full game. Like I said .. a little common sense will get you far.

I liked the City sections more than anything in any previous Thief. I have to admit, first person is a bit off. But this is my favorite Thief game. I want Thief 4 to be a giant, ever-changing City with the missions within it. So that when you rob a bank, you could jump out the window right back into the City anytime you want.

I thought the same when I first started playing it, I've completed the other two thief games a few times over. But once I got to the Hammerite Cathedral it started feeling like Thief and I enjoyed the game a lot more. I think it was just the walking around the city that put me off more than anything. However after completing it I had no feelings of replaying the game unlike the first two that I still play on and off for the last few yrs.

Oh my god...

Third person was great but I didnt use it much though, mostly to look around corners more easily. Most people find that cheating but it isnt, that's why it's there, it's Garret's way of "listening" if the clever ones know what I'm talking about...

Blue doors, are you talking about highlighting? If not, dont read the following message: The highlighting, what's so WRONG about it?! Dont you want to see what item you have highlighted? What do you want instead? A little fairy throwing fairy dust over the object you have highlighted?

The glint on loot items, cant you see why it's there?! It's there because a MASTER THIEF like Garret can spot valuable loot easily as he is after all a MASTER THIEF and knows what he is looking for!

Garret's clothes? I dont feel Garret should be running around looking like a monk when he is on a mission, it's ok on the market to hide the pickpocket loot but not in missions.

Ceiling to high? Psft. Castles are big and spacy, love it.

The big city was a great idea, I wish it was a lot bigger though and more accessible (alot more roof climbing!). Really felt like a city.

Engine was good, it's the DX2 engine, I saw more performance in this engine than in DX2 which lagged alot on my machine. Glad they optimized it a bit.

Thief 3 was a great game, so was the previous games but I really think Thief 3 added more "thief" feeling, better environment and less zombies. The Cradle was spooky :/

I think I'll give this game an overall of 7 out of 10. It features a real intense story and--aside from some small points--had a good Thief feeling. The levels where fine in my book, altho the game was a bit too easy, I guess. And the speeches, the snide remarks, the conversions... really funny w/o getting too sappy.

Small, but annoying issues where:
  • Leaning completely crap. This was much better in previous games. Leaning doesn't mean sidestep.
  • Broadhead not usable to distract people b/c it didn't made a noise on impact on stone and the like.
  • Guards rarely followed noisemakers, they simple jumped on Garret no matter whrer he was.
  • No need for moss-arrows, except for pagan "quest". The was simply no real need to really use 'em.
  • Game should stayed 1st person.
  • Never needed to wipe a blood pool b/c guard's pathes rarely intersected.
  • Blackjacking impossible if target is not on the exact same hight as Garret; e.g. had to shoot those poor sitting guys.
  • Garret looking like a 14 years old in those cutscenes. That was really bad and somewhat destroyed the feeling.
  • Lightgem not always in sync with ambient lighting; e.g. it was dark in bright corners and glowing in dark entryways. Sometimes you had to guess what might happen this time.

The might be some more, but OTOH the good things prevailed. Not to mention it ran thru on the 1.1 patch. Other games need about 10 patches to make it to the first mission at all. Good job, Ion Storm or who ever is most responsible for the QA.
