control mapping problems???

i cant seem to be able to map certain controls, such as LEFT,
to the keys I want - for instance, I want my cntl key as my left
arrow, but it only gives me either joy1 or 'A'.

Anyone know whats up with this, and can I remap it manually?

also, if I try and reconfigure the controls for FORWARD, I get
dropped to desktop

this is a known problem and discussed in many other threads, basically if you unplug your joystick before mapping you'll be fine
