Default Misleading laptop info and Thief 3???

I noticed that the minimum requirements for this game state that laptops are not supported. Is this to say that any laptop out there is unable to support the game or is this an assumption that a laptop is generally not a platform for gaming, at least when it comes to "serious horsepower" in cpu terms?

I performed the system check via Win Xp gaming advisor site http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...r/default.mspx
and it met and well exceeded the minimum requirements of Thief 3.

I have an Athlon 64 bit cpu on my laptop with a 64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 series video card and it handles Battlefield Vietnam just fine. So, will I be able to run Thief 3 because the game looks tight?

"Not supported" means a lot of different things. In this case it means, that regardless of how fancy your LAPTOP is; regardless of the Video, Memory, CPU or any other attribute, if you buy T3, try to install and run it on a LAPTOP, you will receive NO HELP FROM EIDOS if it works or does not work.

YOU ARE STRICTLY ON YOUR OWN.

That said, a number of people have said that they have successfully installed and run TDS on laptop computers.

[comment] The above is not a quote from any official EIDOS source, and is the opinion of the poster only. [/comment]

As far as I understand it, the reason they say that is becaue mobille graphics cards are usually so stripped down they can't play this game.

Chances are it will run fine on your system...but given the fact we never test on ANY laptops I can't tell you for sure that it will, since I have not seen it with mine own eyes.

This is the main reason we say that the game is unsupported (but we will help you if we can), although there are other reasons as well (laptop memory/processor are 'factory overclocked' sometimes, causing 'speed-up' effect in some games, standard 104-key keyboard is compressed for laptops leading to strange control incompatibilities,...the list goes on).

For the most part, for this game, the video card/chip/device and its drivers are the most important part of the equation, and there are very few laptops on the market that have a sufficiently powerful vid-chip or drivers that work correctly with some DirectX features (Pixel-shaders, to start with...)

Basically, you need a gaming laptop in order to play Thief III, one that has a sophisticated vid chip and driver support for it, and the people who have such a beast are few and far between, because they are currently quite expensive. So far, anyway...but that will be changing over the next few years is my thinking.

Odd. It runs on my ATI Mobility 9200 which is the same as the 9000 except that it supports AGP8. I have to run at 800x600 with Vsync & Bloom off & shadows & detail at about half settings though. Some folks are having speed-up/slow-down problems which I think may be due to variable clocking speed to extend battery life. My laptop has a desktop P4 in it & doesn't exhibit these problems. I am guessing yours is a centrino, because that doesn't support AGP8, which is probably why you have a 9000 vid card rather than the 9200. If so, you may get the variable speed problem.

/Edit I'm on driver 6.14.0010.6422

My main problem is that the words don't show up on the title page or any of the option screens, and when I enter game the colors are all messed up. I don't know why this is. I can actually play the game, I just can't change my controls or get the colors to work.

by the way what is pixel shared? how to check it? maybe it has something to do with running the game.. do other games work on your laptop? on mine some games freeze (halo, call of duty, nfs underground) and others run too fast (splinter cell). dont know why..

I figured it out! The problem is the fact that my screen shows no other colors besides black blue white and shades of blue. Does anyone know how I can fix this. This is why I can't ready anything, because the text should be yellow!

Is there something I can do to adjust my colors or turn them on completely?

Keep in mind that they only don't work for thief.

Sorry, but there's not much you can do here. The SiSM661FX is an integrated graphics solution and doesn't support all the hardware features required by Thief 3. If this was a desktop, the solution would be to upgrade the video card. However, since this is in the laptop thread, it's probably a notebook, and you are out of luck as nearly all laptop video is not upgradable.
