Ok, I got the darn game to finally work on my Windows XP machine, using the Run under Windows 2000 feature. But now if I press Escape in the game, or even M for Map, or anything else, it kicks me back to my desktop. What gives????

No, it wont work... just gives me a blank screen and doesn't go anywhere. The game will only work if ran as on Windows 2000. I am getting sick and tired and I even wrote to Eidos to have them fix this issue so I can play. I am reading fix this and fix that, but I have no other problems with older games... just this first installment of Thief.

First, be sure you have the newest drivers for your video card, etc.
Then check this thread: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031 Try everything relevant there. There's a patch for a Direct3d error that looks like this: Thief: The Dark Project v1.33 Direct3D Texture Error Fix. there, try it. Doesn't sound like that's your problem...but it can't hurt. It was a huge pain to get Thief Gold running but I eventually got it working. Might want to post your system specs, card, etc if you still can't get it working. It's the 4th of July weekend so I wouldn't get your hopes up on getting much tech support. |

Ok here are my specs:
Windows XP Home AMD Athlon 1.6Ghz 2100XP 768MB RAM Sound Blaster Live! ATI Radeon 8500 All in Wonder 128MB card (w/CRAPalyst 4.6 updated drivers) The game is really ticking me off. I have the Platinum version of Thief and Thief 2, which means they are already patched when you install them. I will try that direct3d download, although like you said, that may not help. But oh well... I will try it anyways. I have had ZERO problems with old games like Thief. I guess Eidos just doesn't care enough to alleviate the problems that arise with these old classics that people are STILL buying and STILL playing. Oh well, money over customer service prevails I suppose. Last edited by greyhaven; 07-03-2004 at 02:47 PM. |

I'm having the same problem too. I just got done playing Thief Deadly Shadows and decided I wanted to play Thief 1 and 2 (Platignum) again.
Everything loads up fine with no problem till I get to the very first mission (training) and all I get is a black screen, I go to desktop and there's an error message window that says 'direct3d device driver does not accurately report texture memory usage'. I have NVidia GeForce FX5200 with Windows XP. I've tried running it in windows 2000 and windows 98 compatibility mode with no success. I tried the texture error fixes but maybe I'm not doing it right, because they didn't work. I had to try both of them because I don't know the version of the platignum edition I have. |

As I said in the post above...go to this thread:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031 Scroll down to: Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage. and download the patch you need. I assume it's the 1.33 version patch for Thief platinum. For Thief 2 you just need to do what it says about deleting the ; from the user.cfg file. |
