Default This game is about to get returned.

Picked up DXIW yesterday, and installation has proven to be a complete pain in the a$$.

I meet all the system specs hands down (P4 3.06, 1 Gig of RAM, 128 meg GeForce 4, etc. etc.) so I doubt that's the problem.

The first time I tried to install, it locked up. Rebooted and tried again, this time to a custom folder. Locked up.

Removed all traces of the program from the system, installed to a custom folder on a different partition. Install went fine, but gameplay was choppy at best with medium graphic settings.

Looked for a patch and found one, downloaded. Patch instructions say to uninstall game, reinstall and apply patch.

Uninstalled the game and the #&!@*# would NOT reinstall afterwords. Found that I had to delete a few folders as well as the install info folder (can anyone say "completely inefficient uninstall"?). Did so and tried again to reinstall.

Keep in mind that I have to keep rebooting the machine because *every* failed install attempt completely $#*%@ my system and prevents me from opening "my computer".

Where was I? Oh yeah, tried reinstalling and get some "semophone timed out" or something. Delete all the folders again, try to install to the default directory. Install goes fine until the last file ("ionloader.exe" or something to that effect) then errors out with a random message. WTF?

Hoping (though why I don't know, since the install for this game has proven completely %$@%ed up so far) that this file isn't needed (like the Thief 3 trailer) I go ahead and try to run the patch. Patch immediately pops up an error about the registry entries not being there, then starts to copy files, and ends shortly after with some "old file" message.

How long has Eidos been making games? Jesus, they need to pack it in and go on to something else like making toasters or something.

This is completely unacceptable. I get better framerates at higher resolutions from both Far Cry and UT2004, both of which are *far* superior graphically to this game (at least, in the 5 minutes I got to actually play the damn thing).

So here I sit, with another %$@ed system, awaiting a reboot. I've already reinstalled WinXP Pro once this morning, I'll be returning this game before I do it again.

Anyone got any tips or am I getting my money back?

Ionloader.exe is the CD-protection software. It's possible that it's still running from the old instaltions when you're trying to re-install. Ctrl-Alt-Del and shut the proccess down if you can.

You are the man.

As soon as you mentioned it was part of the CD-protection software I shifted my focus on trying to find the problem.

As far as my system getting screwed up (My Computer failing with a "not responding"): If I tried to open My Comp, and then hit the eject button on the CD/RW drive, My Comp would actually come up normally - BUT, the CD drive was not listed, and it would not eject the CD. The reboot I was doing "refound" it, for lack of a better term.

So now I start to remember that a popular game from several months ago had CD protection software that would not function properly with some drives, and caused all kinds of proplems.

I swapped out my new fangled 52x48x52 CD/RW for my old Kenwood 72x (one of the few that work flawlessly that was in my daughter's comp.

Armed with the new drive I attempted another install, and it went FLAWLESSLY. Just got done with the patch as well.

Gonna crank it up and see what happens, but I'm pretty certain you fixed it for me

Thanks much :thumbs up:

How am I an idiot for over-sensitive copy protection?

so thers the highlights of your completely illogical troubleshooting process. Sure Eidos and ionstorm have a bad rep for releasing buggy games. but if you where part of any technical community involving games or even knew what you were talking about you would have known the risk of buying it.

but this probally isnt even the case here should should probally look at YOUr system, having the latest hardware doesnt mean jack if your a moron and cant even set it up yourself.

Whats more is that no one can help you since you spent the whole thread moaning instead of posting you systems specs up

you said "I meet all the system specs hands down (P4 3.06, 1 Gig of RAM, 128 meg GeForce 4, etc. etc.) so I doubt that's the problem."

Is not posting your system specs, that is posting a load of crap.

Its users like you that makes tech support not even want to be bothered with helping people on the forums. If its that bad just go out and by yourself a playstation 2.

Wow, that was quite the long post, unfortunately it *still* doesn't reveal how I'm an idiot for over-sensitive copy protection.

Obviously, while you talk a good game, you know absolutely *nothing* about the technology used in CD copy protection. It's the companies job to test their game on a variety of systems, not mine.

As far as my system, I didn't post anything other than the rudimentary stats because I've been in the industry long enough to know that the problem I was having was likely not caused by any common hardware faults. Guess what? I was *right*, it was caused by the COPY PROTECTION ON THE GAME. I put that in caps so maybe your diminuative mind would pick up on it this time. When you learn the difference between "hardware" and "software" feel free to come back, until then, thanks for playing.

And please, by all means tell me exactly how posting my system specs would have helped someone in this case? You can't do it, they would not have helped.

Quite simply, your nothing but a troll, an idiot, and quite the dumbass to think that you can come here and assume to know about troubleshooting. I'm reading your post and it's so obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. Let's go over it some more eh?

1. You slam me for not knowing how to "Set up my system". Do tell us, what exactly is involved in setting up a CD-ROM? Maybe it's a complicated process for you (because you are a dumbass), but not for the majority of us.

2. You slam me for not being a part of the "technical community of games". What is that? some fraternity? Are *YOU* a member of the "technical community of games"? I'm a Senior Network Engineer, I have a full enough plate to bother joining your fictitious little club.

3. System specs. Since I've been an avid game player since probably well before you were born (I'm assuming you are yet another punk kid with more mouth than brains), and been in the industry since you were probably still pissing your bed, *I* knew it wasn't problem that seeing my hardware specs would make any easier to troubleshoot. Last time I checked, the make/model of your CD-ROM isn't generally included in the posts here. Again, tell how posting my system specs would have done ANYTHING to track down a CD Copy Protection error? Check out the thread you started about your issues, and look at the specs you posted. Not much more than mine, but then, I bet double standards are a part of life for bastards like you. Here's a link to your thread so you don't sprain something looking for it:
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthr...threadid=36353
Yeah, just look at all those system specs you posted, and you never mentioned what make/model of CD-ROM you are running

4. Users like me make tech support not want to bother helping people? Are you high? If the game worked out of the box (ie. fully tested) there would be no reason to HAVE tech support. Your reasoning here truly shows your ignorance, nice one.
