Smile 2004 LOK ART CONTEST - Discussion!

Hey Artists,
Here is the thread for you to discuss the 2004 Art contest and talk about the amazing art that has been created! Which are your favorites?
Discuss!

~Chris

Frequently Asked Questions:
  • Just checking, but are collages using official wallpapers against the rules? We're really looking more for original pieces of artwork; pieces specifically created for this contest and not derived from pre-existing works that were created by other individuals. The usage of any prexisting image that is not originally yours. (Concept art, screenshots, promotional materials, etc.) is not acceptable. Using a pre-existing image for inspiration for your submission is acceptable. As long as it is recreated by hand either on physical paper or via a wacom tablet/mouse in a graphic editor. (Filtering the actual inspiration image is not acceptable). I would probably advise you to provide the source of your work's inspiration and credit it accordingly in addition to your actual submission though.
  • When's the deadline for this contest?
The rules, submission types and deadline information has been posted in this thread.
  • Also what other mediums are accepted?
The rules, submission types and deadline information has been posted in this thread. Additionally, NO MULTIMEDIA SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. This includes Flash, Shockwave or Powerpoint presentations, AVI's etc.
  • Also I have another question. how about crossover images?. Cross-over images (images containing aspects from other sources) are also acceptable but need to be LOK-themed.
  • Can you submit more than one? Simply put, no. As the rules of the contest state:
    Quote:
Only one entry per person. Any of you who submit multiple entries from different forum member names, will be disqualified.
And yes, we are able to determine whether or not you're submitting an entry from multiple forum monikers.
  • Are foreign members eligble to win? Yes. This contest is open to residents of all countries.
  • Can we use a drawing tablet? Yes. As long as you create the work in some format (drawn, sculpted or crafted by hand or digitally, you're okay.
  • Do our entries have to be serious or can they be humourous? Entries can be serious or humorous if that's what you wish to do. Additionally, comic strip-type art is also acceptable.
  • Do we have to stick with LOK Characters? The art does not need to have an actual LOK character in it. You are welcome to make your own characters or environments, we just ask that they be LOK themed.
  • What do the prizes look like? Most of the prizes we are offering are displayed on The Lost Worlds
  • Does anyone else think the prizes are in an odd order? I'd much rather the deluxe kain figure to a signed poster or a beanie hat. The beanie and poster are limited edition pieces of merchandise. They have not been officially marketed to the public hence why they are positioned as they are on the list.
  • It said in the rules that artist must host their picture on their own webspace - is this true even if the person hosting the pic has give permission to link to it? We would really rather you be hosting your images from your own hosting space. This will eliminate any possibility of remote linking and bandwith leeching taking place. (As it is essentially ripping off the site owner). It will also cut down on the descrepancies with regard to whose work is being submitted. Umah is willing to provide hosting for those who may need it. (Contact her via private channels (PM's and/or email for details). If you have an FTP client, Easyspace.com also offers 25 MB of free hosting space which you can use to set up your own account. Additional hosting places include Yahoo!, Angelfire and Deviant Art.
  • Will there be different categories in the contest? There will not be categories in this contest. Nowhere have we requested the ages of the participants of this contest (and such information is not always provided in individual forum profiles). Also, participants are going to be judged on creativity, not on the methods they elect to use in order to create their submissions. This contest is for the purpose of fun. We're not assessing the individual skill level of anyone and will judge each entry equally.
  • I'm assuming with the happenings in Defiance, is some blood-shed acceptable, like what would be the absolute border-line? We are more concerned with content depicting gratuitous (unwarranted) violence, gore and sexual situations (e.g. yaoi, etc.). Blood-shed in reasonable amounts (e.g. vampire purges, attacks on the Sarafan or a vampire biting on or draining a human victim, Kain being covered in blood with a victim at his feet, Vorador's execution, Janos' "heart surgery" etc.) We request that entries be rated PG-13 (or a rating comparable to that).
  • Can we win more than one prize? Because there is only one entry per person, there will be only one prize per person as well.
  • How do I insert my image in the submission thread? You need to upload the image to your webspace either through an interface provided by your server or through an FTP client if applicable. Additionally, you can post images in two ways, one is by copying and pasting the URL (link) directly into your post as the participants have been doing, OR you can review the vB Code tutorial in order to learn how to post images directly in the submission thread. Please take the time to review the initial post of the submission thread in order to review the guidelines of how to size your image if you're going to post it directly in the forum. If you elect to post the URL only, you will not have to resize.
  • If I win, can I trade my prize with another winner? What you choose to do with your prizes after the contest is up to you, however we do ask that you do not conduct any swapping of prizes in our community. You can utilize private channels (PM's and/or email) to do that.
  • My picture is on photobucket.com. Is that OK? As long as it is your hosting account that you set up, then you're fine. I realize many people may elect to use free-based servers (e.g. Angelfire, Yahoo, etc.) rather than pay servers and that's okay. We just want to discourage multiple entries being hosted together and/or ripped off from other people.
  • Can I host my image from my own computer rather than from a website/hosting space? You can host directly from your computer providing you have it set up to run as a server. We don't recommend this because your computer would need to remain on at all times in order for the image to be viewed. Now, if you do keep your computer on all the time, have the appropriate surge protections and some act of a higher power doesn't knock out your electricity, then by all means go for it.
  • If i Have a Drawing, can I post it twice, as one is the exact same thing, just brightened in Photosho, because one is better looking, but some of the detailed qualities are a little dark in the Photo to see very well, so the brightend one allows you to see the detailed parts a little easier, just not as high of quality. The reason this is because i dont have a scanner, I only have a digital Camera, and after about 15 shots of trying to get the right amount of light, I decided just to use the 2 best. Unfortunately no. You can only enter one version or the other, not both. There are roughly twenty (20) days remaining in the contest. Because you don't have a scanner, you may wish to see if you can use a friend's or a relative's scanner OR visit a copying establishment (like Kinkos or something) and have them scan the image for you and put it on a disk.
  • Can we change our picture, to something we like better? You are free to swap out your submission for another piece you've created at any time up until the thread is closed at 3:00 AM EST (midnight PST) on April 16th, 2004.
  • When will the resuilts be posted? the 16th? 17th? the weekend? just wondering. The contest ends in about 25 hours (US Cental Time where I am) So Its almost over, so when will you be judging and posting the results? Also who is judging this contest? Just You? You and Umah? You and some Crystal Execs?

As was stated in the first post of the Submission Thread:
    Quote:
The deadline for the contest is April 15th, 2004 and will be judged by some members of the Defiance Team, Umah and myself. Judging will take place over the next week.
While the judging process is actually based on our schedules, it took a little under a week to judge last year's entries. I would expect it to be about the same (a week or so) this year as well. (The results are posted once they are in).

Hey Reaper007,
Here is a link to Blinc's site where you can see some pictures of the Raziel statue:
http://www.thelostworlds.net/Library-Promotional.HTML
It is the 9th listing from the top.

Just checking, but are collages using official wallpapers against the rules? I made a really cool one a little while ago with pictures of Kain and Raziel, but I wouldn't want to violate the copyright laws or anything. Thanks.

With regard to the first part of your question, I will need to double check on that for you. (I'll most likely have an answer tomorrow). With regard to using a Wacom tablet, yes, you are able to do so.

When's the daed line for this contest, because it can take me anywhere to 100+ hours on a project or one that takes a month. I.E. my pastel Defiance spread art only took me a week, but I worked on it for about 9 hours everyday for the week so i can make the ddeadline for the end of my school's semiseter, then theres also my 1st one, which i might enter into into this contest, giving my schedule, ect which tool me about a month and a half to finish at about 2 hours a day everyweek day.

Also what other mediums are accepted? I know all handdrawn stuff is, but what about something like Flash making or something?

The rules, submission types and deadline information has been posted in this thread. I'm inclined to say that multimedia-type submissions are not allowed, but I will check with Chris and get his thoughts on it and get back to you.

I saw the dead line. and now the prizes.

I think im gonna litterally go ALL out on this contest for that statue. Im still mad that I was out bidded on one on ebay about 3 moths ago for only 95 bucks at the last minute. I was litterally out bided too. I was winning until the last 15 mins. then i was out bid, I bid back and was once again winning, though the last 2 m ins I lost!!!RRRR

I need to win this

Also I have another question. how about crossover images? Ive had a picture in my mind ive been wanting to do which is Raziel and something ot do with FFVII's Vincent. And i think i may waant to start on it now.

Cross-over images are also acceptable but need to be LOK-themed (Don't just stick a soul reaver in Vincent's hand and call it finished).

Be creative.

I was able to hear back on this issue from Chris. Multimedia submissions will not be accepted for this contest.

As I did state earlier, yes, you can use a Wacom tablet to create your entry. I was also able to obtain an answer with regard to foreign individuals entering the contest. That answer is Yes, foreign individuals are eligible.

I would just like to add the art does not need to have an actual LOK character in it. You are welcome to make your own characters or environments, we just ask that they be LOK themed. Hope this makes sense.

just out of curiosity; could I make a tap dancing claymation raziel movie and enter that?

I'm guessing not because of file size issues and such.

Maybe a flash movie or something instead?

guess not either...

EDIT: just noticed someone already asked and the answer was no

I think I'll design a female character or something instead. afterall, LOK is lacking in that area.

Can I still win being outside of the USA? I'll probably enter anyway even if I can't win anything. I'm looking for excuses to play with photoshop anyway

fneh, yeah. Umah said above Forien from the USA are accepted in the contest

I really must win this. I think its a sign. After 3 months of looking for the statue, then finally finding it on ebay German, then lossing in the last few mins, then looking around for another few months and finding the offical maker, then having them be out and onlky a gallery, then this 3 weeks later. Either this is some odd sign or someones really toying with my life
