Default Eidos reveal first Tomb Raider 7 details

And, thankfully, that control system will be getting the overhaul it's been needing

Eidos have let slip with the first details of the next instalment of Tomb Raider - the first game in the series to be developed by Crystal Dynamics after Brit coders Core Design were dropped last year following the Angel of Darkness debacle.

"We are doing a lot of market research, in terms of the direction of the content and of the character," says Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey of the seventh Tomb Raider. "But the fundamental technology is already complete and the character is up and running in the environment, with new moves and a new control system. We are not in a position right now to articulate the creative direction of the franchise. It's still a little early. But we're certainly very excited about what we've seen so far."

Tomb Raider's interface has long been a weak point of the long-running series, with the clumsy controls often leading to hugely frustrating ledge-leaping episodes, so the fact that this is one of the key issues being addressed in the new game is certainly a good sign.

Angel of Darkness was originally envisioned by Core as the first part of a trilogy but, while we've had no plot details as yet for Tomb Raider 7, judging by McGarvey's comments, it now seems certain that Crystal Dynamics will be starting afresh and taking the series in a new direction.

The seventh Tomb Raider is due to be released during the financial year ending 30 June 2005

I guess the programmers have finished the game engine, then.

I hope they don't jump on that "weird camera"-train they jumped on with LOK-Defiance. I want to see where my character is going. And I have no clue how any gamer could prefer any other approach.

On what exactly are they basing that assumption? I mean, it could be perfectly valid, but I don't see anything in those statements that indicate the series is definately going in directions other than those originally intended by Core.

I wouldn't say that exactly. Historically, I've not had a problem with it, and over the years I've not heard of any sort of long-standing fuss about the weakness of the interface. Ok, so the newest entry might have let us down a bit, but I wouldn't say a dodgy interface has "long" been a problem.

Only if you're a smacktard of the highest order, sir

Otherwise, some nifty information. Highly speculative with regards to the author comments, but the Eidos statement is reassuring

I heard on the TombraiderGirl.com Message Boards that TR7 will take place in Turkey and will be a sequal to AoD.

I wonder what new moves they could possibly have? Maybe summersaulting or something.

Gosh,I cant wait till December! (Atleast,I think thats when its scheduled to come out...)

Er.. Is Von Croy French or German or Dutch like Goldmember?

How did he survive back in TR LE when he was trapped in that thing all when Lara was a little girl?

I think not continuing with the trilogy as planned is instantly one of the biggest mistakes that a company like Eidos can make. I for one want to find out the rest of the story. Crystal Dynamics will have plenty of time to take the series in a new direction after the trilogy is complete.

A new control system... Oh thank you! If they just returned the control system to its original un-mollested state (like in TRLR) then I'd be 100% happy!
I'm sorry, but AoD's control system was a terrible mistake in my opinion, I tried and tried but couldn't fall in love with it!

They're doing market research to decide what alterations to make to Lara's character? Here's a good one: CHANGE HER BACK TO HAPPY LARA. The classic Lara, the happy, cheerful, polite, charming one, I loved that Lara, she was great... AoD Lara was a needless destruction of her good, pleasant nature.

They should never have changed her...

I agree with the Moose! Get rid of Kurtis!!! Actually, anti-Kurtis folk might like to see this funny pic I made of him. It's 2nd picture up from the bottom of the page... http://www.geocities.com/burnthetrendie/fanart.html

They'd better continue that plot or I'm gonna get mad! I thought he whole Nephilim thing was so cool!

Oh, RF, funny pic! I actually like Kurtis, but I love a good joke when I see one. Nice job.

Believe it or not the Nephilim race was actually in the Old Testament, and that's what made the storyline so compelling I think, as I stated earlier it would be rather foolish to abandon all of the research that Core Design did earlier.

[Quote]"Jolie is nothing more than a feeble imposter": I agree with you there, I was not impressed with the first movie that was released either. As far as I'm concerned, there was not enough story line to support all that action. But don't get me wrong it might have been good to some people but as for myself, I think they should have made the movie the same way that they made the lucozade ad. At least that way, everyone who is a fan would have been able to enjoy it.

I don't think a TR movie was that necessary but they didn't listen

I agree with you on some points invincible, but I want to play Kurtis in the game.Since Crystal Dynamics are in charge, they might do it like in Legacy of Kain, wher u play Kain mostly and at some parts you play Raziel. If only we could use the occult abilities...

You know, I got the PS2 version of the game. I got really frustrated. It's bad enough to have camera angle change when Lara is doing a run-up, but to have her change directions to follow the camera drives me crazy. You have to anticipate the angle-change before it happens to adjust on the controls.

AND I've never really warmed up the PS2 controls, anyway. It's become a very expensive DVD player.

So I never finished the game. I spent an entire evening trying to make a jump in a warehouse--I think still part of the training level--where Lara started by saying "I can make this jump" but she never did and with the awful camera angle, I had no idea why.

In order to make the jump across the interior of the warehouse from the one ledge to the other, you first needed the strength upgrade from moving the heavy crate near the barrel with the fire.

It's a running jump with grab, and it works, at least on the PC.

An alternative is to climb up the ladder on the outside of the building and go across the roof.

Yeah, well, I might be sexist but more Lara in different costumes, or perhaps a two piece bikini would be nice.

Then again, you should also consider not only looks but also think about womens' characters and humanity too.
