Physical memory b4 virtual memory

Greetings taffers,

I had read previousally on this forum a way to configure windoze so it uses physical memory totally before it tries to access virtual memory. It fixed my problem, but I lost the fix upon a necessarry reinstalling of windoze. I can't find the fix anymore, though, and the only posts I've found that mention it contain dead links. Does someone here know how to do it? Thanks.

The ConservativeSwapfileUsage setting is already used by default in Windows 95 (if it is absent from system.ini). You can revert Windows 98 to the same pagefile behavior as Windows 95 by adding this setting with a value of 1. This setting is inappropriate and ineffective in NT-based Windows (NT, 2000, XP); these are NOT upgrade OS'es to Windows 9x-based OS'es despite the similar product name and the similar GUI. I don't know if it will help in Windows ME, but then that's just another prettied up Windows 98.

This setting makes Windows 98 (and probably Windows ME) behave like Windows 95. Do you really want to go backwards? If you are using the multitasking Windows OS as a GUI front end to only perform single-tasking execution (as was how it ran under DOS) then you might want to implement this "tweak". I know a lot of users only themself do one thing at a time on the computer, but it's not often that they have only one program loaded at a time. You'll have to benchmark to see if this tweak really helps you or not. Other folks like the tweak; see http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/quickspeed/ for info.

Since NT-based Windows use totally different memory management, a lot of these Windows 9x tweaks won't work on NT-based Windows, especially since many values are now ignored. You might want to review http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/win2kmem/ regarding Windows 2000 hard drive and memory tweaks.

Actually, XP and Windows 2000 both will suggest a reasonable
"recommended" size for their virtual memory settings, and also tell
you the minimum and maximum allowable sizes. In XP, right click "my
computer," then select properties/advanced/performance
settings/advanced/change (virtual memory). See also item #7 "Improve
