Default Kill Bill : The Revenge of Quentin Tarantino

One word : Aaaaahhhhhh ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

More words : Makes "Pulp Fiction" look lame.
Uma Thurman is fantastic.
A non-stop, pedal-to-the-floor action bloodfest, in QT's own quirky style. The editing is astonishing ! !
This is really a comedy if you can see it, filled with little touches that make it shine like high-temper polished steel.

Five Stars

Saw it tonight. Absolutely loved it. Uma was brilliant, typical Tarrantino to the hilt. Soundtrack...oh lord the soundtrack!

Can't wait to see Vol 2

Some excellent scenes in this one, like the one in the sushi bar in Okinawa, with the sword maker.

Yes.
Crank it way up ! !
I am still dizzy from that fight sequence in the tea-house.

One is reminded of all the remarks concerning creative genius and madness. How they are almost the same thing.
Such intensity.

Volume 2 !
I'm sure its worth waiting for.

Can't wait to go see it later this week.

My little brother and I ventured out to see this tonight. (It was his first lesson involving the work of Mr. Tarantino and film appreciation. ).

I must say this is one of the most brilliant films I have ever seen. There was not a single dull moment in the entire film, and I was absolutely in awe of the various directorial techniques used. (I'm taking that film class in school right now, and I've learned a lot about techniques and ultimately gained a better appreciation of them).

The cast was fantastic! The plot was incredible! And when it was all said and done, my brother and I found ourselves wanting more. (He even wants me to take him to see it again, as well as check out Tarantino's other work - bare in mind he's fifteen. ).

The DVD will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

I envy your 15-year-old little brother.
He is old enought to understand and appreciate these movies. What fun he will have !
Although that will be somewhat dulled by seeing the best first.
Still, I think that the more you know the better you like it.

Will you be making films ?

I hope I can get it on VHS.
(my) DVD doesn't do slo-mo too well !

Depends on your player.
9 times out of 10 DVD does slo-mo much better than VHS.

Default slo-mo

Guess I'll have to check it out then. The DVD player I have does stop-frames, and you can select the playback speed, but not like my old 4-head VHS, that has one button for beautiful, perfect, see-how-they-did-it slow motion. If I can get that with a DVD, I will gladly spend more money and be happy !

Thanks Dave !

Both the region 1 and region 2 machines I own have superb slo-mo facilities. They are a Pioneer and a Sony respectively.
Happy hunting!

I explained to Gavin (little brother #1), that there would be a chance he wouldn't understand certain aspects of the film prior to going in. Surprisingly though, he did very well. He spent most of the night babbling on to Tommy (little brother #2) and everyone else who'd listen, about what he loved about it (complete with air-sword mimicry of what he saw).

Tommy wants to go see it too, however I'm a bit hesitant. (He's only 12). Not that I feel he's too young, (he's been watching all kinds of violent flicks since he was younger - much as I did growing up), but I don't think he's able to grasp some of the more difficult concepts displayed in Tarantino's work.

As far as my class is concerned, I will not be making any films. It's an intro to film class, where various styles, and techniques are discussed and plot aspects are analyzed. Prior to the class, I did analyze a lot of the films I've seen, however now that I've been enlightened to so many new and intriguing aspects of the film industry, I find that the movies are that much more enjoyable.

Default VHGF

Umah-

Ummm. I would certainly think so !

I'm sure that Volume 2 will have a very high gore factor (VHGF).
But I would rule out Tactical Nuclear Weapons ! ! ! !

The references to "Charlie's Angels" (the original tv series) might include never completely showing "Charlie".

I was thinking about "Pulp Fiction", and there was that part where the character Uma Thurman was playing went into detail about the TV Pilot she made, including the other girls in the team. . . . .
Around and around in circles ?
Or just put on the back burner for a few years ?

This may be Top Secret Stuff ! !

A funny thing abouit Pulp Fiction; I didn't really care for it the first time I saw it, but the second time I saw it I thought it was genius. (Go figure, eh?) I am considering introducing Little Brother #1 to this one next. **shrugs**

Blah, I hope that made any sense. (I've been up for a very looooong time).

EDIT: Grammatical skills are important. **repeats**

The things he does with time take a little getting used to.

As far as the levels of violence are concerned, I think that they just get what they deserve, even what they request.

This is, after all, about the most concentrated revenge you can imagine.

This is why we saw the guy at the end. He was setting us up for Volume 2.

VHGF !

In order to rate Kill Bill, one has to ask himself a very important question:

Why do people go to the movies?

The simple answer to this is people go to escape reality or the boredom of their routines. A good movie can do this in one of 2 ways:

1. Presents a story which emotionally reels you in and gives you an in depth plot which is enjoyable.

or

2. Gives you outright, over-the-top comedy or unbelieveable action sequences that give you no sense of reality.

In regards to #1, Kill Bill was a terrible let down. It was a PWP (Plot, What Plot?). It was simply no comparison to Pulp Fiction. Its paper thin story left you wanting to go home and watch the Discovery Channel. Its believeablility was little more than that of a Ren and Stimpy cartoon.

In regards to #2, Kill Bill was an absolute winner. It had outrageous, over-the-top fighting sequences, a clear homage to old school Hong Kong Chop Sockey flicks. It had more blood than any Evil Dead movie could possibly want, and memorable catch phrases. (Remember the "* Wagon", That tall drink of Sucker!)

In the end, I have to say that while this movie had no intelligent plot, it was entertaining. Therefore, I have to say that I enjoyed it for what it was. After all, isn't enjoying a film the main point.

Examples: Orgazmo, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Baseketball

These are a fine example of movies that are PWP's that are good movies.

Default Plot ?

I suppose you know then why Bill and the others wanted to kill Black Mambo ?
This is the question that first comes to mind: "Why?"
The answer might be in Volume 2.
But it certainly qualifies as part of the plot.

Lightbulb To be fair....

'Pulp Fiction' had little in the way of plot either... it was a series of tortuously connected but memorable set pieces and character driven vignettes... like 4 short stories meeting head on at a crossroads.

But not a great example of a plot driven movie.....

The grand literary tradition coexisted for a long time with dramatic work on the stage.
This tradition was pressed into the new medium (Motion Pictures) because that was just the way things were done. Otherwise, it wouldn't have made any sense.
So we have the plot, where the story is structured around a purpose, has a beginning, a middle, and an end, etc.

In a (conservative estimate) time-span of 70 years, a lot of things have changed. One of those is an actual attempt to simulate some kind of real-life situation, that (gasp) might not have a plot at all, but be more the randomized set of circumstances that might depend on coincidence or complete accident in order to play out to some conclusion that may or may not have a moral. Just like real life ! ! !

I just saw "Kill Bill" again today, and the story has a structure that could be summed up in the notebook kept by Black Mamba.

A movie also has a structure that exists in time, and the people who know how hard it is to make that structure work are the ones who make movies like Quentin Tarantino. Simplicity is part of his style, and he allows the structure of the movie to make up for the absence of plot.
In this case, less is more.

In the intrests of economy, I understand they cut out the part where the Japanese clean-up crew arrives, all in identical outfits of coveralls with high rubber boots, hard-hats and white gloves !

Alright....I'm completely turned. We saw the movie on Monday and went to see Kill Bill Vol.2 in the cinema yesterday. Awesome!
I've got lotsa opinions about the movie........but I rather here them from you guys, so I'll just repeat.......awesome!

It did looked strange that Uma could freely bypass the security at the airport, though. I mean, bringing a samurai sword as a handluggage in times where terrorist attacks are yesterday's news would surely raise an eyebrow of at least one security guard....
But maybe Tarantino had a reason for this.....I would sure like to get to know more about this.

Errr....excuse me, I mean: awesome!

you gotta admit that blood doesn't spray out like that, though
I dunno if Tarantino intented to make it look so unrealistic.....so classical samurai.....but I would've liked to see gushing......in red

anyway.......awesome!
surprisingly I didn't find any thread about the second movie yet......anyone else saw the second movie?

If you wanna see the gushing in red, get the Japanese DVD release of Kill Bill 1. (With English DTS)

Its all colour in the fight scenes, and about 6-10 minutes longer, too.

Check out the "Ever wondered...." thread for a link, or try

www.movietyme.com

I wasn't as enamoured of Vol 2 as I was Vol 1.

I don't mind talky Tarantino scenes, but the dialogue here was bland and not as memorable as his past works.

In making 1 movie into 2 he would have been better served putting some of Vol 2's story into Vol 1, and some of Vol 1's action into Vol 2.

Not easy to say fast three times....
