Question What Game blew YOUR socks off?

What elements of what games has amazed you the most?
Doesn't have to be your favouritist game of all time, just the bits that made you think "Well done, fellas!"

My votes -

Most amazing graphics: Halo

Most immersive sound: Halo/Silent Hill 2 (The former has incredible position accurate 5.1 Dolby Digital, the latter makes you poo your pants and pop the lights back on....)

Most compelling story: Halo/MGS2

Best attention to Gameplay: Halo

Most innovative touch: Limiting the player to two weapons only in Halo

Most well-defined character: Snake in MGS2....using Raiden to offer a different perspective on our hero may have been frustrating, but it worked in this context.

Most heart in mouth moment from any game: The Normandy beach landing in Medal of Honour: Allied Assault

Most baffling puzzles that made you chuckle afterwards: Grim Fandango

Best FPS: Halo

Best RPG: None

Best Third person game: Jedi Outcast

Best beat 'em up: DOA3

Best driving/racing game: Project Gotham Racing

Best RTS: None for me

Over to you.

Well, it would have to be the first Myst game. Up until then I had only played games on my old Apple II Plus (remember those?). I played text games like Zork and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Infocom and what non-text games I did play it was some 2-D game like the very first Castle Wolfenstein (did anybody ever play that?)

So when I first saw Myst I was totally blown away!!!

(I still enjoy the text games...never did finish Zork 3)

Thumbs up Re: What Game blew YOUR socks off?

My votes -

Most amazing graphics: Giants: Citizen Kabuto eye-popping graphics like woah!

Most immersive sound: American McGee's Alice

Most compelling story: LoK: Soul Reaver 2/Thief: The Dark Project

Best attention to Gameplay: Thief - non-linear and so versatile, there's a million ways to play and you'll never get bored!

Most innovative touch: Ability to warp in Material and Spectral plains in SR 2

Most well-defined character: Raziel (SR2), Garrett (Thief)

Most heart in mouth moment from any game: -don't laugh- Prince of Persia 3D, the very end, there are 2 alternate endings; one good, one not so good. You usually get the not-so-good one first. It's jaw-dropping.
I highly reccomend this game if you love a good environment and a good story, it's 3rd Person, sword play, action/adventure. Like Tomb Raider, but better, and a Turban!

Most baffling puzzles that made you chuckle afterwards: TR - TLR; that stupid jumping puzzle in Set's Tomb: I was pulling levers and jumping and running, with no idea what I was supposed to do. This puzzle put a bug up everyone's butts. You all know what I'm talking about.

Best FPS: First Person Sneaker: THIEF THIEF THIEF!!!!!

Best RPG: RPG is, um... I dunno. Is the LoK series an RPG? If so, then that's it. If not, then I dunno.

Best Third person game: American McGee's Alice

Best beat 'em up: Giants: Citizen Kabuto - just shooting up all those Ripper husks is a blast! Have yet to finish the Mecc story, begin Delphi and Kabuto's stories. Lots of fun!
