While playing through "Deus Ex", and getting to the level when escaping from the MJ12 facility and heading back into UNATCO HQ, I became confused with one thing (and continue to be confused no matter how many times I play through it).
Once you're back in UNATCO and meet up with the people inside, (Jaime, Alex, Carter, Janice Reed etc), you talk with them about the fact that you just escaped. The thing is: you just escaped from the MJ12 facility, but no-one you speak to seems surprised in any way. Surely Jaime/Carter/Alex etc didn't know the facility was there, yet they still knew that I escaped. In their minds: escaped from where - if they didn't know about the facility's existence? Does anyone else see my point? Do you have any confusion about it, or perhaps explanations? Indeed, did you understand a single word of what I just said?

I've always assumed they knew JC was in detention but didn't know that it was an MJ12 facility in the basement -- they assumed it was simply a top-secret UNATCO facility.
On the other hand, I thought it was odd that the entrance was in the back of Jaime's office ... |

You could be right about that, Catman - that they might have known he was in detention, but was not aware of the facility. But to me it just seemed a little too contradicting.

i always thought they just thought that he was in the dentention area like catman, but wouldnt Jaime hear the footsteps coming from the big area he always wondered about, wouldnt he have asked JC what was back there, and if no then, then maybe he would have asked in Hong Kong. and Alex in the King Hacker so he would have known about it, he would have seen some suspicious files in the computer system. so maybe they all knew and they just didnt feel like talking about it becuase it was to terrible, i dunno, w/e.

And what about Carter? He was talking like he now knew about the conspiracy.
He said something along the lines of "By and large, most people here are 100% innocent" (to that effect, anyway). How did he find out the truth if they're still trying to keep it a secret from everyone? |

Or maybe they're all higher-level access than JC was and knew the facility was a large MJ12 complex.
![]() It does seem weird that it's in the back of Jaime's office, but I think they were all aware it's a high-level containment place. It's too... top secret for them to ask about, so they draw their own conclusions. Anyhow, when JC's escaping time is (theoretically) of the essence, and it's not a good time to be gabbing about what the government is hiding essentially in Jaime's butt. |

I think its normal that Carter knew about it he is a former general so maybe he knew about it all along. But like he said it could only stop when the bad people go away (probably get shot by JC) and the good people stay.
JC was just new to UNATCO and the others werent they probably knew what was going on in the basement.Just not that it had to do with the Gray Death |

Dearest Cerpin,
I agree with your theory, as Jaime does state that his security clearance is much higher than JC’s when they first meet after the Liberty Island siege. Carter also appears to have a secret fountain of knowledge when you quiz him about AI in Vandenburg. All in all, I don’t mind if the developers perhaps did brush over the fact there was a MJ12 lab in the UNATCO wine cellar. At least they give you an opportunity to go after Manderleys assistant Janice with a shiny new crowbar!! He He He! What is possibly more confusing is this, you attack Manderley first time you see him after Liberty Island, and he pulls out an Assault Shotgun!! You attack him when escaping UNATCO, and he pulls out a pistol! The silly man should be using a plasma cannon by that time, no wonder he is easy tapped in the head with a few rounds from my gun! Heaven knows how he came to be the senior officer at UNATCO. Yours truly, Rogan Josh
