They've used that top-of-the-range Maya software this time and it's proved quite expensive to license it I hear. Any level editor for TRAOD would have to use some aspect of Maya and that would make the license costs even more prohibitive (ie., bigger chunks out of the $100 for each unit sold).

I was about to say the same thing unkwon but Maya Personal Learning Edition is 150 or so MB which is of course quite costly on a 700MB CD. From what I've heard AoD is gonna be on 2-5 discs, it'd probably piss too many people off if that 150MB bumped up the storage space by another disc especially when 70% of people buying AoD won't be modding it.

Thank Goodness there won't be a level editor! can you Imagine is there was? all the people who have made so many things for the the current TRLE would lose intrest! I think it would be very stupid of core to spoil things, when the curent TRLE is so popular.

yes, using maya is not easy, but it wouldn't have to be make it "from scratch" maya. It could have pre-constructed elements and characters. I guess this is what they got in "UT2003".
Maybe not for AOD, but probably after a few games are out with the new engine there will be a level editor. I wouldn't mind buying it as a separate disk. |

I'm actually glad that it won't have a level editor. I know that sounds odd to a lot of people, and my reason is probably even odder:
A level editor, to me, takes away the magic of the game. When I played Last Revelation for the first time, I was just thoroughly enjoying it, not thinking about how it was put together. And because I didn't know how it worked, I never quite knew what to expect (in fact, until I got the level editor, I never even noticed that TR is only capable of right-angled corridors.) Of course, I was thrilled to get a level editor with Chronicles, and I enjoyed using it, but eventually the earlier TR games seemed less involving. It's like knowing how a magician does his tricks. Now, instead of getting involved in the gameworld when I play a TR game, I start disecting it in my mind, figuring out where the triggers are, where the cameras are located, etc, etc. I want to just play AOD without knowing all about its innards. Then, after a few more games in the series are released, it might be fun to get a level editor. |

But on the other hand, I like to play user created levels, without knowing how they were made. |

Yeah, it's a bugger making youw own games or levels. I make simple 2D games occasionally but the problem is you know EXACTLY what's where and what the odds are of any event happening.
One of Tomb Raider's glory points is exploration... making your own level rules that out completely! |

exploration is indeed a powerful plus !
but just because you have the capability to design an entire level and all of its intricate parts doesn't mean that you have to go that far. used in a creative way, an editor could provide you with tools, weapons, cash, protection, etc. explore the possibilities ! |

I like to think that even in a game designed by a sadistic sociopath there exists some element of choice. I choose not to accept obscene levels of gratuitous violence in favor of seeing what there is to see, and enjoying.
If you were aware that you had a choice in real life, you would choose what provides advantage to you, and not play someone else's game, hoping they will give you a reward. Choose. |

Hey, I didn't say, "the red pill or the blue pill" ! !
But yeah, the Matrix Reloaded was ok. Even though it is rehashed Gibson, the concepts and visuals are still hot. The thing that I don't understand is why they have to resort to kung fu and HK's when they could just "think" the baddies into some convenient dumpster ! If you really existed in cyber space you would have to continually select from thousands of choices, which would all have equal validity. The bad part is that it was TO BE CONTINUED. The good part is that it is To Be Continued.

I for one am a bit sad there wont be a editor shipping with AOD! One of the my favorite games (which shall remain nameless) shipped with a superb Editor and now has a massive online modding community so that when the game is completed you still get so much value for your money! Now granted the game I am talking about is a slightly different genre from AOD but there is no reason why it could not work with AOD as well! Slightly disappointed
But I wont be too bad if the game is half as good as it is looking

I agree.
It saddens me somewhat, though. If AOD is the new benchmark then all of those wonderful early games will be swept away. Going back to them will never be the same. Like what happened with TES, and everything before that. Right then ! Stiff upper lip ! Don't get all moshy ! (sniff). |
