![]() Like concerned fathers tapping their watches on their daughter's prom night, gamers have been wondering where the hell Lara Croft is. First November 2002, then January '03, then March, then whenever -- countless checkmarks on a calendar that just keeps getting fatter and fatter. But she's hardly been making out with some pimply-faced boy in the back seat of daddy's Volvo. Saucy Ms. Croft, in all her busty glory, has been in the process of the ultimate digital makeover -- and botox has nothin' on this gal. After feeling up -- err, out -- a level of The Angel of Darkness in February, it was apparent that the sassy tomb raider was making progress after a disappointing showcase late in 2002. Core Design, to its credit, seems to have come a long way in a very short amount of time -- and I'll admit that I was one of the most outspoken critics regarding the fine lady's next-gen facelift. Here's what's already been said: 1) This PS2-exclusive is the darkest of the franchise, ripe with double-cross plot pretzels and the venomous tang of murder; 2) There's a second playable protagonist by the name of Curtis Trent (now with a C again?), a scruffy explorer who seeks the same vintage paintings that Lara does; and 3) The title Tomb Raider is no longer literal, as the seedy underworld of Paris, France is the volatile setting of Angel of Darkness. Conveniently, the drama-rich script provides ample stretching room for Croft's wide range of newfound abilities. When you power up the game, stealth will be your only real defense against the array of baddies bent on slitting your throat. Gradually, you'll acquire a small arsenal of guns, knives, and other murderous tools -- which, in quite a surprising move, actually appear on Lara's body at all times, whether it's pistols on hip holsters or a shotgun strapped on her back. In the previously unseen Louvre stage, the frisky lady must use her more acrobatic skills to weave through the museum's intricate security grid of lasers and flip past wandering flashlight lackeys. It's quite cool, because it's one of the first times that Lara's huge catalog of animations has been showcased in one locale. From grappling onto overhead pipes to somersaulting under an alarm beam to firing off several rounds of lead -- the transitions are absolutely seamless, a true testament to Core's love affair with cartoons. Herdy Gerdy was a superb example of fluid character animation; now Angel of Darkness ups the ante ten-fold. While the A.I. is still about as helpless as a drooling infant (Damn!!!) and the framerate a chugging mess, the game is currently undergoing some major tweaks and will enter testing to remedy the rest of the little bugs fairly soon. And with a little luck and a lot of sleepless nights, Eidos might even be able to package, press, and deliver Lara's latest by the time Angelina Jolie enters The Cradle of Life on the silver screen this July. Again, we see that it looks good, but it has bugs, its frame rate "chugs" and the AI is bad. Previous previews also told us the controls were bad.
I want to like this game, I really do, but I'm afraid to get too optimistic just yet. I'd much rather expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised. Still, thanks for the pics... no denying that they look cool. |

I wonder how old these screenshots are. As far as I remember we have already heard reports of that white shadow before, and this link ( http://www.gamespy.com/e32003/gallery/ps2/1001651/ ) takes you to a page where the release date is April 21, 2002. Since E3 opens tomorrow somehow I doubt that the screenshots they posted on the GameSpy site reflect the current state of the game unless they were given a special pre-E3 preview.

Yeah, me hopes that http://www.gamespy.com/e32003/preview/ps2/1001688/ is old, otherwise it doesn't look good

I was really hoping for an AI upgrade.. This got me down, but then I realized something..
The whole February delay was to fix the framerate. Now, if they're still saying the framerate is chugging, than it's possible the A.I wasn't complete at all either.. From other, more recent reports, they had said that the A.I wasn't that bad.. (Maybe not NOLF2 quality, but they weren't completely helpless)... Here's hoping. |

I guarantee it won't "chug" on my setup. Dual Xeon 2.4's with a 128MB Quadro4 750XGL and 1GB RDRAM. It's my Autodesk Viz box - If Lara's good she can live next to my 3D renderings

You're right it doesn't help anyone. I was just spouting off
Actually when I bought that box I swore it wouldn't be for games. I may still end up doing AOD on my PS2...- Dave |

guys .. Goran ... that is not a pc screen shot not a cutscene or FMV... it's simply artwork made by core/eidos to help promote the game... don't worry there will be day when games look this detailed perhaps on the ps3 or xbobx 2... or a higher end pc... untill then we are stuck with jaggy edges.
