Default REVIEWS & SCORES - Critical Reception for Thief

Well, since the first review for the game has hit the internet, and no doubt we will be seeing many many more in the upcoming weeks, I thought it would be best to have a dedicated thread for reviews of the game. I'll do my best to keep the post updated with all the scores and links to the reviews.

Good idea.

Is there any info on when the review embargo lifts?

"Fluid controls" they're saying. That's promising!

"It loses it's steam around the last third of the game." That's not promising.

I can get over clunky controls, but not a dull plot. We shall have to see, I haven't yet lost my optimism.

No idea. Although it must be soon, if PlayMania already has their review published, the critics must have received their copies of the game and are probably playing them through by now. My guess is 3 or 4 days?

Read the link. AI blindness is arguably a thing in the originals and it requires you to buy into the whole 'hide in shadows' fantasy to find it plausible. Of course, they could be even more blind than that.

Here's a link that shows the summary box from the PlayMania review: http://www.gamepur.com/news/13695-fi...-design-a.html. It's in Spanish; I tried Google translate but the results were mediocre. Anyone who knows Spanish care to translate?

One thing I noticed, they said it takes about 10-15 hours, depending on your style. Also "there are very many secondary tasks". So not sure if the 10-15 hours is the main missions only.

I'm guessing they rushed thru the Game, so I think if you complete 100% everything it could be, 50 hours?
on normal difficulty.

Probably more in the 20 range. Which for this type of game still isn't bad.

With a score like 90 / 100, whatever complaints PlayMania had are likely minor and don't detract from the game severely.

Nothing surprising so far. Let's just hope there are patches to the AI. This is one of the more consistent complaints we've heard.

The real question is how many NPCs are there in the City and houses..one podcast said you can hear noises but no one is inside.

And I still don't understand what the PCGamer's article meant when there was no atmosphere.

Should we really be paying attention to that? I don't really call it a review, not even close. All it does is point out 4 pros and 3 cons. The actual source is a magazine and everyone is showing the picture, and not any subsequent reasoning or reports, or any kind of prose. If there is any.

It's a seemingly arbitrary score. Only in this case it's even more so than in actual reviews.

That's what I'm thinking. I always take these early reviews with a grain of salt. There are times where they just throw out 9's and 10's with three sentence summaries with no elaboration, but when the actual game comes out the scores are completely different. I'm not saying Thief isn't going to get good scores,(heck I hope it turns out well) But I'm not basing my optimism over some foreign magazine source no one has heard of.

Well, there's no immersive atmosphere is what they meant. Gameplay mechanics could be immersive, but not what you see/hear/feel

You can't trust reviews anyway. With several bad points, the game still receives 90/100? I remember the times in the 90s, when a game which was only near-perfect would reach the 90-range.

That is why a demo is needed.

Here is why even stellar reviews won't impress me in the slightest. Being a good game on its own merits is the least I expect from this franchise. The least.

EM can pat themselves on the back over good review scores all they want.

Kudos to Playmania for the score they gave Thief, but it is the scores from the likes of IGN, Gamespot and CVG that have me intrigued. I do not use reviews to influence a game purchase, more to prepare me for what is coming... GREATNESS! /optimism

Scores are arbritary and say absolutely nothing to me about the quality of the game. I want to see a few reviews or videos done by like-minded Thief fans who know the previous games well and can properly inform me if THIEF is a good Thief game. I no longer pay attention to review scores since my favourite games scored 78, 92 and 90 on Metacritic, and none of my personal favourites have a MC score in the 95-100 range.

Honestly, I don't care.
Reviews only have 1 purpose, to influence people's opinion.

True. Reviews should never be the final say in whether or not you try a game. The fact that mediocre shooters like Bioshock Infinite got such raving reviews, while gems like Alice Madness Returns get bashed by critics, has let me know that there is a serious disconnect between the gaming community and professional reviewers.

I think people treat reviews like some panel of experts collaborated and came up with a final judgement about how good a game is.

It's really just one guy (or girl's) opinion. And it's really no indicator at all of whether you will like the game or not.

"Professional reviewer?" That's hilarious. They're just like anyone else. You don't need a degree or certificate to write these things.

I take reviews with a grain of salt. Often we don't really know how they're grading the game. Is the rating based on a set of boxes that they check off? If the game meets X number of boxes it gets a certain rating? More importantly for me, with an existing series, does the reviewer have experience with that series and are they able to rate the game as a whole? Though, I suppose since this is a reboot, the logic would be that it doesn't need to measure up to the previous installments.

Anyway, salt will be taken.

Where ya been brethren?

Yeah. I realize it's just another persons opinion. But, the difference is, they don't have to pay the price of admission to play the games they review, and they're paid to give their opinion. That's why I called them "professional" because it's an actual job.
