    Default Thief keybinding.

    Let's see what is your actual keybinds. Now I'm going to get real fun to discover how different is reality from what I suppose.

    Mine is:

    Up arrow: run forward
    Down arrow: move backward
    Left arrow: move left
    Right arrow: move right
    Space: jump
    Ctrl: toggle speed
    Shift: walk
    / key: crouch (in TDS), hold crouch (in the other Thief games)
    . key: toggle crouch (in T1/TG/T2)
    Left mouse key: use weapon, throw objects (only in TDS)
    Right mouse key: interact with objects and open the doors (in TDS), interact with objects, use the inventory items and open the doors (in the other Thief games)
    \ key: use the inventory items (in TDS)
    Backspace: clear inventory
    Mousewheel clicked (or "third mouse button"): remove weaponThief
    Delete: lean left
    Alt Gr: block attack
    Page Down: lean right
    Insert: lean forward (only in T1/TG/T2)
    Home: next inventory item
    End: previous inventory item
    Mousewheel up: next weapon
    Mousewheel down: previous weapon
    ` key: zoom in
    Tab: zoom out
    Enter: objectives
    M key: read maps
    R key: release objects (only in T1/TG/T2)
    F10: quicksave
    F12: quickload

    Increase and decrease gamma are disabled, and so are freelook, look up, look down, slide left and slide right.

    I made same movement for Thief 3. I generally use the same key binding for tactical sims/games (SWAT3, Ghost Recon). I love realistic mechanics, hence I like tactical games, Thief is even more so unique because it utilizes realistic movement mechanics, but is a fantasy game. Well, part of why I like stealth games is that they naturally need more realistic movement mechanics.

    I wish more games would have more realistic mechancis. I'm sick and tired of the same unimmersive arcade game and gameplay mechanics most games have. I'm sick of most games.

    W - run forward
    A, D - slide sideways
    S - back
    Shift + W - sneak
    Ctrl - hold crouch
    Space - jump
    Q, E - lean sideways
    0 - hide weapon
    1-9 - weapons
    LMB - attack
    RMB - open/use
    / - previous item
    * - next item
    V - compass
    Numpad 0 - health potion
    Numpad 1 - holy water
    Numpad 2-3 - lockpicks
    Numpad 4-9 - various tools (flashbomb, mine)
    , (Hungarian keyboard) - adjust brightness
    Backspace - drop item
    O - objectives
    M - map

    In Thief 2 I always change the default Quick save/load keys to F5 and F9.
    I always increas the mouse sensitivity so that I can turn around very quickly.

    I almost never use zoom or lean forward. Also, I rarely use speed potions, flares, flash mines, noisemaker arrows.

    Generally, I use these settings in virtually every FPS game with their various functions.

    I suggest you to try Shade - Wrath Of Angels, then.

    I Don't know. It's probably a mix from both T2 and T1 default bindings. I so used to copying the .BND file from one installation to another that I don't even remember what it was based on.

    Directly from T3's options.ini:

    S=MoveForwardBackward 0.500000
    W=MoveForwardBackward 1.000000
    X=MoveForwardBackward -1.000000

    [T3Settings]
    WalkMultiplier=0.5
    CreepMultiplier=0.3

    This allows me to walk by pressing only S button without holding Shift key. Same way you can change all movement to half-speed by default, and WalkMultiplier=1.0 will make Garrett run when Shift is pressed.

    I see that many of yours keep the default settings. Mines are inherited by TDS, with some practical change (like Enter for the objectives, and Delete and Page Down for leaning).

    Mine are pretty standard as Thief was the first FPS game I ever owned.

    W run
    S walk
    X walk back
    Z walk left
    C walk right
    Q and E lean left right

    That's the standard for those keys. I wonder how you feel, with the right hand in that part of the keyboard... I would find it uncomfortable, it's more natural using the arrow keys for the movement, imo.

    Funny, I just use the Shift key to decrease the speed, walking (I guess it's a TDS standard).

    I've never used these keybindings, I preferred scrolling the weapons/inventory with the mousewheel, but now, playing the Strange Bedfellows mission, I've noticed how a bind for the lockpicks would be required, because I should have the lockpicks ready to open a locked door without being caught by the beasts and reloading any time the quicksave.

    I use left hand on the keyboard. Right hand is on the mouse as it controls the camera.

    Funny, I just use the Shift key to decrease the speed, walking (I guess it's a TDS standard).
    I prefer walking on default, as I'm used to moving carefully. That's becouse when I started playing I thought it would be impossible to blackjack a moving guard (could've been some TDS glitch) so I just sneaked past them, and I had to sneak almost everywhere.

    Well hotkeys are handier than scrolling through all the potions, food, keys, tools and mechanist junk.

    That should be more logical. But I was a victim of defaults too: I started with TDS, and the default bind for the W key is running, and toggling the speed with the Shift key.

    I hope that Thief 4 will have different control schemes, thief gold, thief 2, TDS, modern, although I'm not going to hold my breath for it. (I mean as in presets.)

    Something about pressing s to move slowly and x to walk backwards I just find totally sensible. I'm sure many people don't feel this way and prefer the WASD control scheme that has become standard but I can't imagine Thief any other way.

    Also I have no idea why but the * and / key on my numpad have become next and previous item. I can use the other default item switch keys but * and / feel as if you have to go out of your way to find a key, makes the game more of an adrenaline rush as a guard is creeping around the corner and you're trying to find that item you need. It's a self-imposed risk but I like it.

    Yeah some years ago I was a bit bored. I decided to try something different, something that would provide intellectual challenge and excitement. I had a bit earlier read The Black Knight and started wondering whether there would be any games on theft. Eventually I found the TDS demo somewhere on the internet, liked it, got the full game, played it and then I started wondering whether there would be more Thief games, and only then I found TDP and TMA.
