Default Assassin's Creed III - A strong competition

Assassin's Creed III is a strong competition for Hitman: Absolution! Hitman: Absolution is releasing on November 20, 2012 on all major platforms. Assassin's Creed III is releasing on October 30, 2012 for PS3 & X360 while PC version now delayed to a November 23, 2012 release (as usual).

While the Assassin's Creed is now a fan favorite title among the gamers, and now UBISOFT is releasing the PC version almost same time as Hitman: Absolution release. Assassin's Creed PC graphics usually better than Console version in last year's title Revelations. And no doubt this time it will be much better with the new engine. Hitman: Absolution is also using a new Glacier 2 engine. Both the game is about assassination and that's a big similarity. But our favorite Agent 47 is returning after 6 years? Does his long awaited return going to be ruined by Assassin's Creed III?

I don't know man, I know ACIII will be a big game, it will be the best AC selling game ever.

COD:BO2 may get in the way of H:A, I mean all the new cool action gameplay is targeted towards casual market, and in November they will be head over heals in BO2, the only people who may help H:A are the hardcore fans and the stealth fans in general.

Either way I don't care, we stealth fans got three strong stealth games this year, Dishonored which in my opinion will top all other, Assassin's Creed III, and finally Hitman Absolution.

Dishonored seems a very good IP. Master Chief is also returning November 6. And Black Ops II will probably be top on sale for a month at least (damn those CoD fanboys).

I still believe in Hitman: Absolution's stealth system, specially after watching five ways to kill the king of Chinatown demo. I love both Hitman and Assassin's Creed franchise. It will be hard for me to choose. But probably going to play Hitman: Absolution on November 20 and finish it before 23rd then get Assassin's Creed III.

Who cares? Everyone will play what he wants...I like AC, but in my soul I know I played AC, Splinter Cell, Just to full that 5 year empty place after Hitman. I am a Hitman fan. Of course I will try AC. But there is nothing for me better then Hitman and Max Payne. Hitman for itīs stealth approach and great design. Max for itīs story. I am also looking for new Tomb Raider. I love mature direction in games!

For the record, anyone who wants to compare these two I've got some news for you. Hitman and Assassin's Creed are the total opposites. Hitman is a game about tactical precision assassinations, performed by the best assassin who ever lived. Assassin's Creed is about well-coreographed fast paced murder sprees with zero subtlety, performed by the worst assassins who ever lived. One is a stealth video game, the other is a semi-interactive action movie. They couldn't be any more different. You would never compare RTS and racing games to one another would you?

The only thing that those games have in common is one word in the title. One game is about an assassin who does assassinations. The other is a game about a stupid buffoon who kills everyone, that just happens to have the word "assassin" in the title.

Now that I think about it, Assassin's Creed would be pretty brilliant and hilarious if it actually was a comedy, about the misadventures of absolutely horrible assassins whose assignments end up being about as far from "assassinations" as Fox News is from "fair and balanced". But it sucks because it actually takes itself seriously.

First off, let me just say that this is kind of a silly question to ask on a forum dedicated to Hitman. Obviously, Hitman will get the most votes here, if it doesn't, the guys at IO aren't doing their job right. I voted for Hitman, just because I've waited so long for this game, and Hitman Absolution looks like it'll be a very enjoyable game. I like what I've seen so far and it looks like they have improved on everything that was wrong with the previous games. Besides, Hitman was one of the first games I ever played on the original xbox console, and that's a pretty big deal, as Silent Assassin is a game that got me into gaming for real, so I'm not going to not buy Hitman Absolution. I'm not a huge fan of Assassin's Creed, and I haven't finished the second game, nor have I followed the series very thoroughly or taken a huge interest in it. I might get ACIII a little while later, it's looks like a really great game, but I'm still not sure if I will get both games to be honest, past games haven't really interested me in the AC series. Until I decide otherwise, Hitman all the way.

I can tell you this much, I refuse to buy COD Black Ops in November because of this game. I'll just wait to get COD in the bargain bin maybe, as it doesn't look that good to me.

That is hardly a "big similarity." One is a stealth game about blending in and the other is a kung fu, fast and furious action game that likes to call itself stealth, so if you're talking about audiences, they hardly compete. Also with AC3 you're just talking about the PC community, which hardly matters. 4 out of 5 will probably just steal the game anyways.

What is a point of this poll when the title of this topic and the main message are about the competition? (sales)
AC will win because of more impressed gameplay.

No, it will win because it has a larger fanbase, and kept fresh in people's minds due to yearly releases

This is probably the first time I've actually agreed with everything you're saying. Or maybe I've just applied confirmation bias previously.

But with Assassin's Creed 3, stealing the game on PC will probably be justified, almost mandated by the developers themselves. Because the devs have already admitted that the PC version will not actually support PC at all. You need a gamepad for playing because the devs will not remove the mouse acceleration filter. They have flatout said that they intend to deliberately cripple the mouse controls.

And if you can't control it, it isn't a game. If it isn't a game, you can't buy the game. At least not until they get their sh.it together and fix what they intentionally broke. Did I ever tell you the definition of Ubisoft? It's doing the same thing over and over again, expecting stuff to change.

Hitman also had had big fanbase back in 2004, but Contracts failed. So, this bull about "a larger fanbase" and "fresh in mind" tell someone else.

No one actually cares about these release date interference, because whoever likes both games, will save up money for them.

Hitman, of course!
AssCreed will just be yet another clone, just look at AC Brotherhood and Revalations. They are squeezing as much cash as possible out of it, by now.

Hitman, on the other hand. Well, its just epic, nuff said.

You can't compare them they are both different in gameplay and time and ERA.

Yes they are both Assassination games but not the same at all.

And AC3 will not be a clone at all to previous AC games but it will be similar.

In a way AC influenced some mechanics in Hitman maybe with them even knowing it. Blend in crowds? poision, having to get away from cops/security and blend in/escape.

Although in the end Hitman created possabilties for all Assassination games. I always thought Assassin creed and Splinter Cell gave me less opitions then Hitman.

Are you kidding? You honestly think hitman has a larger fanbase than assassins creed? Good luck proving that.

What have forced you to write this post but I will answer anyway.

1. The question is not about a larger or smaller fanbase, but how to attract their attention. Otherwise appearance of new games will be useless.

2. Do you know difference between Hitman fans and AC fans? Latter don't give a about first.

3. The same way acting so called "casual" players, but it is enraging all "hardcore" fans with their obtuse ideas about "how game should be". Hence "casual horizons" grow but "hardcore herd" has faded out.

It looks like you hate Assassin's Creed franchise too much or you might not play them much considering what you said in your post. Actually there are some notable similarities between Assassin's Creed and Hitman franchise. Only a few of them are mentioned below:

  • Both game's major concern is assassination
  • Both games launched four major titles in their franchise
  • Both games are Stealth Action-Adventure
  • In both games, you you to blend in, assassinate your target and then escape
  • In both games there are different ways of doing an assassination
  • In both games, you can kill multiple enemies aside from the main target (except for some exception in few missions in both games)
  • Hitman: Absolution uses 'instinct' mode, similar to Assassin's Creed's 'eagle sense' mode (Absolution actually inspired from AC about this mode)
  • In Abolution you can blend to the crowd which is present in Assassin's Creed franchise from the beginning
  • Both upcoming title has interesting storyline. In ACIII you have to save the world from being destroyed as Desmond in the year 2012, In Absolution you have to kill Diana for some unknown reason (it might not be interesting if there's no twist about this). But ACIII has much more and bigger storyline sets during American Revolution and you have to play as Charles Lee's son Conner, it will be very interesting with some major twists confirmed.
  • The music composer of both franchise was Jesper Kyd, and for both upcoming titles Jesper Kyd isn't returning

Can't remember much at the moment. I am a big fan of both the franchise and both are Day 1 buy for me. Last Hitman game comes 6 years ago while in this period Assassin's Creed franchise born and ruled the gaming universe. And the use of Assassin word is so much into their games because of the popularity of the franchise. That is why IO is using the tag "The Original Assassin" to promote Hitman: Absolution.

I admire UBISOFT for what they done for the gaming in last few years. Haven't played any bad UBISOFT game yet. I admire them more recently for what they show at E3 Far Cry 3 demo, infront of millions of people by bashing Electronic Arts showing " EA" in their Far Cry 3 demo.

I don't hate the franchise. I just think it's about as far from assassination compared to Hitman as Grand Theft Auto is from Tetris. AC is the goofy adventures of a really bad assassin, and Hitman is the serious adventures of a really good assassin. They are totally different. ...I just wish AC would give stealth game players more subtle approaches. Then the word "assassin" would apply a bit better, and wouldn't embarrass Hitman 2. And no, "it's too challenging for you" is not the explanation. There's a difference between difficult stealth and unsupported stealth.

The only thing I really hate about AC is the badly concealed lack of freedom. Everything is tightly restricted so that players could never produce unrealistic looking scenes, with anomalies caused by totally free interaction. You can't even freely take a step left because everywhere you stand, the game glues you in place so that it could sustain the present cool animation set for that contextual action designated for that location. If there is a place that is too low to jump for one animation, and too high for the next, it's impossible to make that jump because the game doesn't have the proper motion-captured cinematic animation for it. And the way the game locks onto the scenery so that you only need to hold one button to run over the entire city, often causes situations where the player will have a hard time simply jumping from a fence to a balcony because the lock-on system can't accurately interpret the player's intentions and basically makes the character do what it wants. It's impossible to know whether jumping will land you on the platform below, the one farther from it, or into the water under both of them because the lock-on system gives the player no choice. And don't even get me started with the intentionally added mouse acceleration that is impossible to disable, that breaks the PC version of the game completely and basically justifies piracy for those who do it, because the PC version apparently doesn't support playing it on PC.

I don't dislike the content or the idea of the game. It's a good interactive story if you're into that sort of thing. The game built around it is fundamentally broken. It's just that the mechanics have been designed in an annoying way that prioritizes appearance over smooth gameplay. Animations are not conformed to free player movement, like in games like the Elder Scrolls series. Instead player movement is forced to conform to animations, which are interpretations of player input, made to fit the contextual action in the game. Combat is completely based on quicktime events, and the interface is very un-PC-friendly overall. And many game mechanics are just throws of the dice with no way to control them, like the dual-blade assassination for example. In a game with good control, every action is precisely in the control of the player. In Assassin's Creed, with good luck you are allowed to walk straight for 20m in some places without the game "putting you on the right lane" -whatever the game might thing "right" is at the time.

There is no "game world" in AC. There's a "grid". There are no buildings or terrain, just shapes with specific spots where different actions are played, disguised as realistic looking scenery. In a game world you move where ever you want in any way you choose. In a grid, you move from one node to the next. You can control which node you go to, but not the means how you get there. In a game world, animations are not perfect because there are too many variables in totally free player movement. In a grid, animations can be perfected more easily because the game has more control than the player.

TL;DR - Animations shouldn't be more important than control and gameplay.
