Default Other Stealth Type Games - Dishonored (Warning: Spoilers inside)

There is this new game being developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Why is this interesting you wonder? Because it's clearly influenced by games like Thief and Deus Ex. Harvey Smith is helping them with that mind you. The game is set in a "steampunk" city and has stealth based combat. It certainly looks interesting and I wonder how this game will turn out. Since we don't have much to discuss I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Here is a link to some footage.

Yes, I think that it will be a great game. Developpers said that it will be possible to "ghost" the levels. They also said that they wanted to develop thief 4 if they could.

This game looks quite like Thief sometimes.

The debut trailer for Dishonored. Viewer discretion is advised (or something.)

It's like a mix of Thief and Bioshock. The developers apparently created Dark Messiah too. The main character even has a "glyph" on the hand.

Harvey Smith is involved, he was also involved with TDS, System Shock and the original Deus Ex.

I gotta say it looks pretty cool.

It looks great, indeed. I particularly liked the video from the first post; that kind of commitment is what makes games immersive, a true experience. I didn't know about their will to develop Thief 4. It certainly would be in good hands. I wish I could hear something in those lines about Thi4f, that exactly what I would like for a Thief game to be. Well, I hope both games turn out to be great.

Also, the guards firing those fire arrows certainly looks like thief. Let's hope we can get our hands in that bow.

To say that Harvey Smith is working on this game is sort of minimizing it. He's one of the lead designers.

Also interesting is that Viktor Antonov, art director for Half-Life 2 did the art design for Dishonored.

I wonder if Harvey's incorporating some ideas for Thief into this. The steampunk design along with "City Watch" and hooded protagonist, and first person style made me instantly think of Thief before I learned of his involvement.

It's from the creators of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah, both games had great Thief-like qualities, and as I recall, even former Looking Glass developers helped in those projects.

It's being developed by Arkane Studios, not Zenimax. Zenimax is the parent company.

I'm expecting it to be more in the spirit of Looking Glass than Thiaf will be.

It's got Thief written all over it, especially the mechanical eye looking through the keyhole. I'm dying to see what the game has to offer, looks very promising... something to play while we wait for T4s release in 2017

The only thing I'm not so keen about is the assassin theme. Most people in the comment's seem to think it looks like Assassins Creed. If that is the case I will not get this game.

Noted.

That's really sad.

Looking at this brings that supposed screen shot from thief found on the internet a few months ago, it looks like it might have come from this game instead.

well, game looks very promising.
infamous assassin with supernatural powers given by enigmatic deity that wants to cause as much mayhem and destruction as possible? Yes please!
Those Mecha soldiers with exploding arrows were awsome

It was announced in the middle of 2011, right away with a screenshot:

Also, more screenshots, concept art, dev interviews, press presentations, previews, a website with a "choose your own adventure" style minigame, devs frequently posting on forums...

And even when they were about to go silent for a few months, they announced it on the forums as well, along with an approximate term when they'd start the marketing again. Which they delivered on.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot, we got bits of in-engine video too.

All that since July 2011.

Thief 4 was officially announced May 2009. (No matter what Coyotegrey may claim.)

Yeah.

Looks cool, if a bit cliché in the story dept.

Also not a big fan of the Fable-esque stubby, cartoonish character designs. Or the forced first-person with no (apparent) third-person option. Particularly as there appear to be scripted events where the player has no physical control over what his character is doing. Watching the computer drop my character off a rooftop and slam a knife in some guard's jugular looks quite a bit less spectacular in the first person, and you might as well give me control if you're going to cling stubbornly to the 'no third-person' premise.

Yeah.
All this just 12 months from release, before that no one even knew the game existed through the years of development. Seems maybe EM are doing nothing wrong, if anything they are telling us more than most do at the same stage of development.

I agree with most of this. I've got no problem with first-person view, but taking control away from the player, even for short times, doesn't sound very nice. The art style might work, but so far it looks a bit too cartoonish for my tastes. I've heard close to nothing about the story except the player is apparently some dude, who was thrown into prison for a crime he didn't commit? (and if you can find him, maybe now you can hire... the C-man) I'm hoping they will actually do something with the Steampunky style; I want to see class struggle and heavy contrast between the working and the ruling classes.

EM's mistake is underestimating the propensity of some fans to turn into petulant babies when they don't get what they want when they want it.

I think that has to do with that they want a large free-roaming world fully populated, for a computer to process that, you'll have to make cuts somewhere.

Nope, it's straight up the art team trying for a fresh look instead of yet more grimy semi-photorealism. I kind of agree with what they're trying to do, as everything in games being brown/gray is getting kind of weary to me, but I'm not sold on their results.

That CGI was very good. But it should be a Third Person Game in my opinion. That would fit the game better. But Bethesda, could be FP TP switch like Skyrim! Waiting for it.

i've been following this game since it was first revealed in gameinformer. it's not a free-roaming world, it's mission based with a hub. you can tackle assassinations in the order you want and they're promising that the actual missions will offer a lot of latitude in how you approach them. hopefully Dishonored lives up to that.

I really love Dishonored cause it is a stealth title, not to mention every thing in the CGI trailer can be done ingame, so the debut trailer was kinda like a CGI gameplay, though I would have liked some real gameplay from ingame.

Yet I really wish there is a TPV option, kinda like Deus Ex Human Revolution which was great, TPV will make me connect to the character even more.
