Default Too Good Not To Try... (Your Advice?)

Hello, everyone– my first post. The original Deus Ex brought me to gaming. It was also the last game I ever played. Now with DX:HR, my long haitus from computer gaming just has to end.

But I don't really have a gaming rig, and so it is with humility and temerity that I ask for your advice on whether or not to purchase this game from Steam. I'd run the game in Windows 7 64-bit, on a MacBookPro bootcamp partition, with the following hardware: 2.4 GHz Core2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, and a NVIDIA 9600M GT with 256MB dedicated (i.e., not shared) VRAM.

I don't expect the game will be able to be high-res with cranked settings, but I hope to achieve modest graphics quality and – most importantly – a smooth, playable frame rate (for me, probably 20+ fps).

Some youtube videos show it looking satisfactory on a desktop 8600 GT with less RAM than me... so I'm positive. But please, lay it on me; do I get to return to the world of Deus Ex?!

Thanks!

Short answer?

No.

Longer answer:

If you're not so sure of your machine's performance, do not buy this game. Look around these forums; look at the hilariously long thread about the stutter bug, and look at the response (and lack thereof) from the developers. EDIT: and notice that people with high-end machines are encountering the same problem.

The last patch for the game was released a month ago, and people are still having problems. That patch coincided with the release of the DLC, so it's entirely possible that we'll have to wait for the next DLC before they patch it again.

The game is badly optimised. Wait until it's cheaper, or until they've patched it.

I mean, to be fair, it's entirely possible that you'll be one of those lucky gits who won't experience these problems. But you'll be playing Russian Roulette with your money, so you'd be better off buying an upgrade or two.

Disappointing I know, but sadly true; this game aint behaving right.

I'm not one to give you advice on the likelihood of your machine running it- I've been enjoying it on my 360.

But I can advise you on whether or not to buy the game if you loved DX. YES, it is fantastic. Watch for spoilers but read some reviews, you'll hear a lot of positivity. You'll also hear one or two criticisms about the boss fights and the way it all wraps up in the end, but the overall experience is varied, rich, exciting and atmospheric. It's a more "personal" experience than DX, and it feels quite different, but chords of the original strike through quite often. Visit the main DX:HR forum here: http://forums.eidosgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=252 and you'll hear much of the same.

As for bugs and technical difficulties, I can't comment on a lack of communication about them, but I've experienced absolutely nothing that has been detrimental to my enjoyment of the game. Am I really one of the minority? I've had 2 full playthroughs and I've played the DLC. On one occasion there were a few disembodied torsos sticking out of the floor, on another it froze and I had to turn the console off. That was it.

You can pick it up cheap now. I've seen the basic version of the game preowned for as little as £12. Don't worry about getting the "augmented edition", you wont be missing out on much.
