Default Thievery server update

Some notes about my Thievery server, for those interested:
  • New maps have been added! You can get them all at DarkProject's website (Mirror here) (the Satellite 3 pack is not uploaded to the server). Several are very nice, and one is based on Lord Bafford's Manor (Bafford)! Even if you don't/can't play on the server, they are still playable in Solo play (except for ToB-Sword Arena).

Simply unzip the maps to your \UnrealTournament\Thievery\th-maps folder and start a new game. These new maps are not in the regular rotation on the server since they haven't been "officially" released, so a vote is necessary to switch to one of them.
  • New players have been added! Please welcome Dalai, Cythe, Phaethorn, Nachimir, Mog, Lurox and a couple of others.
  • The server is now advertised again! Yes, after some deliberation I decided to re-advertise the server. If you had problems with the server appearing with a 9999 ping in Favorites, you can now see it again under the normal servers tab.
  • There is one map that I have been asked to host for testing purposes. Nachimir has created a new map - Breandor - which is absolutely gorgeous and very large, with a complex layout. I will only allow those who play on my server to be able to download the map as Nachimir has asked that it doesn't go public until he is satisfied with the map.

Those that do have the Breandor map and have played it more than once, please post your opinions of the map here so I may get some notes back to Nachimir.

My thoughts on Breandor:

This map is gorgeous! I like the layout with many secrets, hidden passages and various entry-points to the major areas of the map (I still get lost after playing the map 6-8 times, and continue to find new things all the time!). The architecture is amazing. This map would have made a wonderful Fan Mission for Thief.

Unfortunately, I feel that Breandor is just too big for a really good "Thieves vs Guards" map, but is an excellent "Cooperative" map for several thieves (as many as 6) at once. I think the map would be extremely difficult to guard since the loot is so spread out - one could literally run around the entire game and never see even the sloppiest thief. A centralized loot cache/objective would help the gameplay for guards. I would even go so far as to say that the map could be halved and could possibly make 2 excellent TvG maps (it is that big!).

Breandor is a wonderful, beautifuly done map, and it was only the Alpha version. But, I do have to agree, it is absolutely huge. Guards would be running around like a chicken to find thieves. The only thing you could guard would be the evidence, and stand outside the door, waiting for the Thief to pick the lock.

If it were to be split up into 2 missions. Where? I really need to run through it more myself, have only gone through it with you guys on Co-op maybe 3 times. I pretty much agree with what you said LM about the map. (That should come as no surprise, since we almost finish each other sentences now a days)

I do like the loot placement, when I first started discovering where it was placed, it was a treat to find it. OHH! Neat place. Like in the water, on the carpets, actually good places where people might *actually* drop some coins.

And yes, welcome to all the n00b's to the server. Glad the server is advertised again. Been interesting lately.

1) Yes, they could guard the evidence, but that is an optional objective.

2) The mission could be broken up so thieves have to find several keys and a map for objectives. The map would be all of the underground and water areas.

The next map could be actually entering the manor with the keys and map found in the first, with the loot and evidence being the objective.

3) The loot placement is wonderful, and the doors on many of the dressers, nightstands, etc are original and are guaranteed to be copied in future maps.

Breandor is great, although it must have more time.

I have a few screens of BSP holes I haven't converted yet, that I should be getting done.

I have also mapped out the first floor of the map(I had a day to kill). I don't want to post the link to it publicly though. PM me for it. The colors are temporary.

Heh, had no idea that Cythe, Nachimir(although I could guess), Mog, or Lurox had the pass.

Server is listed as [brackets]THIEF[brackets](Private) or something along those lines.

It is still listed as (}{{}THIEF{}}{), but with (Private) tagged on the end of it now.

Thanks for the map updates, Leatherman.

I thought Breandor was a beautiful Alpha map. Nice attention to detail with the objects too (cookies anyone?). The pickable nightstands and cabinet doors were a nice touch. The mirror on the dresser, the 'hot tub', the dartboard, the stove eyes....very creative. Some of the beds need to be downsized because some blocked the doors and you had to jump over them to get out.

The lighting was good and well placed. It is a very large map, for sure. I can't wait to see how the empty rooms will be filled with more furniture and objects. I too like the loot placement as BrokenArts mentioned. You find it in some neat places. Overall, a job well done.

What is the cooperative mode for?? I assumed it was if you just wanted to play the map alone. YOu can play it multiplayer??? That would be cool!

Co-op as we call it, is where everyone can be thieves....together. Its a lot of fun, we do some pretty whacking things together as thieves. Throw bodies at one another, wine bottles for when we want to throw a party. Ahhh......just have fun!

If you want to see goofy co-op stuff look here. The screenshots are on the left. We have tons of fun when we co-op.

Ah yes, we do have fun when we Co-op, but we don't always goof off when we play it. Sometimes we use Co-op to hone our skills, learn the maps, and teach newbies how to play. We have been known to play without dousing torches, KO'ing, or killing and we get max loot on the map. Makes for some interesting scenarios ...

At any rate, we do always have fun!

TH-Intercept can be found here. Not sure if LM has it on the server though.

Thanks for the feedback on Breandor everyone, I was in two minds about a fixed objective but reading this has helped a lot.

Beta 1 is in progress and nearly ready, and I think all of the problems mentioned will be addressed in it.
