FYI: We're working on a patch for those with old drivers still being present. As usual with these things, make sure everything's as up-to-date as possible, yadda yadda yadda.

Which reminds me...I gotta check my own when I get back to Montreal...

Yea I have UAC disabled and am default Admin, so running as Admin doesn't do anything different, but thanks for the idea.

Anyways, I completely disabled DEP using this, and it still is just crashing on launch. It doesn't say that "Windows has closed this due to DEP" message anymore, now it just simply says 'Stopped Working' and crashes. *sigh*

Every time I try to add the game to the DEP exception list I get a "This program must run with data exception protection (DEP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program." Is there another way to get this to work?

Same problem as everybody else. I meet the recommended specs by a long shot, live in the U.S., have the latest NVIDIA drivers (NVIDIA card, not ATI and have never had an ATI GPU).

I manually completely shut off DEP because that's what it said was crashing it at first, but it still crashes now on launch, just no 'DEP' error. I don't know what could be causing it. I'm on Steam also. I'm going to just re-download and install the whole game from scratch while I go to work and hopefully it works when I get back, because I was wanting to play a game that I spent $50 on, but I guess that was an unrealistic desire.

Hm i know it definitely fixed for another user running as admin.. silly question have you tried enabling uac temporarily (i know its hated but it does have a useful thing of being so `in ya face` when it wants something you can see whats happening)

I managed to get it working! It turned out to be a problem with my windows account, so I set a second one up and launched steam from it and the game worked perfectly. So, uh, if you're also running windows 7 you might want to give that a shot.

Well I went to completely uninstall Steam then reinstall it to log back in to my account, and if this doesn't work, Eidos better be working on a goddamn fix for not just my issue but everyone else's issues as well. This is bull

edit: trick question's solution will be yet another thing I'll have to do after this finishes installing on here, but somehow, I doubt it'll work.

Game wouldn't start at all, but after updating the drivers fixed this issue for me. Now it seems the HUD isn't showing (after meeting Pritchard when he fixes it).

im having the same problem,i click to run it, it loads for a second and nothing happens. ive tried everything in this thread, but now im at a loss.
i do have a ati radeon graphics card, but it is up to date andi i dont think ive ever had a nvidia
im getting logs for the .exe crashes also

edit: the logs just say that the .exe crashed.

YOU SIR. YOU are a GOD among men. I came home last night at midnight so excited to play. Stayed up till 6am pulling my hair out getting this thing to work and THIS was the answer which I didn't find till I passed out too tired to try to fix it. Been waiting for this game for years and what a let down that was. Before I run off to go enjoy it, I figured I should come share how I got it working (basically your solution) since I hate how some people must get their problems fixed then run off without telling everyone how.

TL;DR - For me, the fix was as easy as going into control panel, adding a new user (for me I just made another admin, I don't know if that would make a difference), then i just used windowsButton+L (or start menu) and switched users. Didn't even restart or anything. Launched steam from the new account, open the game and it worked.

My Specs: Win7 x64, 6gig ram, Nvidia 560 GTX, Steam

Stuff I tried that DIDN'T work: Uninstalled/Reinstalled Steam, Redownloaded Deus Ex HR, Verified Integrity, Defragged, Broke steam so it would update again, Disabled DEP, Looked for ati dll file (didn't find it), ran combinations of steam and the dx3 exe file in admin mode, restarted the computer, restarted steam. NONE OF IT WORKED. I almost reformatted my computer I swear. I love this franchise enough to do that ;P

Like someone else had said in this thread, I'd never run across a steam problem I've never been able to fix before, I tried every fix, scoured forums for hours and I couldn't find an answer, it annoyed me to no end how every thread assumed it was the ati dll file issue and that wasn't my problem. Thanks again. See you in a week.

i tried this again to make sure this wasn't it, but it still didn't work.

if it helps any, i do get a pop up occupationally when trying to start it that says it might not be available because it is currently running on another user(i was getting this popup with 1 user).

nothing is running on the other user.

Running it on a new account didn't help me, either. To clarify, I'm not getting a specific error message, its just that whenever I try to run the game or the setup through Steam, I get a generic "This program has crashed, Windows will search for a solution" window. Its not DEP, either, since I disabled that.

how did you disable DEP?

update: i dont think its that, i have it set to only windows.

Open the command prompt as an admin, then input: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
Restart the computer for it to work.
(This might only work in vista)

update:still stuck here.

uninstall/reinstall
remove .exe and check integrity
remove the steam .blob file
dep is set to windows only files
i dont have nvidia cards/hardware
mine are up to date.

im out of ideas :/

This is from the technical summary: "Users experiencing a crash on launch relating to a ATI dll file.. for nVidia users this seems related to a file in the system32 or syswow (syswow64) folder under the Windows folder (depending if 32bit or 64bit). For a temporary workaround, Locate the atiadlxy.dll and atiadlxx.dll file in the folder and rename to atiadlxy.bak / atiadlxx.bak. This should allow users to start the game"

Changing these helped. I know that for me, the atiadlxy file was in syswow64 while atiadlxx was in system 32. change .dll to .bak and itll work

I've got a 32bit OS, so do I have a sys64 folder? Because I'm not seeing atiadxy in my sys32.
EDIT: Just found it, will see if it changing those files works.
EDIT 2.0: IT WORKS!
