I could have used a VPN but chose not to.
The release date was announced months ago that US was Tues 23rd, and Europe was Fri 26th.. This has been known about a long time.. All we have done is stick to our launch dates.. we set `xmas day` and stuck to it.. yes people could risk having their accounts closed for breaking Steams T&C but if people knew it coming on 26th, bought it knowing it coming on the 26th, why is it shock when the game is released on the day we set?

That was not my question. My question is why is there a difference between US/Other release dates in the first place? No matter when the release dates are announced.

Why would anyone buy the game from Steam, if one could get it somewhere else for cheaper AND with the preorder boni?

Default Pre-Load from Steam

Hi, I bought Deus Ex HR AE from Uk. I got the DVD so I tried to install it and of course installation doesn't start because I have to wait till tomorrow. No problem. On the other hand Steam allows me to pre-load "some data" by download... but I think it downloaded more than 10Gb! I mean, Steam downloads the whole game even if I have the DVD?

Default Why is it trying to connect to the internet?

My firewall keeps alerting me every 10-15 minutes that DEHR is trying to connect to the internet. It's a single player game, so whats going on?

The game requires Steam to activate and play (only for updates/patches and registering your achievements). You can go to Offline mode in Steam, although I don't know if that will help.

If it were steam connecting for updates, it would be steam showing in the firewall, not DEHR. Maybe it's for the news "ticker" on the title screen?

Didn't think about that, but yeah, that's a possibility.

The news ticker? What's so current about that? Show us a pick of this news ticker.

As stated in the earlier post, it's on the title screen. Right now, there's something about something happening on Monday, the 29th. No one but EM and Square Enix knows what it's about, but there's about three or four threads here speculating on what it might be.

As an aside, it's probably something like on the Dragon Age: Origins title page that announces patches, DLC, and other news that BioWare/EA feels necessary to put there.

I would assume it's probably uploading your saves to the cloud.

I sense somebody who isn't Steam's biggest fan. Why not? The Steamworks factor?

I won't deny that.

Also: lol, I'm not installing the game after all. Steam's currently too busy doing nothing.

@Fox89 Indeed. Steam, as in Valve's online store, I couldn't care less about. But putting Steamworks in boxed copies is another thing. (And most of the time you see me talking about Steam, I will mean this).

Yes. Even I, as a big Steam fan, agree this is bad. I like Steamworks myself, so am happy to let Valve do whatever they like, more or less. But it sure would be nice to have the option. Especially if I lived in, oh I dunno, Germany and came across a game with stupid region locking.

Wasn't there a game recently that almost did something stupid like that? Can't remember the name off it off the top of my head. Deum Requiem or something...

Steam does a great job of slowly advancing the Illuminati's plan.

I don't know about the Illuminati, but I wouldn't be surprised if within a few years, Valve have complete monopoly over PC game distribution.

Anyway, after an hour of waiting, Steam finally cared to update itself. Also told me I'm using a different computer than the last time, which I'm not.

Now it's apparently logging me in, though I don't know what sort of log in takes more than 5 minutes.

EDIT: After several more minutes of non-responding Steam windows, I am finally allowed to actually install the damn game. Already giddy with anticipation of the joys of autopatching. If all goes well, I might get to play the game tomorrow.
