Man I already went over my count and more games keep coming up that deserve praise. Splinter cell is a great series.

lol yeah I do feel bad for system shock 2. I thought it was amazing at the time. But I'm not sure I would get that much out of it now a days. Also DX will get enough love on these forums, it doesn't need my help

Do you have any idea what I would give for a remake of xcom with a battle system similar to Frozen Synapse? Buh bye firstborn!

150 points seems kind of arbitrary, don't it?

Deus Ex - 18
Mass Effect - 15
Jazz Jackrabbit 2 - 6
Tomb Raider: Legend - 12
Crash Bandicoot 2 - 11
Buried in Time - 5
Abe's Exodus - 9
System Shock 2 - 5
Fallout 2 - 11
Fallout 3 - 13
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage - 5
Unreal - 12
Unreal Tournament - 15
UT2004 - 10
Marathon 2: Durandal - 3

But there it is: 150.

Whatever. This is a cruel assignment, and hard on the noggin.

NWN2 should've probably made my list, as should several other games but, to be honest, between picking just 15 games and giving them lower scores and ending up with the same feeling that something was missing, I decided to just give those on the bottom of my list a treat of 10 deserved points.

For honorable mentions of games that I wish I could've fit into my list somehow would go: NWN2 and the MoTB expansion (still one of the best expansions I've played), Fallout:NV, Mass Effect, KOTOR 2 (with the restored content mod it's a whole other beast when compared to the way it was released and you can get a feel of where they were going with the game), Stalker:SoC, AoE2, Assassin's Creed (the series), Icewind Dale, Dungeon Siege, MW (the series), Ultima (the series), Mech Commander 2, Marathon and Dragon Age:O.

Those were just far too many games for me to even try to distribute points to.

I don't know if I should be happy or saddened by the fact that I've pretty much played everything mentionned in this thread.

I wonder now, where did we ever find the time, as kids, to play so many titles?

he...Hey! Just hang in there Frank...

It's not like those days are gone! They are still here...all around us, in the earth, the water, the sky.

All it takes for me is to straight damn stare into an old CRT...and i'm there, like i was never gone...

But now? Time...cannot wait...

Great idea! Here goes:

Deus Ex - 20
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - 16
Medieval II: Total War - 15
Europa Universalis III - 12
Planescape: Torment - 10
SimCity 3000 - 10
StarCraft - 10
Doom - 10
Half-Life 2 - 10
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - 9
Minecraft - 8
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II + Mysteries of the Sith - 5
Galactic Civilizations II - 5
Mount & Blade: Warband - 5
Sea Legends - 5

Damn, that was hard. Whittling it down to the top 15 was more difficult than I expected. But I am satisfied with the result.

This thread confirms my belief that the Hidden and Dangerous series is criminally under-appreciated.

19; Deus Ex.
16; System Shock 2.
15; Thief 2.
14; Half-Life 2.
14; GTA IV.
13; Fallout 3.
12; Planescape: Torment.
12; Bioshock.
9; Max Payne 2.
6; Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.
6; Morrowind.
6; Portal.
5; Left 4 Dead 2.
2; S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadows of Chernobyl (with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. COMPLETE 2009).
1; Metro 2033.

There's alot of other games that I should mention, Morrowind is a difficult inclusion because modded Oblivion does supersede it in terms of gameplay {A.I. that moves through doors!}, though obviously the former has an incredibly compelling setting and rich themes. I loved Vampire: Bloodlines but the third act starting at the sewers is just f---ing awful. I did play tonnes of Half-Life when I was younger and whilst quite revolutionary, the second is a work of art. Also not mentioned is The Witcher as I'm still on the fourth chapter and cannot appraise the game fully. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is another game that should be there, but I can't be bothered adjusting my numbers. Various consoles games such as the series of Zelda games from Ocarina to Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Super Mario 64 also deserve some mention.

I added Metro 2033 at the end in praise of how incredible the atmosphere was, the settlements were so lively, vibrant, detailed and beautiful. I do wish there was a greater open-ended focus and that its flaws of design were ameliorated but it still deserves to be there solely for the achievement of having such an intricately believable world.

I predict with some certainty that The Witcher 2, Skyrim and Portal 2 will be there. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is looking to get at least an 18 on my scale.

Finally don't take the points to be overly serious, it's quite hard to evaluate the relative merit of two great games.

Good question but apart from the obvious possibility of someone simply taking pictures with a camera, there's a number of other possibilities. One would be the use of a virtual machine.

Guys, guys, guys, what's up with all the old games on your lists? We all know anything more than 6 months old is complete unplayable garbage. Why don't you all just play Pong all the time if you love old games so much? A game's quality is inversely proportional to time since release. FACT. Marvel vs Capcom 3 came out in the UK today, and is hence the best game ever made until next week.

But seriously, here's my list, with a few words about each because that's how I roll.

Deus Ex - 25
Obviously.

Final Fantasy VII - 20
It seems to be cool to hate this now, but screw everyone that says that. This game was excellent at the time, and is still a joy to play today.

Demon's Souls -20
What's this? Not only a current generation game, but a console one, in my top games list? What kind of filthy disgusting elitist pig am I? On a more serious note, this game is excellent (barring world 5-2 - oh, how I hate thee) and I can't wait for the sequel, Dark Souls.

Medieval 2: Total War - 15
The whole series is great (even Empire) but this game represents the perfect balance of depth, stability and prettiness for me. That said, hopefully Shogun 2 will trump this when it releases next month.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl - 15
God did we have a long wait for this, but it was definitely worth it. Unmatched atmosphere, deep gameplay and some of the most satisfying gunplay in gaming added up to a unique, and uniquely brilliant, experience.

Hidden and Dangerous 2 - 10
As I just wrote in the gaming general thread, I've got to admit to not having completed this (or at least, not yet) but despite that, the half of the game (or so) that I have played was longer than Modern Warfare 1 and 2 combined, so I feel pretty comfortable putting it on my list. I really wish true tactical shooters like this were still being made.

Shenmue 2 - 10
Was my favourite game ever at the time I played it. The sheer detail in this game is unmatched even today, and while the storyline went a bit off the rails on the fourth disk (you're walking through a forest, WE GET IT) there were enough great moments - some of which were genuinely laugh out loud funny - early on that it didn't matter.

Rock Band - 10
Oh god, another current gen console game. And a casual one at that! I may have to forfeit my place in the glorious PC gaming master race for this. Nonetheless, in terms of sheer amount of time spent on a game, this is definitely one of the top for me. Good fun solo, great with a group of friends, and it's the game that got me into playing drums for real. So yeah, got to be on my list.

Starcraft 2 - 10
A confession: I never played the original Starcraft. In fact, as a general rule, I don't like RTSs - building my base and resource gathering usually annoys me, I'm much more of a real time tactics kind of guy (see: Medieval 2: Total War.) But this just hooked me and wouldn't let go, from the amazing production values (and surprising amount of variety) in the singleplayer campaign to the addictive-as-crack multiplayer, I played this for months, and still get withdrawal symptoms every now and again. And I usually don't play MP in any game at all seriously.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Subsistence version) - 5
Chose the Subsistence version because it added the full 3D camera, which benefitted the game massively. The best of the MGS games by a fair margin. Just the battle with The End alone is enough to gain it classic status: the fact that the rest of the game around it is brilliant is just delicious icing on the delicious cake.

The Movies - 5
Never got why basically no-one else liked this - and I never really used it as a movie making tool, I mainly played it for the management sim elements. Yes, it was simple, but it was constantly fun. Getting digital effects in the 60s, while opposing studios are still churning out technicolor nonsense, never gets old.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway - 5
Hard to choose between Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway for me, but I went with the latter because the story gripped me a lot more. Wonder if we'll ever see a sequel for this?
