I don't pretend to have the vocabulary to explain it, but it sort of seems obvious that this should be so. I guess it's natural not to take events on their own but fill in the gaps with our own knowledge and experience. We don't really hear of thieves knocking out handsome guards very much, so it comes across as a sort of comedy. We can't really fill in the gaps with ideas of the "type of people" who do things like that, because we don't know of them. But we hear all too often about the reverse, and so fill in the gaps with our ideas of those "type of people", who we consider evil and creepy.

You can see similar effects in RPGs that give a choice of PC gender. Often the dialogue and context are identical for both genders, but the way it's perceived is not. For instance, when John Shepard punches a female journalist, this comes across as rather thuggish. When Jane Shepard does it in the exact same situation, it comes across as badass.

It's pretty obvious, actually. The whole series is a metaphor. In Dark Project, Garrett is an unknown, easily hiding among the general population, with nobody aware of his secret. Observe how he's apparently uninterested in others, but goes to extreme lengths in Cragscleft to engineer a relationship with Basso's sister. This is clearly just maintaining the illusion of normality, to help him fit in. Observe also how he can move around the city with ease, untroubled by the "law"? They do not know his secret.

By the opening of Metal Age, he's very cynical and disillusioned about relationships, as shown by the briefing for the first mission. Why is this? It's the oft-hinted relationship he had with Karras between the two games. Confused and unwilling to face up to the truth, Garrett pushed the Hammerite away. Karras's response was typical fo the jilted lover: make an army of robots and destroy all life. Have you never asked why Garrett made it onto Karras's hitlist of hippies, commies, and other "undesirables"? It's because he knew the truth about Garrett. Through the game, Garrett begins to face up to who he really is. In the secret bonus area of Soulforge, his killing of Basso's Robo-Sister symbolises this transition, as does his response to the "Keepers" at the end: Show me.

By Deadly Shadows, he is again one of the "Keepers". Why don't they trust him fully? He's spent years denying them and denying himself, so they're understandably less than impressed. Observe how now that he's accepted the truth, all the "guards" in the city will attack him on sight. They know who he is now. This is a deep and meaningful commentary: sometimes it's easier to hide and pretend to be just like everyone else. But observe how Garrett becomes much more helpful and less driven by naked self-interest in Deadly Shadows. he is clearly at peace with himself, and the negative response he gets from the "guards" is a price worth paying. The message is clear: it may be easier to hide, but it is never more fulfilling. That is the depth in the series, the qualities that many people ignore when they demand cool moves, third person, and more violence, all the while ignoring or misunderstand the vast fiction that makes THIEF more than just a game.
This.

I'm strange that way.

Has anyone else noticed the cog underwear the mechanists have?
I also piled the bodies sometimes with the same idea... actually on more than one occasion I put some people in bed next to eachother too...

They have cog undies? O.o when do you see their undies?

To be honest, what I posted was probably creepy too, but I did mean it in good humour! In so much as molestation can be considered "good humour"...hmmnnng

Your point is fascinating, though.

I suppose it's a bit like "reverse sexism" which is deemed socially acceptable...in that it's fine to depict men being subservant to women for comedy purposes, but the reverse would be seen to be distasteful and offensive.

Garrett is a misanthropic and cynical loner. He doesn't need friends, they just get in the way of his profession. A friend equates to feelings, and if he has someone he's that attached to they can be used against him in some way. He's completely devoted to his work. That's not to say he isn't capable of compassion, but he seems to keep feelings locked away for the most part.

Cutty was a reliable fence and likely offering him a higher price for the Bafford scepter than he could get with other pawns. Losing a regular supplier of jobs and income likely didn't sit well with Garrett, so it was financially wise to break Cutty out of Cragscleft.

Basso was an associate at most. He broke him out for a shot at his sister, but he likely was not looking for a committed relationship. He has needs just like any other man. He helped Basso break out Jenny because she was locked up in a manor that provided satiation for his avarice. I doubt he considers Basso an actual friend as every interaction seems to benefit Garrett in some way.

Viktoria is where things get legitimately complicated. My best guess is Garrett had developed some feelings for Viktoria through their working relationship. He still displays outward hostility towards her most of the time, but this could be part of his cold and cynical nature.

Keeper Artemus is what I would consider the closest thing I've seen to Garrett considering someone a friend, though it's a very cold and stand offish type of friendship. Artemus seems to legitimately care about Garrett and I think he knows it, but once again Garrett's just not someone who is capable of wearing any sort of emotion on his sleeve. He's a professional with no time or patience for social interaction.

I am also a loner, (as opposed to lonely), because I choose to be so. I have my true friends, those I know I can rely on as they know they can rely on me. All others are simply associates that know little of my personal life, I may sit and chat but not about anything personal like I would with my true friends. Having friends of both sexes can sometimes be a problem if you are married due to jealousy from your partner and possible accusations of affairs etc. Since I like a lot of time to myself, having a partner actually feels restrictive.

You can go out when you want, come back home when you want and get as drunk as you want without getting the third degree. You can also go out and buy a big cream cake and scoff the lot yourself without feeling guilty about not sharing it.

In this I can really identify with Garrett. Being alone does not make him an unhappy person, quite the contrary because it is what he enjoys.

EDit: Another way I can identify with Garrett is that I have been told that I am nocturnal. It's true, I love darkness and actually have extremely good night vision. That means I pay for it with headaches when I have to go out in daylight because it hurts my eyes and in bright sunlight, I squint so bad that my eyes are almost shut.

Garrett's a criminal in a pretty miserable place so it wouldn't make sense for his character to be a social butterfly. He's led a hard life, an orphan, raised by an austere secret society, I doubt he is very socialized. He's pretty crusty but he shows sentimentality once in awhile. I think it's implied he has acquaintances in the underworld.

Loneliness is subjective. Especially for those people who have had little to no healthy human relationships. You can't miss what you haven't experienced, nor would you want to. Normal people who get along with others, have girlfriends/boyfriends and generally trust others tend to view all that as a natural normal occurrence, that all people should, or would want to somehow conform to. And the people who can't or won't conform to that norm can't understand why that is the case. Some people don't care that they're alone, or the possibility that they'll always be alone. And some people can even find it comforting. I think Garrett is one of those people. If Garrett's relatives in a family party would start asking Garrett "Why don't we ever see* you with anyone?" -He would just answer with a question: "Why do I always see you guys with people?"

*No Thief-related pun intended
