My sister just got tomb raider gold, for pc, for me and I'm having trouble playing it.
I tried to install it on my windows XP computer and it messed with the video driver SOO bad that I had to shut off my computer and restart. (pull out the power cable so it wouldn't save the problem in the settings) After that I loaded up my install of "Microsoft Virtual PC 2007" with a Win98 OS on it and THEN stuck in my TR-gold disk and everything started fine... however... After a few minutes, I started hearing this extremely wierd clicking sound that wouldn't go away until I shut the game off. (though the virtual PC was still running) And in addition to my audio problem, I later noticed that it wasn't playing the cutscenes. The opening intro was completely skipped. The way I figure is that I need a special codec patch to play it. (I believe this because my 98-virtual pc can't play the RPL files on the disk using it's WMP - I've had other games not play intros because I didn't have the right codec) I don't want to try it on my actual computer again because I fear I might have to reload my OS. (my sister had to do that because, trying to play phantasmagoria broke her computer when she got that same video glitch) So does anyone have a win98 patch that will let the game play the cutscenes and will get rid of that annoying clicking sound? I don't know about that. But as i know, tomb raider 1 is really tricky if you are playing on the pc, if you are running on windows xp you should have a little bit tweaking(i can't get tr1 works in my xp computer). But you could go to http://www.tombraiders.net/ or http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/ .
And i will have to tell you that you shouldn't have bought tr gold, just buy tr1 and you can play tr gold for free. Hope that site will help you. |

I actually have the first Tomb Raider on playstation but she got me this one for the extra 4 levels. (I don't know anything about that "tr gold for free" thing though) If you can't get it working either and you have XP, you should try playing it on a virtual 98 PC. It plays great... except for skipping the opening intro that is. (the problem I'm trying to fix first) and that annoying clicking that shows up every now and then. (but that could just be a conflict between the game and the virtual PC program I use, IDK) I'll check out those other sites. THX But this is the only thing that I hate about advancing technology... it becomes uncompatable with older programs >.< Can't tell you the number of times I've gotten a "this is not a valid Win32 application" error. EDIT: Well I checked out that "tombraiderchronicles" site and sure enough found a patch that I think will work, as my virtual PC says it's using a "S3" video card driver. But the download link for it gave me a "404 missing page" error. So unless someone here has a copy of that download, I'll be waiting for the tech support people to get make to me after I used the sites "contact" option. So I downloaded the escapeplay program from tombraiders so I can at least watch the videos at the spots in the game that they are suppose to play. I finally figured out that I can't use that "S3" patch anyway because it's for a "virge" (whatever that is) and my virtual pc program only emulates an s3-tri. So I'm not going to be able to get them running in-game. (owell, I guess) I did finally get that annoying clicking noise to stop. Instead of playing in Win98, I just created a 16mb virtual MSDOS 6.22 HDD. I had to use my dos boot disk to get a cd-rom driver, and install that univesa thing on the virtual hdd, but at least I can play it now. (I just have to save and stop so I can watch the cutscenes with that escapeplay thing) Thx for the help guys. Time to game ^.^ PS, I still use that virtual 98 to watch the videos so I don't have to mess with my actual computers screen settings. (must play in 16-bit hi-res mode) |
