I think the team would be really happy for anyone to use or host it once the mod is complete in terms of augs, weps, skins and enough maps. All DXMP mods usually are available for anyone to host or use by lan etc. I think there will be a version which needs a server running the HR gametype, but a pre-beta version also which allows you to host the maps without needing your server to run the HR gametype.
Mod Progress: 2 Maps done 2 maps under construction. 4 other guys volunteered for mapping. about 10 music tracks + about 5-6 weps already done by Cataclyzm including TMP and MP5 etc. dual MP5 also, double barrel, etc. Remote grenade exists - [FGS]Nobody PEPS 40% complete - [ZXC]Darma / Foxhound / ? Animation is unstarted Tnag mod and Tactical mod provide the basis for most other DX3 weps, but finding Hejhuka and the Tac authors may prove tricky, so in that case plenty of weps are unstarted. PLAYERCLASS - under construction - Cozmo[XII] UI - looks like it will be [A]llan AUGS Many already exist, but need removal of nanotechnological aspects and building blades, claymore and ILS are all unstarted. Frank CSIS voicing trailers A Yes from Eidos and Elias Toufexis on voice parody SKINS - some fiddling about with skins is going on. Figuring what the teams will be etc. Mechs v Mercs? etc... SERVERS - as you can imagine, DXMP rental isn't common, we are currently looking at changing provider. It's a really good team, mix of Eidos forums and DXMP people and DX fans from offtopic, facebook, everywhere! What we lack in design, is illustration skills, fans in this thread have made amazing posts, which could make fab textures in our maps, also fans with those skills could help make us the DXMP: HR universe, all the signs, screens, textures, notices, adverts, images seen in DX3... also some of the skybox textures we need those kind of illustrator artist skills or more help with this kind of stuff. There are 56k players in remote areas, so we do post maps on download sites, which also reduces the strain on servers if players use it. No DXMP "Human Revolution" servers exist as yet and we don't have anything coding-wise to test yet. I'm sending this map to a few people for private playtest by this weekend, then I should be able to release a DXMP map by the end of next week and post the link here. I'm waiting to hear if Chinny will do the same with Dockside. We'll let you know which DXMP servers are hosting them. Hive Bar will be rebuilt for the mod anyway. I built this one without using de-intersection on static brushes or using .t3d's or prefabs, I figured it would be less buggy/less likely to "critical error" on me. It's not a good fighting DXMP map, the main dancefloor is too complex, a pure DXMP version would need removal of most actors and a simpler room shape. Still it's a lot of fun.

DC Universe Online looks really interesting
But really, how on Earth would I justify spending $15/month on a superhero MMO when I could play Champions Online completely free and you don't even have to BUY it?

Ah man, I was going to create Adam in DCUO (and call him "Black'n'Gold") and post the pictures here. Annoyed someone's beaten me to the punch!
Shralla: I've played CO and DCUO both quite extensively, and I've got to say that I prefer DCUO. For a brief comparison: -Champions Online's character creation system is better, no two ways about it. DCUOs is not at all shabby, and better than most MMOs, but CO's is unparalleled. If you're anything like me, you'll spend as much time creating characters in CO as you do actually playing the game! -CO also has a wider range of powersets, and you don't stick to one, you can pick and choose abilities from as many sets as you like... -.....but that's not always a positive thing, as it makes PvP utterly impossible to balance, as people just create "flavour of the month" builds that are nigh on unbeatable. I stooped playing CO a while back admittedly, but at the time PvP was nigh on unplayable. By contrast, it's great out of the box in DCUO, especially Legends PvP, where you play as pre-set DC characters so it's perfectly balanced. There is, of course, standard PvP as well, and that's still a hell of a lot better than in CO. -DCUO's combat is miles ahead of CO, or any other MMO I've played. It's far more action focused, with no "auto attack" function. It plays fairly similarly to God of War, but maintaining all the tactical depth you'd expect from other MMOs. -Presentation and production values are a lot better in DCUO than CO. The game's fully voice-acted (beating SW:TOR to the punch!) and most of the characters are voiced by their DC Animated Universe actors - so Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, etc. -DCUO is, however, clearly designed for consoles - the menus are quite clunky. -CO had (it may have been fixed now) a massive content gap between levels 25 and 35, with nowhere near enough missions at each level to keep you levelling up. I have nightmares about grinding animals in CO for hours on end just to level up. DCUO has no such thing - if anything, you've got way more missions than you need to steadily level up. Which is good, because enemies give you virtually no XP, so grinding would be useless. -Level cap is quicker to reach in DCUO - 30 vs 40, and each level individually is quicker. It took me about 2 weeks to reach cap with my first character in DCUO, vs about a month in CO - but as mentioned, a hell of a lot of that time in CO was grinding. DCUO was all content. -Haven't really experienced this yet as I re-rolled as soon as I hit 30 in DCUO, but apparently DCUO has a decent amount of endgame content already. CO, at the time I stopped playing at least, had next to nothing. -DCUO also gives you more incentive to roll multiple characters, as you've got the choice between playing a hero or a villain, and 3 different mentors for each. The hero / villain choice certainly gives you a fairly significantly different mission selection (barring a few shared missions, such as taking down Bane) and I believe the choice of mentor does to some degree as well, though I haven't had time to test that yet. ....There's a lot more I can write about, but I'll stop there. The short of it is this: If you're interested in DCUO, give it a try: if you don't like it after 30 days, don't subscribe and you won't have to pay the subscription fee. As far as I'm concerned though, it's worth the money. CO does a number of things very well - most notably the character creator, god damn is that good - but the combat, which is the bulk of what you do in nearly any MMO, is comparatively bland, as are the mission chains. |

I know, but I enjoyed the time I spent in the CO beta, and it's free.
Not just "buy the game and then don't pay for it monthly" either. Just completely free. I feel like no matter how awesome DCUO is, CO still becomes the better value at that point, unless you REALLY love dumping your life into MMOs, which is more or less precisely the reason that I don't play any MMOs. EDIT: Sorry Ashpolt, I posted before I could read your post. I have to say, you do make DCUO sound very VERY interesting, especially the bit about the combat, which has always been one of the weak points in most MMOs in my eyes. I just wish that it wasn't full-price, on account of the monthly fee, and my previous experiences with MMOs. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with monthly fees, as I understand why they're necessary, but personally I'd have a hard time dropping $50 on a game I might not even care for.

See if you can find someone who got it boxed copy, because it comes with a "buddy code." I got it on Steam which sadly didn't get that.
And don't get me wrong, I enjoyed CO a lot too - enough that after playing the beta quite extensively, I bought the game on day 1. It's a good game. But DCUO is better. Understand your point about not wanting to pay, but I'd definitely say DCUO is worth (at least) the initial purchase, assuming you can't get someone's buddy code. Don't forget that CO's actually "freemium" - some features are locked off if you don't pay. |

Cool concept of Yellow Jensen there, like it.

I played lots of City of Heroes/Villains back in the day but eventually abandoned it... When Champions came out, I was interested, but didn't want to pay. Now that it's (kind of) free I'm gonna try it, but DCUO looks awesome too. But I'll probably wait for the inevitable free trial.

Or BF fans waiting for BF3. For a game supposedly coming out this year, practically nothing is known about it except that it uses Frostbite 2, is a PC + Console release, and is meant for Second Half of 2011.
