THIS SHOCKED ME!
![]() Alright guys: here's the flat, frank truth. I was researching Nightwing on a whim this evening and I happened upon the most shocking and unfounded comments I've ever heard about ANY comics character, let alone Nightwing! I don't exactly remember the site, but I know what i saw. During a short bio for nightwing, they stated him as "an androgynous young..." For those of you who don't know what androgynous means, here's the Webster's definition for the word. androgynous--- an-dro-gyn-ous: adj. 1.having the characteristics or nature of both male and female. 2. (a): neither specifically male or female (referring to a person) TOTALLY SHOCKING! ![]() Naturally, I thought the writer was a complete mental case, but when I typed "nightwing androgynous" into the yahoo search, I got TONS of results, all saying the same thing. I can'[t believe this. SOMEONE has to be able to explain this.

You're wondering why people think Nightwing is a 'pretty boy'?

He IS an androgynous character. Androgyny is rarely used in context of being a hermaphrodite. Its more of a term for gender roles & identity. He certainly doesn't act as the masculine character. There isn't really a reason to be so upset about it, unless you've built your idea of masculinity in your life around Nightwing.

Actually in some cultures being androgynous is being god-like. makes sense to me.

I was joking man..but for real I like my Batman to be alone I think he can handle everything in what ever situation....but a side kick or cameo of one is nice for diversification of the story...

He (or she, or perhaps androgynous
) rarely makes a post that doesn't mention Nightwing at least once

Maybe I'm just missing something that everyone else is seeing, but I always saw Nightwing as the more masculine type. That's just my perception, though.

Regarding the comic page posted, and perhaps regarding the internet description originally sending Mad Batter into a bad-fit
, androgynous is often used to describe angelic beings. First of all, I think whomever is the character giving the description of the various characters on that comic book page is clearly off their rocker, just by the words he/she is using, but it seems that this is the way he/she is trying to describe Nightwing here, and it is backed up by the pose that Nightwing has in the two panels. Nightwing isn't drawn to be as brawny as Batman, but he's certainly not drawn to be the opposite of manly. I think their are a ton of men out there who'd be perfectly happy with his muscle tone and he's not drawn to be feminine. He's actually about my body type (and I'm not thought of as scrawny), as not all people can buff out to Schwarzenegger-body-builder proportions (nor should they want to)... Even though I say androgynous is used as a synonym for angelic, the reason it is used is because angels are thought to have forms that are sleek and beautiful and not denigrated to male or female... This further definition I clearly disagree with. Nightwing's just a fit, muscular guy that's very agile and has a form-fitting one-piece costume. And xxhanzyxx is a female, from her declaring such a few times on here

He doesn't embody the most masculine qualities IMO. That doesn't mean he has feminine characteristics (besides his emo haircut). He lacks the defining traits that lock a character to a gender. It makes him relatable to males & females, thats why he is androgynous.
I wouldn't say androgynous is a synonym for angelic. Its just angels have been said to be androgynous.

I kind of overreacted. But I still think that calling Nightwing androgynous is insulting. Like hanzy, I am a die hard Nightwing fan.

Well Kenobi, if I told you "I can't tell if you're a boy or a girl, but I like you anyway" would YOU be insulted?
