so i noticed something the first few times i played through deus ex. i kept playing it almost exactly the same way. i still found new things but there was just simply an approach i had fun playing and i kept doing it.
not once have i really played the game using an assault rifle or shot gun as my primary. to this day i have to force my self into other methods of play. (current game is a front door baton assault, smoke and pepper spray kick trash). i have yet to stray from my original style and have it feel right. you guys have a rut?

I think most people, probably, do. No matter how many ways a game can be played, you usually have your own "perfect" way.
This is the way my most common playthrough looks: I'm a sneaky bastard, basically. I use vents/water, picks, tools, computers/security and non-lethal or silenced weapons. I usually carry a GEP, to deal with bots, and for areas that I've gotten bored with (rescuing Paul, for instance - but I just can't leave the guy to die ). I prefer not to use direct confrontations or Augs, but I will do it if I paint myself into a corner. The only Augs I ever use on a semi-regular basis are Light, Speed and Vision Enhancement (after I get 3 or more in it).Doing it any other way does take genuine effort.

I once did a play-through with all three big guns: flamer, GEP, and plasma rifle in my inventory. It left room for 5 (or nine?) inventory spots. It was fun.
Normally, I'm very sneaky and lethal. I take out enemies from as far away as possible with my sniper rifle and close in to mop up what's left with a knife to the back of the head. I engage only on my own terms: and it's pretty much how I prefer to play any game I have. ME: infiltrator class; F0(1,2+3): evil * sniper who's nigh undetectable. I think most people have a "rut" or preferred method of playing any game. That's why DX appeals to many different kinds of players I would think. |

Try playing without using a weapon. Let me know how far you make it.

I've been mixing it up a bit. I used to forgo either the AR or AS, and gone with the sniper and GEP gun. This time though, I'm going with the Plasma Rifle and AS. It's requiring a bit of a different approach to almost everything!

I won the game with pistol only, anything can be taken care of with pistol, even moral discrepancies

do you guys think achievements are a good way to get people out of their game play rut?
also have you guys gassed a group of dudes in deus ex and then taken them down with a baton. it's a fantastic rush.

Speed. It's my usual tactic in games, from The Elder Scrolls to Total War to Deus Ex. Blitzkrieg is...unstoppable.

I know exactly what you mean, I had realized that I was playing the game the exact same way as the last time and it never occured to me to play around and explore with the many options I had available. I missed many interesting convos...

I only played the game once where Paul died. I just can't bring myself to let him die again because it's like emotionally hooked in my brain that I don't like it when Paul dies... he's just so cool.
