Judging from the topic title, though, he's playing the PS2 version, so the walkthrough is not quite correct.

It's been a long time since I played the PS2 version myself, so I can't remember. I do have the Wii version at hand but I remember the PS2 version was very different in this segment. You can check this PS2 walkthrough, though.

Talking The Kraken

You want to defeat the kraken ?
Then you will need to climb up to the sun platform (spiked platform)
Then you trigger the switch, then use grapple to go in the hole then trigger the switch in the hole, then Press L3 (click down left analog stick) then aim the chain weakenss then shoot !!!
The sun platform fall down and crash into the kraken.

Even in the PS2 version you still need to release the sun platform before it can be dropped, the side chambers on either side of the Kraken chamber need to be explored. Although it has been a while since I played the PS2 version I believe the main difference is the doors from the side chambers leading into the main room are blocked, you have to use the corridors to get to the side rooms. The Tomb Raider Chronicles site has a PS2 walkthrough.
