Subdued?! If Robin was any more intense my monitor would literally be on fire, I think that's the amazing part it reflects the stark contrast between Batman & Robin. Batman's colors are perfect & I think Quietly's gritty style resembles TDKR art more than Lee's cleaner art.

I would have to agree, as much as I like Lee's art, Quietly's fits much, much better in the TDKR universe.

Look how dark the green portions of his costume are. His cape seems a little darkened and desaturated as well. The skin tones have heavy shading and are more brown than red.

Its not exactly tricky to highlight the contrast between the colours of Robin and the dark tones of Batman either. Sticking Robin in front of Batman in almost any situation is going to make that contrast very obvious.

I think Lee's art resembles TDKR's better than Quitelys. I think Lee exaggerates the characters more with Batman being absolutely massive and Robin being this tiny little ball of colours. Quitely's art is more realistic while Lee's is a big bombastic cartoon show much like Frank's. I suppose Quitely's resembles Miller's in the way they both have minimal inked surface detail compared to Lee's but thats about it IMO.

I think the Miller variant covers are the coolest. The one with Batman running on rootops? Classic.

Looking at the cover, there's a reason for the muted colors. The sky is at dusk, with the last rays of the sun's "magic hour" passing off the horizon. That orange and red light will change the natural look of the green and yellow on Robin's suit, not to mention the skin tone.

If you're talking about the Miller Variants for All Star, I'll have to disagree on that one. IMO his variant covers look kind of like there were once comic panels but were blown up to make a cover. DOn't get me wrong, I like Miller's art in stuff like TDKR and Daredevil, but these covers look like they weren't made for covers. The edges on the people seem to be jagged and things like that, and it just bothers me.

Wow. I just started reading the reprints of old Batman comics from the late 30's and early 40's (Batman Chronicles). Man, they used to be fantastical and pretty dark. And Batman KILLED criminals. Interesting.

Didn't he carry around a gun too, at first? That's just the 40's for ya.

Yeah when Batman started out he was basically a pulp hero.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he did but after he was portrayed as shooting and killing something or someone, a DC president decided Batman should have the code of not killing criminals. This stuff is still really good though, IMO.

Despit the quality of the early stuff I'm glad they decided that he shouldn't kill. Needless to say it would be a completely different Batman if they hadn't. IMO the thing that seperates him most from the other heroes is his moral code.

How? Most other mainstream heroes don't kill.

There are some that kill (Punisher, Iron Man, Daredevil, etc.) and it just changes things. Take Daredevil, for instance. The first time he puts on the costume
while Batman never kills Joe Chill and will never kill. It just changes the dynamic and makes them more heroic, IMO.

Those are just a few characters though (and you forgot Wolverine). Marvel's cast tends to kill more than DC's but still the number of major characters on both sides that actually kill are pretty slim.

I like how Miller's Batman was hugely againts killing, but literally okay with hurting the criminals so badly, it would leave permament damage to their bodies, but until he turns 58 he sees how dark the world has come, and becomes okay with seeing that sometimes, killing is a necessary evil.

Keep it on topic, please. I only mentioned the reprints because like All Star Batman, the character was very different than the so-called mainstream. Thanks
