Default saving game

I manually saved my game died and tried to load it, but it takes me back to a auto save spot every time, so I cant progress.

Yeah, you can. It doesn't save your position when you save the game, just the stats (e.g. total kills, missions completed, ect.). When you reload the save, it automatically puts you at the closest stronghold.

As stated already here, your progress IS saved, it's just that you don't reappear in the same location as you died. Just call the black market chopper and select extraction to take you to where you were if you want to continue from where you left off.
