Default Who uses an Xbox 360 controller?

Who here uses the Xbox 360 controller on the PC version of this game? I do. In games like this, Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row, I much prefer using a controller over the keyboard and mouse. But in any other type of game I use the keyboard and mouse. I can't stand playing an FPS with a controller.

I prefer to use a mouse and keyboard for first person games.
But 3rd person, I prefer the controller.
Unless it is a fighting game. I have an arcade stick for that.

I do, Wireless Xbox 360 pad precisely. But I continuously switch between the pad and the M+K depending on the situation : M+K while on foot, stunt mode, freefalling or gliding, pad while driving any vehicle.

I remap the buttons on my 360 controller so that I can hold the controller in my left hand and my mouse in the other. That way I get analogue walking/running/steering, plus analogue acceleration and still get the aiming and camera control of the mouse.

It does take about five minutes to customise the buttons whenever I install a new game, but other than that I have no idea why more people don't play this way. It's the best of both world.

Same here (well, I have the wired controller, but the rest is the same). I sometimes use M+K for helicopters in JC2 as I find it easier to aim that way.

I'm really tempted to try Morlock's method at some point; recently talked to a guy who plays BFBC2 that way (controller for movement, mouse for aiming) and I find this intriguing.

I was about to write exactly the same. The 360pad is really great for driving games and third person platform games. I will never go back to non-analog controls !

And FPS with a pad... Well... It's like ketchup on a banana.

Hi, -Morlock-, I also like to use the controller and the mouse together.

But the problem is that everytime I use the Xbox 360 controller, the mouse movement becomes very slow.
It did not help to change the speed settings of mouse or controller.
Could you please tell me how did you solved this problem?

Thanks!

I had the same problem; the in-game mouse settings don't affect the sensitivity of the mouse movement whilst the game is receiving controller input...

What I did was use my mouse driver software (Logitech Setpoint) and upped the "pointer speed" to maximum. Then I went back into the game and kept lowering the in-game mouse sensitivity until the "using only mouse" speed matched the "using mouse + controller" speed. It's a bit fiddly I know, but it works.

Glad to see that other people use the "controller + mouse" method - I can't wait until somebody starts selling a good one-handed controller.

Thanks for the hint, -Morlock-!

It's a great idea, but unfortunately in my case (Microsoft wireless mouse) the "pointer speed" of the mouse driver software (IntelliPoint) strangely don't make any difference in the game. When using the controller, the mouse speed is only affected by the Xbox controller "Aim sensitivity" setting in the game options menu.

But thanks for the help! I'll continue trying to play with the controller and the mouse!

How exactly are your controls mapped? I was just wanting to try this out for myself, and I'm too lazy to figure it out for myself.

Oh yeah I'm just remembering how fiddly this all was... no wonder more people don't use a controller with a mouse.

Normally you would just go into your gamepad driver software and set the buttons how you like them, but because of Microsoft's policy of "Do it our way or fook off" you have to use two other bits of software:

1) x360 Replacement Driver: Put these -Two Files- in your JC2 folder and it will disable all the buttons, leave the analog sticks as normal and swap over the triggers (shoot/accelerate with left trigger). For the full driver -XInput-

2) Remap the buttons: Assign keyboard presses to the now blank buttons with -XPadder- or even better (although not free) is -Profiler-

I think I have remembered everything. Good luck.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. And now I'm glad I didn't try to do it myself because I had no idea you had to use other programs.

EDIT: I've had no trouble setting up the programs for this or anything, but I can't figure out exactly how to get all the functions mapped to the buttons. It seems like I keep running out of buttons before running out of functions. Could you please give your control scheme?

I know what you mean, JC2 has so many controls and you need most of them WHILST running.

>The 'Profiler' software has a nice feature where you can set one button to do different things depending on whether you tap, hold or double tap it.
>With both XPadder and Profiler you can also set a controller button to be a 'Shift' that whilst held lets all the buttons be assigned to something different (I'm not using that feature).
>Also I have wired in an extra physical button on my controller behind the grip where your middle finger rests - the controller thinks it is the Right Stick Button.

MOUSE
Left mouse button = Grapplehook
Right mouse button = Jump/Parachute
Mouse shoulder button 1 = ThrowExplosives/VehicleFire2
Mouse shoulder button 2 = Melee/VehicleFire2
Mouse top button = Use/EnterVehicle
Mousewheel left = "Enter" key
Mousewheel right = StuntJump
Mousewheel up/down = WeaponSelect
Mouse thumbwheel = VolumeControl

X360
Left analog stick = Movement
Left analog trigger = Fire1/Accelerate
Left shoulder button (tap) = Evade
Left shoulder button (hold) = Sprint/ScopeZoomIn/Handbrake
Left stick button (tap) = Manual Aim
Left stick button (hold) = Duck/Drop/ScopeZoomOut
'Grip' button = ReloadWeapon/BrakeReverse
DPad = 1,2,3,4
Back (tap) = Menu
Back (hold) = PDA
Start = ExplosiveType

Phew! That's a lot of controls.

--EDIT--
Oh and I've got A,B,X,Y setup as music controls for WinAmp (this game is missing custome music).

Thanks. Btw, I now know my problem. I only have a 2 directional mouse wheel with 2 buttons on the side. Also I wasn't using buttons for multiple actions like you.

I too use a 360 controller, but I use it along with mouse and keyboard. When I'm on foot I prefer mouse and keyboard (mouse for changing camera is really nice), but switch to the controller for vehicles.

I've had the "mouse slow-down" problem only once, but I've logged almost 25 hours so far so once isn't too bad!

I'm curious about this. I think I'm gonna try using my PS3 controller with it (which I know how to do). I'm wondering if using joysticks instead of a keyboard will make the driving input lag less noticeable. I'm guessing it might be because I don't get that great fps and Eidos didn't accommodate their controls for people who get low framerate, but I could be wrong and maybe it's another issue.

UPDATE: OMG SOOOOOO much better! Now I'm thinking it's not a framerate issue and just that they didn't do to convert the driving controls to work better with the keyboard. I just need to adjust some sensitivity settings and maybe some buttons around and it will be perfect!

I just use mouse/keyboard AND xb360 controller to play this game to the best comfort.
I use m/k for everything (parachute, walking, evade, aim and shoot) and the 360 for driving all vehicles and flying planes...although I prefer the m/k for flying helicopters.
Suits for me very well, but indeed why do we have to play like this if the developers could make it more easy for us?

I use mouse/keyboard for everything in the game except for planes. Flying controls suck with m/kbd, I keep my 360 controller plugged in and handy when playing.
