Being of a certain age, computers were merely an after-school hobby in my day but my brother did have a Spectrum ZX in about 1982
![]() It wasn't until I was in Germany again between 1996 and 2000 when a neighbour was having a spring clean and palmed me off with her antiquated desk top. It didn't have Windows or anything so it was little more than a glorified typewriter. But I bought it off her anyway. Then an army friend in a lower flat put Windows on and made some basic upgrades so we could play a few DOS-based games on it. There was no Internet connection either but it was still a novelty back then. Forward about two years and I played a shareware disc game called Nitemare 3D. Ten free levels and I was hooked on gaming so picked up Tomb raider II from a supermarket one day but it wouldn't run on my decrepit old machine so I did the only sensible thing and bought a new Dell for around £850 - just so I could play TR ![]() That Dell is still going strong only it is now being stored to make room for my new Dell Inspiron which runs on 64bit. It was quite pricey as I customised it to enhance a few features but thanks to Windows per se and the excellent help facilities, I was able to gradually teach myself the basics back in the 90's. Plus the Internet and certain forums are a great source of help for when one gets stuck on something. How about you guys? What was your first computer and did you learn the basics at school or largely by trail and error?

I feel your pain.
Funny but at home, my Mum and brother can't get Broadband so if he wants anything major downloading he comes and uses my computer. He did one recently and it took about 7 hours to fully download so I left the PC on overnight and he just transferred it to his external. And I have a fast machine and good download speed. I was on dial-up for years and if I go online at Mum's (which is rare), it takes so long to upload a page, much less a picture or an e-mail containing pix galore

![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Macintosh_6500 My first computer was a lemon, everything that could go wrong with it did. But it was a good learning experience fixing it all the time. It seems like a LONG 13 years ago. I went from thinking computers were fairly useless to me except for processing images to practically spending my life in front of them. After teaching myself how to use them (and Photoshop) I now make my living with them. I have no idea if the younger generations can imaging a time without them and the internet. I have trouble imagining it now and I was there! :P
